Chapter 99: How to control your wild nightlife (4)
Something about Charlotte, who had just returned from maternity leave, seemed to catch my eye as she glanced back and forth between me and Alex, and finally, unable to contain herself, the question about my relationship with Alex came out of her mouth.
“…Did you two have a fight?”
It wasn’t until I heard her words that I realized how this situation was being viewed, and it was almost simultaneous that both Alex and I spoke up in rebuttal to her.
“Not at all.”
“Of course not.”
“Then why are you spending today’s shift far apart from each other, instead of sticking together like usual….”
Charlotte’s question, directed alternately at me and Alex, was interrupted by the next figure in line.
“I apologize for being late.”
The door to the office opened unexpectedly and Kael walked in.
I hadn’t expected Kael to show up for work since Sophia had just had a baby, so naturally, I asked my younger brother what was going on.
“Kael…? Don’t you still have another week of paternity leave?”
“That’s true, but I just want to finish the work I have to do quickly and then go back.”
They say they look alike, and I wonder if Sofia’s workaholic personality has rubbed off on Kael.
Even if it did, I couldn’t believe he’d come out on vacation to check on things.
It was definitely a sign of a responsible little brother.
“He can’t help it, he’s the kind of guy who doesn’t feel secure unless he’s in charge. I’ve got the taxes pretty much organized, so you’ll just go over them and get back as soon as you can.”
“Thank you for your consideration, Mr. Alex.”
Taking the stack of organized papers from Alex, Kael sat down and began to review the papers given to him.
-Palak. Palak. Palak.
The sound of flipping through papers was added to the already quiet office.
…Well, that seems to have put to rest any questions Charlotte had about us for the moment.
“…….”
“…….”
“…….”
“…….”
“…….”
“…….”
“…….”
“……?”
Sensing something was amiss, Kael began to glance back and forth between me and Alex, just as Charlotte had done earlier, and I deliberately ignored his gaze this time, turning my attention back to the papers on my desk.
That didn’t stop Kael, who quickly picked up on the strange atmosphere, from speaking up.
“Hey, sis, did you and Alex get into a fight?”
This time, my and Alex’s answers came almost simultaneously.
“Not really.”
“Not really.”
“Then why are you two working so far apart, not even talking to each other. Usually you’re pretty much a fork and knife, always attached….”
And then Kael’s question to us was interrupted by another newcomer.
“Charlotte, are you there?”
Because suddenly the door to the Office opens, and this time it’s Prince Eamon.
No, no, no, Prince Aemon would be a bit of a stretch now.
After all, the Prince Eamon who entered the Francis Family no longer bore the surname Leavrov.
“Eamon!”
“Charlotte, I’ve missed you.”
As soon as their eyes meet, they embrace, not caring what anyone else thinks, and it’s like a couple of idiots.
Do they really have to show others that they are dying and unable to live like that?
“Mr. Eamon, I thought you were supposed to return from your overseas business trip tomorrow.”
“…Charlotte was waiting for me, so I grinded as fast as I could. Rest assured, Your Highness, I have not returned in a hurry.”
“…Your Majesty, we don’t even have a date set for Alex’s inauguration yet.”
“It’s not like my mother has any children besides me and my brother, and besides, I’ve already announced that I’m stepping down from the throne, so it’s pretty much set in stone.”
“…Well, I suppose it should be.”
The words “it’s not set in stone” almost came out of my mouth for a moment, but thankfully the contents of my stepfather’s letter didn’t.
That if Alex and I had a child in the next two years, the throne might skip him and go to Cayenne.
There was no way I could bring up such an embarrassing subject.
“Eamon, if you’re here, I’d like you to write a reply to that letter from the Alliance.”
“It’s time to eat, brother. It’s been a while since we’ve all been together like this.”
“…From the sounds of it, yes.”
Charlotte’s birth had been followed by Sophia’s, so the office had been without either Charlotte or Kael for some time.
Add to that the fact that Eamon usually traveled for work on a regular basis, maybe once every month or two, and it had been a while since the five of us had been together.
“I’ll tell the chef to prepare a meal. Ari…is Ana okay with that?”
“I’m sure she’ll be fine, Alec…ss.”
As soon as Alex and I’s eyes met as we sat across from each other in the office, we hurriedly averted our gazes, not knowing who to say first.
Seeing us like that, Eamon turned to me and Alex in a nonchalant tone and asked.
“What’s up, bro. Did you fight with Ariana?”
“No, we didn’t fight.”
“We didn’t fight.”
“Then why are you two avoiding eye contact like that?”
“…….”
“…….”
Eamon’s question was so obvious that Alex and I fell silent, unable to articulate what was bothering us.
“It’s just, there was a little something that happened.”
“…It’s not really something you should be concerned about, Eamon.”
“I’m just confused when you react like that and tell me not to worry about it.”
Charlotte, who had been watching the conversation between me, Alex, and Prince Eamon, cautiously interjected.
“…Why don’t we, uh, talk about it over a meal or something?”
⁎ ⁎ ⁎ ⁎
It had been quite a while since the entire student council had gathered for a meal.
Perhaps because it was a gathering of people who currently hold positions in the kingdom of Leavrov, I could feel the power of the chefs in every single dish on the menu, even though it was planned on short notice.
In particular, the alio olio pasta with garlic was obviously made with me in mind, so I felt obligated to taste it fully in order not to turn down the favor.
In the past, the overpowering garlic flavor of this dish would have prevented me from eating it often, but now that I have a mouthwash made by Miss Sophia, or rather, her lab, I’m fine.
So even if I do eat something rather strong at lunch, it won’t stop me from making out with Alex afterward.
…No, what the hell am I thinking right now.
I just realized that just yesterday I said I was only going to go as far as kissing, and then I went all the way again.
So now I’m actually banned from kissing, which isn’t really that important, unless you count eating stinky food.
Although I’m pretty sure Alex would tell me that even that’s adorable, whether my breath smells like garlic or not.
Anyway, today was the day I promised Alex I’d practice not kissing him, so I didn’t hesitate too long before taking a small portion of the alio olio pasta on the table.
“So, what the hell are you guys doing sitting so far apart again?”
“…….”
“…….”
Charlotte asked, incredulous at the distance between me and Alex that extended all the way across the table.
“A few days ago, it seemed like you two were as good as dead to each other. Is it possible that ten years of love has burned so brightly that it’s slowly cooling off?”
“Of course not. I’m still so in love with Ariana that I’d give my life for her.”
“It’s not like I have anything against Alex, in fact, I’m barely suppressing the urge to cling to him right now.”
“Then why the hell….”
Alex and I fell silent, unable to answer Charlotte’s question easily, “Why on earth have we been so distant from each other all day?”
…because both me and Alex knew that it was an embarrassing topic to bring up in front of others.
“Are you sure this is something you shouldn’t tell me or even Charlotte?”
“I wouldn’t pry if you wanted to keep it a secret, hmm….”
My fiancé…no, husband, hesitantly opened his mouth in response to the barrage of questions directed at us from multiple directions.
“I wasn’t going to tell anyone else, but people here are tight-lipped, so I’ll tell you.”
“Good idea.”
“But only with Ariana’s permission, since it’s her private life.”
As soon as Alex’s words were out of my mouth, I noticed that this time, all eyes were on me.
Out of respect for me, they didn’t open their mouths, but I could tell from the looks in their eyes that they were demanding some sort of answer from me.
“…Okay, this is going to be a little embarrassing, but I have to tell you guys.”
“Yes, if Ariana will allow it.”
“Actually….”
Every time I make love to Alex, I worry that the baby will come in at any time.
After the words came out of my mouth, I could feel the different emotions in the three sets of eyes directed at me.
“…….”
It goes without saying that Charlotte’s gaze was the coldest of them all.
