chapter 7
7 – 3. Excuse me, I’m becoming a villain -3
“Graaah…!”
A cry of agony escaped from Cheon Se-hei’s mouth.
It was to be expected. She’d been hit over the head with a soju bottle. It must have been extremely painful.
“You’re tough. You’re not knocked out yet?”
“You…bastard…!”
Cheon Se-hei’s eyes flared like axes. The look was one of wanting to kill on the spot.
But her body wouldn’t move. She could only whimper on the floor.
“Stay put.”
“What? You barge into someone else’s house and tell me to stay put?”
“Well- that’s a point.”
He conceded easily.
Then, he had no choice but to make her behave.
“…Whatever. I didn’t intend to use the soju bottle anyway.”
I took out a black rectangular object from my pocket.
“Stay unconscious for a while.”
“You… this son of-“
“Get ready for the police station when you wake up.”
Zap!
A spark flew and I pressed the item against Cheon Se-hei’s body. She stiffened for a moment and then stopped moving.
She’d passed out completely.
‘It’s a good thing I had a taser for self-defense.’
Although it wasn’t used for self-defense this time.
“…Hmm.”
I, who had tied Cheon Se-hei’s hands and feet with a rope, turned my head and looked around the house. The house, which looked like a garbage dump, had three rooms.
The first room was a bedroom.
In the drawer, I found a picture of her with the victims and kept it.
The police will handle that later.
The second room was a storage room.
“Should I take these with me?”
I packed a few things in preparation for an unforeseen situation. It would be best if I didn’t need to use them.Just in case.
There didn’t seem to be much in the warehouse. So this must be the last room.
Slowly, I drew in breath.
“Ugh…”
An unpleasant odor prickled my nose, a stench that reminded me of decay and rot.
Squish squish.
As I opened the door and entered, the sticky sound unique to mucous membranes reached my ears.
‘I’ve found them.’
Slimes, trapped behind an iron grate, mindlessly crawling around. They were extending their tentacles to feed on decomposing fish.
At times, they displayed cannibalism, devouring one another to grow in size.
I was short of breath and swung all the windows and doors wide open.
I felt as though I might suffocate at any moment.
Only after the staggering odor began to dissipate could I go around the room.
‘It’s unpleasant.’
I could become several times stronger just by choosing one of those slimes.
I might possibly be able to defeat the current Iris.
‘But that’s not enough.’
I wanted greater power and wondered whether I could do well with these mindless creatures.
That’s why there was one creature I was looking for.
While moving the supplies in the living room, I felt a gaze directed at me.
I turned my head towards the gaze.
A small box made entirely of glass. Inside it was…
‘An octopus.’
There was one octopus.
Black skin, tentacles, glaring eyes. If you were to turn an octopus into a cute character, it would probably look like this.
Unlike the other grotesque slimes, it was adorable. If the others gave off a wriggling sensation, this one gave off a squirming sensation.
Who would have guessed?
The adorable octopus sitting there.
It was the most monstrous tentacular creature that had been born through cloning the genes of the monster in the old legend.
The creature that would play a major role in the future attack on the magical girl Iris by Chun Se-hee.
+++++
It was said that there used to be a monster much larger than a ship.
Emerging from the sea, it assaulted ships and devoured people. The monster, dreaded by all humans. She succumbed to fear.
Strong power and vast tentacles. That’s probably what Cheon Se-hui thought.
Regarded as the best tool for overpowering the strong. She believed that, once this research succeeded, even the highest heroes would no longer be flowers on the cliff.
And now, the result of this deranged monstrous desire is right before my eyes.
“…Hello.”
Fluent human words popped out of its mouth.
It was a youthful voice, reminiscent of a young girl.
No matter what, it seemed like Cheon Se-hui was indeed a genius. Not only replicating a monster from legends but even teaching it Korean barely fell short.
“Why are you doing such a thing?”
“Because I have a reason.”
“Can you tell me the reason?”
“Of course.”
I stared intently at the creature in the glass box. Understandably, it was hard to tell what it was thinking.
How would I read an octopus’s thoughts?
Considering my previous life’s profession was a counselor, I was confident in conversations with people. It was for this reason that I took the initiative for Noah’s mental care.
But for an octopus, or non-human in general, things are different.
Who among the sane would seriously converse with an octopus?
‘And now I am that insane person.’
Never thought I’d be having a serious conversation with an octopus during my lifetime.
I chuckled bitterly and opened my mouth.
“Can I trust you if you say you need help?”
“Of course.”
A prompt reply. It was slightly surprising.
Would he agree so willingly?
“Aren’t you curious about the reason?”
“I would like to hear it.”
“Starting now?”
“Yes.”
It was a strange creature. Surely, it was no mere clone of a monster. Yet, there was something tender about its speech.
How should I put it? It was like a gentle, upper-class heiress.
I crossed my arms and glared at the octopus. It swung its tentacles around then spat out a voice mixed with a faint hint of laughter.
“I may have been a little naughty. I don’t know who you are but I can sense this much.”
“What can you sense?”
“I am at best a copy. A monster from legends.””It’s a knockoff and not as powerful as the original instinct. Still…”
The octopus paused to draw breath and choose his words.
“I sense something as strangely unique from you.”
It’s a duplicate, yet a duplicate of the legendary beast.
Could innate intuition or abilities be so extraordinary?
I couldn’t know, and there really wasn’t a need to know.
Silence fell for a moment. The one to break it was the octopus’s question.
“Are you really a human of this world?”
“And if I’m not?”
“What?”
“What are you going to do if I’m not?”
The octopus quieted at my assertive attitude. He fiddled with his tentacles before slowly opening his mouth.
“You’re a peculiar person.”
“Yeah, I hear that a lot.”
“Let’s hear it. Why are you so?”
After a moment of contemplation, I decided to tell the truth.
“There’s a girl I want to save.”
“…”
“Pretty soon, she’ll be in great danger. She might… die, or not.”
Dying might even be better.
I couldn’t bring myself to say that and stared at the octopus.
He seemed to be thinking. As soon as he heard ‘I want to save’, ‘a girl’, he rapidly came over.
Now we’re close enough that we could touch each other.
Playing with his tentacles on the glass, he excitably spoke.
“…do you like her?”
“Huh? Ah…maybe something like that.”
Liking someone isn’t just about love, right? I may be alone, but I feel a certain inner closeness, so could you say I like her?
I nodded my head.
As I did, the octopus began to speak excitedly.
“Let’s go right away.”
“What?”
“Let’s go now.”
Why is it doing this?
“You said you liked her.”
“Is that…so?”
“You said you had to save her.”
His voice was like a child with a treat before them.
I couldn’t grasp why it was behaving that way. After thinking for a long while, I guessed looking at the titles of the books nearby.
[Returner and the Blind Saintess]
[The Reconstruction of the Demon World – Lv. 1rown Cup Embroidering the Flower of Love][In waited in the rice paddy]
[The story of being held captive by a dwarf]
They were books that I knew.
They were famous romance novels in this world. They were also the titles of the books that Iris liked.
The most popular books among adolescent girls?
If that’s the case, he might be…
“There.”
“Slime.”
“Slime?”
“That’s my name.”
The sense of naming was
No, that’s not what’s important.
“How old would you be in human years?”
“In human years… about…fourteen? Maybe fifteen.”
I see.
His head nodded.
He might be an adolescent child lost in romance novels.
“It seems you like romance novels.”
“There’s not much to do otherwise.”
“Haven’t you ever wanted to experience it for yourself?”
“… I can’t. There’s only stupid slime here.”
“I see.”
“And my mother… she only thinks about exploiting me…sigh…”
Slime sighed lengthy sigh. It felt like I could see what kind of life it was living.
It was a curse to have intellect. Everyone is a mindless creature, and the only friend, Chon Sehee, only sees it as a tool.
Perhaps those novels were the slime’s sole hobby and escape route.
Slime contemplated for a moment then finally spoke.
“I can’t stand it any longer. Please take me outside.”
“But in return.”
“Yes. I will help. I will help you in rescuing her.”
Scary.
The mind of an adolescent girl lost in romance novels.
Perhaps in his mind, I’m seen as a hero who would do anything for his beloved.
It would be a good omen if the conversation was going so smoothly.
“But how do we get out?”
The door was locked securely. Given the strength of the lock, it was probably reinforced with glass.
But slime reassured me.
“We just need to break out.”
“Why haven’t you escaped until now?”
“I’d be captured right away. And…no matter how much I hate it,””Because she’s your mother. You might not see her for a while.”
The guy briefly showed a bitter voice, then began to knock on the glass.
Crack! Crunch!
The glass began to crack slowly. Around that point, a noise came from the side.
“Just try and get out!”
It was Cheon Se-hee. Cheon Se-hee, who had just woken up from fainting, was crawling and shouting.
“The moment you break that, they’ll all jump out!? Then you guys are doomed, doomed!”
Upon hearing Cheon’s words, the creature turned to look at her.
“Really?”
“…Considering my mother’s nasty temperament…”
“Of course, she would.”
The creature seemed taken aback.
“You! After I’ve taken such good care of you, you plan to betray me!?”
“Well, that’s…”
“Damn…If I knew this would happen, I would’ve just made a fool out of you!”
At Cheon’s words, the creature hesitated.
Didn’t the creature say it himself? Either way, she’s his mother.
But my opinion was different.
“Little creature.”
“Yes?”
“Just break it.”
“…”
How is this a betrayal?
In the first place.
“A parent who treats their child as a tool is no parent at all.”
“…”
“An enemy, she’s an enemy.”
The creature’s gaze turned from Cheon Se-hee to me.
There seemed to be a moment of hesitation, but then he made up his mind.
Whoosh!
The creature swiped its tentacles and shattered the glass box.
The iron-barred door opened, and the slimes began crawling towards us.
The creature hurried up onto my shoulder.
“You’ve got a plan, right? Even I would struggle with that many.”
I smiled satisfied, looking at the reliable materials I brought.
“Of course.”
I always did say, people should always be prepared.
