chapter 2
2 – Encountering the Shabby Magical Girl – Part 2
There are, as the name indicates, several magical girls in ‘The Street with a Magical Girl.’
Under the name of justice, they stand against evil for the peace of the world.
Among them, the most noticeable one was, of course, the protagonist, ‘Iris’. For better or for worse.
Just look at how her mere appearance stuns the people around her.
This was a remark that popped out of someone’s mouth.
“…What is she doing?”
Tens of people had gathered on the shattered concrete floor. Their expressions were all the same. They all wore befuddled expressions.
‘…What are you doing?’
It wasn’t much different for me. It was to be expected. Where in the world would there be such a fool?
“Coward!”
Iris complained as she emerged from the wreckage.
“It’s cheating to attack during a monologue!”
“Groan… idiot.”
“Who are you calling an idiot? Moron!”
It was a childish argument.
Really, are they here to fight?
On one side, a monster launching indiscriminate attacks.
On the other side, a magical girl trying to protect the world.
Both should emanate an atmoshphere difficult to approach as an ordinary person.
“Idiot… wasting… time…”
“You called me an idiot again! You liar, fraud, trash-talker, jellyfish, disgrace of monsters, trash!!”
Why do I keep thinking of kids fighting over snacks in a kindergarten?
After all.
‘He’s always been like that.’
It was a sight I often saw in games. There’s nothing surprising about it now, but it’s a different feeling to see it in person.
Should I say he’s more of a fool? Or should I say it’s chaotic?
…Yes, that’s right.
‘He’s like the protagonist of an old cartoon.’
A passionate fool. Just like the protagonists in old cartoons.
“Keeuk… Enough. There’s no time for play.”
The pinwheel monster.
Its body resembles a normal human being, but it has a colorful pinwheel on its head.
It turns its head towards the people nearby. The pinwheel on its head begins to spin slowly.
The surrounding air begins to gather towards him.
As the situation turned out like this, people who were silently spectating can do nothing but scatter and scream.
But I had no intention of running away.
‘He’ll take care of it.’
It was a kind of faith.
I’ve watched Iris for quite some time.
I know all about her behavioral patterns.
Surely, when civilians are in danger right before her eyes.
“Hey! Don’t touch the guy over there!!”
It was the moment I heard Iris’s sharp cry.
Bang! The sound of a windmill being lifted up filled the air amidst a storm strong enough to shred human skin in a single blow, shooting towards the sky.
It was Iris, who had quickly closed in and delivered an uppercut.
“Oppa! What are you doing so dangerously!”
“Well, because I believed you’re going to save me?”
“Don’t talk nonsense and move away now! Hurry!”
It was a completely different image from before.
There was no trace of her foolish look, but there was quite an impressive sight of a guardian.
When she’s serious, she gets real serious.
That was the gap Iris had.
“As I thought.”
“…Oppa, are you really intending to get killed by that monster?”
“Huh? Yeah. If I die, I die. What can I do?”
“You’re an odd Oppa. Humph, you think I’m going to let that happen?”
The look on Iris’s face changed in earnest.
“Just wait a bit. I’ll finish it quickly!”
.
.
.
.
.
.
The intense battle ended.
“Huff…huff…”
Iris, sweating and gasping for breath.
Beneath her feet lay the mangled body of the windmill monster.
Everyone had held their breath watching this bloody battle.
The great magical girl who bravely faced the monster that stirred the wind and managed to claim the victory.
After a moment of silence,
-Waaa!!
Soon, a cheer erupted.
She might have been proud of the achievement she had accomplished, but Iris, who was injured and embarrassed, waved to them.
Her face turning beet red with embarrassment.
“Good work! Go home quick!”
As people left, she continued to wave.
When everybody had left and I was alone, she stared at me.
“Oppa, aren’t you going home?”
“I’m just starting.”
“Ah…it must be tough.”
“You’ll do as well.”
I turned my gaze.
It was directed towards Iris’s right hand.
Blood was dripping from the torn wound.
“Are you okay?”
“Ah…aha…”
“Seem like you got hurt a lot.”
Iris hid her right hand.
She seemed to have been severely injured.”Give me your hand. I need to treat it.”
“No… it’s okay! Magical girls heal quickly even when we’re injured!”
“Really? But I doubt it…”
Even though magical girls are more resilient and have better regenerative abilities than regular humans, she shouldn’t be fine so easily.
“Oi, let me help you.”
“It’s… it’s okay! I’m a magical girl! I’ll just heal it myself!”
What does it matter if she’s a magical girl?
Before I was able to utter such words, Iris flew off towards the sky.
Not much I can do if she doesn’t want help.
Ain’t my character to force anyone, I’m the sort of person to go with the flow.
I don’t usually insist on something twice either.
If she refused once, I could’ve just said okay.
All of Iris’s actions would’ve been acceptable if they weren’t just an act.
+++++
I entered a convenience store and sat down on a chair.
There won’t be many customers coming in given the ruckus nearby.
Which means, I pretty much have the day free.
‘Sweet…’
I wanted to fully enjoy this moment, but it seemed unlikely.
All because of the unusual girl I had just met.
I reflected on my meeting with Iris.
‘She was pretty cool.’
No doubt, Iris was impressive.
Her beautiful appearance, her determination as a magical girl, her unwavering fighting spirit.
When she blocked the threat to the citizens with her body, I instinctively clenched my fist in respect.
She appeared like a replica of the ideal magical girls in comics.
Cheerful and amiable before a battle.
Serious and cool during one.
‘Is it a Gap Moe thing?’
Now I get it.
Why she’s so popular these days.
But I know too well. Even more so, as I’m a game player myself.
Iris’s true character and personality.
And
‘She’s a good actress. How come nobody noticed it?’
That what she was doing is all an act.
[I’m scared! I am scared too! But… I’ll make it through. I absolutely must play the part of the cool and friendly magical girl.]
Those were lines from Iris in the game.Indeed, he feels fear yet pretends not to.
It must be assumed that he is putting on a brave facade.
Even I don’t know why because this never appeared once in the game.
Could I have found out if I had followed the happy ending route?
‘Why on earth did I have to possess him right before?’
Anyway, this guy was originally quite a scaredy-cat.
That’s because he hides himself with his act.
Clearly, his wounds must’ve been really painful. Yet he could only pretend to be cheerful.
“Huu…”
He replayed the scene in his mind.
That was an act. Every single one of those behaviors was all an act.
Looking through such a pattern, Iris’ appearance from earlier seemed different.
‘I can easily win against someone like you!’
He recalled the shouting Iris’ eyes.
The pupils were trembling.
‘Heh! It’s not hurting at all!’
Iris chuckles while her clothes and flesh being torn apart by the blade wind. He then recalled her legs.
It was gently, subtly trembling.
‘I won! Against this wicked villain!’
He brought to mind Iris’s smile, attempting to look cheerful despite her embarrassment.
Now that he thought about it.
‘Only her mouth was forcibly pulled up in a smile.’
Her eyes, however, seemed about to burst into tears any moment.
“…Sigh.”
The sigh wouldn’t stop coming out.
I should’ve forced her here.
To give her some medicine, or at least some food.
It was troubling.
Not only was he anxious about the destiny of this world, but he also didn’t like the idea of leaving everything to a little girl.
She must be terrified.
‘Let’s see… Given that the main event starts in a year, her age is now…’
…sixteen years old.
A sixteen-year-old is fighting life-threatening battles against monsters that threaten the world.
Using the power of a Magical Girl, with which she’s not yet familiar.
More vicious enemies will appear in the future.
The windmill generating a blade wind would seem like a child’s toy compared to them.
“…What should we do now.”
Just when he started to worry, regret, and trouble himself about the future.
-Clink.
He heard the sound of the convenience store door opening.
Even though there’s a concern, there’s also work.’I should, I have to make money after all.’
I stood from my chair to greet the guest.
The first to greet was the guest.
“Hello…”
It was a petite girl.
Something about her sombre voice seemed familiar.
“Welcome.”
Huh?
Our eyes met; hers a purple hue, and I froze in place.
‘…We meet here?’
What should I say? At this point, it feels like even God is asking for some divine intervention.
Perhaps my homing in on her was for that reason.
So… if there really is a God…
“Why? Is something on my face?”
“No, no, not at all. Welcome, customer.”
I don’t know about God, but there seem to be spirits.
She was a girl with a multitude of bandages on her face, and her right hand was heavily bandaged.
Her extremely pale complexion and hair could easily make you ponder whether the girl was actually a ghost.
I cautiously looked at the girl’s bandages.
She seemed to notice my glance and raised her right hand.
“Is it because of the bandage?”
“Huh? No,no. It’s just-.”
“Aha. I’ve wrapped it just because it’s cool, so, don’t needless worry about it.”
“…”
“Why? Do you feel sorry for me?”
“…I apologize.”
I lowered my head slightly to apologise. Only then did she make a sound of amusement and went to purchase her items.
I mulled over the girl’s words again.
She claimed she had just bandaged her hand because it was cool.
‘If only that was truly the case, how wonderful that would be.’
It would have been easier if her bandage was simply a fashion statement of puberty. But I knew it wasn’t possible.
Underneath her bandages, there rested wounds for sure. I was positive. Those wounds, most likely, were intimately torn apart from sharp wind.
And the figure of her injury was likely similar to the one Magical Girl Iris had suffered.
It was pretty predictable.
Her name flitted through my mind.
‘Nanoha.’
Nanoha right there would transform into Iris.
And Iris, before her transformation, is Nanoha.
“I…”Why do you keep looking at me like that?”
“I’m sorry!”
“Really… I might report you to the police…”
A girl with a strong precautionary sense.
Yes, if I had to make an analogy,
She was like a fierce stray cat.
… Well, it was my fault for constantly looking at a middle school girl.
