Chapter 61 - I
As they laid in bed at night, Shi Yi suddenly sat up, pondering aloud, “What will happen if my sister-in-law and the others don’t come next year?”
Pei Xing had considered this issue, but based on the condition of the houses on the island, it appeared that people came to visit the graves and stay for a while each year. Assuming nothing went wrong, they should return again next year.
Yet, the situation outside was uncertain, and if a war engulfed Xizhou, they could end up trapped on the island.
“We’ll have to wait and see,” Pei Xing replied. He held Shi Yi and planted a kiss on his cheek. “Tomorrow, let’s explore for farmland elsewhere. The houses in the north seem to have taken a long time to construct, and the provisions inside are taken by us. It’s unlikely that the island’s inhabitants are heading out to sea to procure food every time. There must be other farmland here.”
Shi Yi’s concern for potential food shortages was understandable, and Pei Xing shared his sentiments. “If we can locate farmland, let’s plant a few acres. It would be unwise to wait until we’re unable to leave next year, relying solely on fishing every day.”
Pei Xing’s eyes lit up when he mentioned fishing. “We have the sea here, so we can make our own salt. I think my phone has this information downloaded.” He pressed Shi Yi down and kissed him. “Baby, are you prepared to live here forever?”
“What should we do? We can’t get out without a boat.” Shi Yi said with helpless tone.
“It’s not that impossible.”
Shi Yi’s eyes widened in astonishment. “Do you really know how to build a boat?”
“I know a little bit; I can give it a try.” Pei Xing said with a reassuring smile. “Let’s head up the mountain tomorrow and examine the situation. We should check if there are suitable trees for our preparations.”
With their plan settled, the two went to sleep. In the following days, they harvested the rice in the canyon to the east. It appeared that the fields had been well-maintained and were thriving.
Since it was harvest season, they decided to begin the rice harvest. They spent over a week diligently collecting the rice and spreading it out to dry in their backyard, given the ample area there.
In the mornings, they would return to remove the grains from the rice ears. As the rice grains began to accumulate, they ran out of storage space. Pei Xing used the wood he had brought back from the mountain to craft five large wooden basins, each nearly the size of two of him. He also made three smaller basins with the remaining wood. The large basins were filled with rice ears, reserved for use in the coming winter. The grains would have to be separated at that time.
.
Now in October, it was crucial to figure out how to get through the upcoming winter. Since plowing the land for farming was not a possibility, they needed to start preparations in case they couldn’t leave the island next year, and had to rely on fishing for sustenance.
After gathering the rice, the two of them began hunting in the mountains. Their hunt included pheasants, wild ducks, and wild rabbits. Since they couldn’t consume all the game, they stored it in their yard.
The mountain was larger than they had initially imagined, and it teemed with various animals, perhaps due to the absence of previous hunters. They managed to catch a group of young goats, even though it was still quite hot. They were unable to consume them all at once, so Pei Xing skinned one to fashion animal hides. The hide-making process was successful, so he proceeded to slaughter the other two goats.
Shi Yi realized that Pei Xing was displaying exceptional energy recently. He worked tirelessly during the day and remained active at night. His physical prowess was nothing short of extraordinary.
After consuming the goat meat, Shi Yi made bacon from it. The endeavor required additional wood, so Pei Xing worked hard chopping more firewood.
They possessed a collection of four axes. Shi Yi secretly tried them and his slender arms couldn’t even lift one.
The island experienced significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, necessitating the use of quilts for warmth at night. During the sweltering midday sun, their skin would suffer unless they applied a layer of moisturizer after evening showers.
Since there was no one else on the island, both of them decided to trim their hair for convenience. Pei Xing cut his own hair super short.
Shi Yi gazed at Pei Xing’s short hair and recollected his school days from a past life when Pei Xing had sported such a stylish haircut, which had captivated the attention of some young girls.
Pei Xing ran his fingers through his short hair, and then, with his large hands, he gently pushed Shi Yi onto the bed.
Shi Yi placed his palm on Pei Xing’s strong chest, bit his lip, and whispered, “Why can’t you get enough of me every day?”
Pei Xing chuckled and silenced him with a kiss.
They collected seven sheepskins and sewed them into blankets, preparing for the winter.
After a half-month of struggle, they successfully obtained a fine supply of salt. Shi Yi held two large jars of fine salt, ensuring they wouldn’t run out of it.
Taking advantage of his incredible strength, Pei Xing went hunting in the mountains and specifically targeted animals with thick fur. He even managed to capture three black bears in a single day. Shi Yi finally realized the benefits of Pei Xing’s extraordinary power as he observed the procession of three bears. With an ample supply of fur, they hung a small pile of bacon at home and preserved numerous dried mushrooms.
In his spare time, Shi Yi used a small stone mill crafted by Pei Xing to grind the dried mushrooms into powder, perfect for stir-frying and stewing.
