Chapter 50 - II
Song Ning remained puzzled and decided to ask Zhou Yan about their plans when they went to bed that night.
Zhou Yan shared his suspicion with him, “If they did indeed commit these actions, we can’t let them get away with it.”
Song Ning voiced his concerns, “But if it’s exposed, who should we turn the evidence over to?”
Zhou Yan replied with a grin, “Who else but Xie Yu? Baiyin City is under his jurisdiction.”
.
Pei Xing was also concerned about the potential threat Liu Yingying posed to Shi Yi in the future. Constantly being on guard against others was not a long-term solution, and it was affecting his mood.
Since they had this opportunity, Pei Xing decided to address the issue directly and eliminate the hidden dangers.
Zhou Yan didn’t approach the entire village; he only questioned a few people who usually associated with Zhu Laosan. He obtained information from a man named Qian Hu.
“Master Zhou, this is all I know about Zhu Laosan.” Qian Hu confessed while kneeling on the ground.
Zhou Yan inquired, “Did you witness the arson?”
“Ouch, no, I just guessed it,” Qian Hu grimaced in pain, regretting that he had let slip what he knew. He recalled a time when he had lost all his money in a gambling house after an entire night of play. Upon returning, he had intended to talk with Zhu Laosan about his losses.
When he inquired at Zhu Laosan’s family, he was told that Zhu Laosan had gone up the mountain. Qian Hu assumed that Zhu Laosan had come across something valuable again and decided to seize the opportunity.
Early the next morning, he took a shortcut through the area, passing by an abandoned thatched house where he heard some commotion. Intrigued, he approached the back of the house to sneak a peek.
The mud walls of the thatched house had developed cracks over time. Through one of these cracks, he witnessed Zhu Laosan involved with a woman inside the house. At first, he believed it was an affair, but then he noticed the woman was bound. He stopped in his tracks and observed the woman’s face closely, finally realizing what was happening.
Subsequently, Zhu Laosan’s family met a tragic fate as they perished in a fire, and Liu Yingying took a son-in-law quickly. Qian Hu sensed that something was amiss, so he casually chatted with some acquaintances, never expecting the situation to escalate like this.
“Do something for me…” Zhou Yan pressed a knife against Qian Hu’s neck and whispered a few words in his ear.
Qian Hu’s eyes widened, his body trembling, and he instinctively wanted to decline.
Zhou Yan immediately adopted a stern expression and patted Qian Hu’s neck. “If you want to survive, just do as I say.”
Qian Hu swallowed hard and responded with a quiver in his voice.
.
The village’s spice workshop, not far from the village chief’s house, occupied an area nearly equivalent to two households. After Pei Xing handed over the spice recipe, he never intervened with this spice workshop and created another workshop.
It was the soap workshop and Chu Nan was the one who took care of its management, this workshop also helped the villagers to build better life.
One, he entered the spice workshop, Village Chief Liu heartily greeted Pei Xing. “Young Master Pei, hahaha, what brings you here? Why aren’t you at home with your young wife?”
Pei Xing, who hadn’t visited in a while, explained that he had come to pay a visit. He proceeded to examine the premises thoroughly, inspecting the account books in the process.
Initially, Village Chief Liu had considered stopping Pei Xing from scrutinizing the account books, but then he thought it would be unwise to interfere. After all, someone else had provided the recipe, and he still received a small share of the profits. In the end, these were the transparent account books, so he allowed Pei Xing to examine them without any objection.
Pei Xing didn’t utter a word after reviewing the account books. He expressed his gratitude and left directly. As he departed, Village Chief Liu’s heart raced, and he couldn’t shake a sense of foreboding.
However, after several days passed without incident, he started feeling reassured and advised his wife and daughter to remain composed.
It wasn’t until half a month later, before dawn, when a contingent of soldiers suddenly arrived, encircling the village chief’s family, along with other relatives with the surname Liu, who were all associated with the spice workshop.
Xie Yu and Qin Yue, along with their group, came to Pei Xing’s door. Xie Yu directed his subordinates to encircle the area. He then dismounted and impatiently knocked on the door. Qin Yue followed him, shaking his head.
When the door opened, they were met with the sight of a shuanger they didn’t recognize. Xie Yu and Qin Yue were left speechless for a moment. It wasn’t until a familiar and cheerful voice rang out from the courtyard that it snapped them out of their daze.
“Brother, who’s there?” Shi Yi inquired, peering out.
Upon spotting the two visitors, his eyes lit up. “Oh, Brother Xie Yu and Qin Yue, why are you here?”
Shi Yi promptly ushered them inside, had Aunt Hong served them tea, and introduced Xie Yu to Shi Mo. “This is Pei Xing’s younger brother, Xie Yu.”
He then turned to Qin Yue and continued, “And this is Xie Yu’s bodyguard. He’s very diligent, responsible, and highly skilled in martial arts. He’s a kind and upright man who once saved my life. He’s still unmarried.”
Shi Yi went on to nudge Shi Mo in Qin Yue’s direction, suggesting, “Brother Qin, this is my brother. He’s quite tall and very good-looking, you know. I think you two would make a great match. You should consider it.”
Xie Yu nearly choked on his tea, staring at Shi Yi in disbelief.
Qin Yue’s teacup trembled in his hand and broke apart. He gazed at Shi Yi for a long time without saying a word, then finally managed, “I have a wife.”
