Chapter 51 - II
The next day, during the interrogation, a group of people arrived at the county government office, weeping and lodging complaints.
Qian Hu had called some acquaintances, who, after hearing Zhou Yan’s promise, had come to file their grievances.
Qian Hu was anxious, fearing that the county magistrate might throw him into jail. When he entered and saw a young, handsome man of Hu ethnicity sitting at the top, he was momentarily dumbfounded until his companion gave him a pinch, snapping him back to reality.
Then he noticed the county magistrate kneeling on the ground in front of him. He immediately burst into tears as he recounted Zhu Laosan’s story, implicating the village chief’s family and the county magistrate were in a conspiracy to murder people.
Xie Yu promptly had a written testimony drawn up to close the case. The tragedy that befell on Zhu Laosan’s family was entirely of Liu family’s making. The village chief’s family and the county magistrate tried to blame it on someone else and they also colluded with Nanyi people. They were both sentenced to death, and a written confession was swiftly obtained before sending them to Beijing under Qin Yue’s supervision.
.
After a half-month wait, Qin Yue finally returned with an imperial edict.
Xie Yu wasted no time and ordered the execution of the county magistrate and Liu Yingying’s family. The other female family members and those associated with the spice workshop who had the name Liu were sentenced to exile. Innocent individuals, including Liu Dali, were released and allowed to return home.
Originally, Xie Yu had intended to appoint one of the three Juren as the new county magistrate, but none of them proved suitable, so he temporarily appointed Qin Yue as the deputy.
After hearing Xie Yu’s mention of the cinnabar snake, Pei Xing’s face darkened, and he shattered the cup he was holding.
Song Ning and Zhou Yan wore equally grim expressions.
Sensing their unease, Xie Yu inquired about the cause.
Song Ning then recounted Shi Yi’s gathering of red lotus fruits and how Liu Yingying had caused him to fall off the cliff.
“This has happened!!!” Xie Yu exclaimed.
He realized that his earlier pity for Liu Yingying, with the intention of letting her go, had been misplaced. After careful consideration, he recognized that this woman posed a threat to others. In comparison to Zhu Laosan, who had made a deal with her to harm Song Ning and his second sister-in-law but had ultimately harmed himself, he decided it was best to eliminate her to prevent future harm.
“Fortunately, my silly second sister-in-law is unharmed.” Xie Yu sighed with relief, thankful that he had taken action against the malicious woman.
Pei Xing gave him a brief glance and said, “It’s nothing, just go.”
With that, he rudely pushed the person out of the door. Xie Yu was taken aback and rushed back to the courtyard to protest.
“Second brother, I haven’t eaten yet. Why did you kick me out? You haven’t even seen the accounts of Village Chief Liu’s family and Nanyi…” Before he could finish his sentence, Pei Xing slammed the door of his room, drowning out Xie Yu’s complaints.
Xie Yu clenched his teeth, silently resenting his ruthless second brother. He turned to find Song Ning and Zhou Yan giving him curious looks, belatedly realizing that he had spoken his mind.
He raised his hand and slapped himself on the mouth, realizing that he had inadvertently blurted out his true feelings. Despite believing that his second sister-in-law was innocent and perhaps a bit naive, he was undeniably adorable, good-looking, and Xie Yu secretly harbored a fondness for him. Realizing this, he attempted to salvage his image in his second brother’s eyes.
“Second brother, I don’t think our second sister-in-law is stupid. In fact, I find her quite cute and attractive. I like him a lot. Just now…” But before he could finish, a man flew from the house and large date struck Xie Yu’s head with pinpoint accuracy, leaving him momentarily stunned. Then, his clothes were seized, and he was unceremoniously thrown out.
Shi Yi rushed out of the courtyard and stomped on his foot hard.
“Silly brother, go home on your own for dinner today. Your ‘stupid’ second sister-in-law doesn’t know how to cook.”
Song Ning covered his face, unable to bear witnessing the comical scene.
Zhou Yan chuckled and marveled at Prince Liang’s knack for stirring up trouble.
In the end, Xie Yu was invited back to dine at Song Ning’s house, wearing a wounded expression.
.
Pei Xing held Shi Yi in his arms, kissed his head affectionately, and whispered, “Baby, don’t pay any attention to his nonsense.”
Shi Yi, mentally and physically drained from his recent ordeal of learning to read, had fallen into a pit of self-doubt.
In this dynasty, the characters used bore no resemblance to those in their world. The original host had never learned to read as a child and was now tackling it as if it were a foreign language. Not only did he have to recognize the characters, but he also had to compare and contrast them with the Chinese characters in his mind.
It had been over half a year, and he still struggled to read fluently, not even reaching the level of a child like Shi Liu. Now, hearing Xie Yu called him “stupid,” it had severely frayed his nerves.
“I’m just really dumb. I can’t seem to remember or write properly.” Shi Yi dejectedly berated himself.
“We don’t have to continue right now, baby. Let’s take a break,” Pei Xing reassured him, pressing a loving kiss to his forehead, then carrying him into the inner room. He laid Shi Yi down on the bed and leaned in to kiss him.
Shi Yi’s head swam from the intensity of the kiss, and his slender, white fingers gripped the hem of Pei Xing’s clothing tightly. When he was about to run out of breath, his delicate fingers pushed against Pei Xing’s chest, wrists arched back, fingertips white from the effort. Pei Xing didn’t release him until he let out a soft, protesting gasp.
Shi Yi opened his mouth, took a deep breath, and a tear trickled from the corner of his eye, displeased by the accusation. “You, you’re still bullying me!!”
Pei Xing rested his forehead against Shi Yi’s and let out a soft laugh. “Baby, you’ve been under a lot of stress lately. Let’s take it easy.”
