Chapter 77: Stop in the name of the law!
They both ended up speaking for almost half an hour about their transformations, Rossie fussing about how her transformation had included a few magical circles, lighting effects, and reverb...
While Elizabeth fussed about the fact that the transformation of Rossie was better since it was more modest and more in tune with how she wanted hers to be. But since both didn't know where the effects of Elizabeth's transformation had come...They couldn't do anything about it.
Elizabeth just filled it in her mental note about more things to ask the next time she went to her [Soulscape]...And that might be sooner rather than later if she had half the afternoon for herself.
"Ready [Elemental Weaver] ♥?" Asked her Rossie after they both decided to dig deeper into alternate flourishing nodes.
"After you [Sylphie Starheart]★" Answered Elizabeth while wondering how it would be to walk among normal people dressed as they were right now.
That wouldn't do, since her friend kneeled low to the ground and after breathing in she kicked the ground and rocketed to one of the walls, she went on to use said wall and jump farther into the sky and repeat a few times. In no time her friend was at the top of the building looking down on her "Hurry up [Weaver] ♥!" Calling for her.
She wasn't sure what she thought before, but it kinda of made sense? After all...You didn't see [Magical Girls] or [Heroes] walking among the populace... First of all, it was dangerous...For the normal humans that is.
A non-powered / non-magical human was...Squishy.
And second of all...Yeah...It made sense that they would travel by rooftops if not flying, most [Magical Girls] could fly, either by using their wands or by their own power...Actually, were those wands [Artifacts]?
Maybe Rossie hadn't gotten one to fly? Perhaps they could get one in the internship...
But she was digressing too much again "Coming ★..." Said first to her friend while thinking about her choice...She had plenty of stats more than her friend in the [Physical] aspect. So she was [Sure] that she could do the same...Maybe even jumping in one go to the rooftop wasn't out of the question.
But...She didn't want to make a habit of using her full skill set in her magical persona, most of those things would be more in tune with [Shadow Empress]. So she needed to go at this like a [Magical Girl]...So more magical than physical was the way to go.
So she raised her [Wand]...Wait, where did this thing come from?
She felt the thing resonate with her mana, so it seemed to help her cast and focus magic better...Did Alexa add it to her [Shift]? Either way, she wouldn't mind the gift... So she raised her wand and started casting away.
She wove the spells she would need first "[Wind]+[Wind]+[Mold]= [Wind Apendix]" She made a blob of wind mana with pseudo physical form and made it orbitate around her body while focusing on the next step. "[Body Of Mana] + [Partial]+[Transform] = [Pseudo Transformation into mana]" She cast that spell into a small part of her shoulder blade.
She went ahead and fused that to the blob of wind mana and moved to the next step. "[Mold]+[Transform] + [Wind] = [Sephyr Wings]" She ended this step by molding the blob of mana into actual green translucid wings.
They looked more like the wings of a fairy than actual wings, but she didn't need them for much, they mainly were decoration after all. The wings could generate and manipulate wind, but if she was calculating things right, they didn't have enough Oomp to actually help her fly.
So after doing a couple of flaps and confirming that they indeed could only help her lift a few cm of the floor, she went ahead to test the next step of her plan "[Magic Circle] + [Afix] + [Amp] = [Enchant Spell]" and then she focused the new magical circle into the sole of her boots.
And cast the next series of spells "[Jet]+[Wind]+[Amp]", she didn't need them to do anything complex so she only cast the spells and let them stay there. These would work as boosters to help her stay in the air.
She went ahead and put a few here and there, some extras in her shoulder blades, and a few on her hands. She would need to feed them mana to activate them since she didn't though to put the [Trigger] spell in it. She would after this though.
"Up we go ★~," Said the blonde while giving a small jump and letting the wind help her soar, the boosters in her boots giving the strength to get her in the air and the wings on her back helping her stabilize herself.
"....show off." Was all her friend could say while sulking on her rooftop.
Elizabeth couldn't help but giggle at that, she even went as far as flying a couple of times around her friend who only continued grumbling while jumping from rooftop to rooftop.
She wondered if it was common for [Healers] to have such high mobility...Or if her friend was casting [Buffs] in herself. But she hadn't enough time to wonder about that since both girls got locked in the air by a sudden pressure.
Rossie stood in the middle of preparing to do a jump to the next building across a street while Elizabeth stood fixed in space as if someone had cast a web around them.
"HALT IN THE NAME OF JUSTICE!" Came the high-pitched voice of a woman from above them, there stood a blue-haired woman dressed in what could be only described as a cosplayed magical girl pretending to be a police officer.
"Magical Girl - [Lawbringer Sentinel] reporting..."She started saying while talking into her police officer bag as if it was a radio "I got a couple of unidentified [Magical Users]...I will check the verifications over." And then she flew closer to them.
Her coat was billowing as if the wind was moving it, but from where Elizabeth was seeing it, it was moving in the wrong direction, perhaps she was flying using that as an artifact?
Either way, she first pointed one of her hands towards Rossie and her nail shined blue "Identify yourself, state your business, and why you aren't keyed to this area of activities. Failure to comply will mean hostile intentions." And spoke as such the magical girl.
Rossie for her part seemed more calm and stated "Magical Girl - [Sylphie Starheart]. On my way to my assigned clinic, I haven't registered my [Foci] with the network since we just got assigned and thought to do so after checking in." She finished saying while stretching herself. It seemed that the other magical girl had released whatever restraining spell she had against her friend.
Then she turned to her and did the same weird thing with her nail and said "You too blonde, state your piece." And she felt the restraining fade away, she almost lost control of her flying but managed to recover her balance.
So while glaring at the blue-haired magical girl Elizabeth answered "Magical Girl - [Elemental Weaver], assigned as sidekick to Sylphie here, was going to go with her and then look around and see if something was interesting going on. I thought we had registered already at the City Hall though..." ended saying the blonde girl while hovering near Rossie. She didn't have good experiences with the people in power, so she wanted to be near her friend in case things went south.
And it didn't seem to be the case in this situation as the blue-haired girl slowly landed in front of Rossie "Would you accept a verification [Scan] of your [Foci]?" And said as such while grabbing her badge and putting it forward. "It will work as a register for this area so we know you are intending to work around here." And then just stood there waiting.
"Is it necessary?" Asked Elizabeth while warily looking at the badge. She really didn't want to.
"...No." Said the blue-haired girl. "It will however prevent law enforcement from coming to check on you for blasting mana around like now."
Oh...She looked at her mana expenditure and indeed she had burned almost 25% of her mana with her several compounded spells, she would need to get a more efficient way to cast these things...
"It's okay Weaver. They taught us about this in class, some high-grade officers can indeed key your [Foci] to the area [Wards]" Said her friend while walking towards the blue-haired girl and putting her pink book in front of it.
She hadn't noticed her friend held a pink book in her belt before, the badge shone for a few seconds and the blue-haired girl seemed as if she had read something..."Okay, logged in. You will be held responsible if your mana is found at a crime scene and aren't around to explain understood?" Said the blue magical girl, to which her friend only nodded.
They both turned towards her, she...wasn't sure what her [Foci] was...
Rossie stood behind the blue-haired girl and mouthed [W-A-N-D] while mimicking grabbing her hand. Her wand was the [Foci]?
She did wonder from where this one had come...She remembered her [Black Magical Girl Outfit] had come with a wand too...But this one had shown up after she did the [Shift] in this city...
She would trust her friend for now and so she landed on the floor turning off most of her boosters (But leaving the wings on) and putting her wand forward, she saw for a second a blue star shine in the crystal at the top of her wand but ignored it, the badge shone again as if it resonated with her wand and after a few seconds, the blue-haired girl nodded.
"Okay, you are keyed to the ward now too [Elemental Weaver]...You got quite a few achievements logged by your teacher...Why are you assigned as [Sidekick]?" Asked the blue-haired girl.
She what?
"I beg you pardon?" Asked Elizabeth doing a doble take at her wand...Was this thing faulty or something?
"Your teacher logged you as proficient with spell casting and modifications on combat. But with low power output, it doesn't state why the low power output. But most of those tend to rely on artifacts or spellcasting to solve that problem." Explained the blue-haired girl. "As such, they tend to be very good at restraining [Rogue Magical Girl]. That is what we recommend to them anyway. So it's a surprise that you are logged as a [Sidekick]."
She...got a commendation for spellcasting?
From Agatha?
The [Witch] that nitpicked at threw glares at her?
What?
"What?" Said the blonde girl while looking at the blue-haired magical girl as if she was reading it wrong...
Perhaps she didn't know how to read?
"Don't look at me like that girl. Your teacher's words, not mine." And she clicked at something in her badge and it projected a holo screen.
There it was written such as she had said.
Registry: |
Name: Elemental Weaver Type: Caster, Elemental Manipulation. Notes: Good cast speed, good mana manipulation, no loss of mana detected.
Suggested Role: Mid - Long Range Support.
Estimated Power Grading: Mid D Class
Estimate Danger Grade: High D Class, Low C Class
Especial Notes: This Magical Girl has genius-grade talent at mana manipulation and has been noted that can cast highly complex spells that should be outside her grade, such as the A Tier Spell [Body Of Mana] while in combat, and casting other auxiliary spells in a compound effect. It is suggested that she is scouted by another spellcaster with knowledge about mana usage since it seems that the mana is the current limit for her.
She has a low amount of mana for the type of complex spells she wants to use. |
She...Didn't see any commendations here. "It only says I can cast higher grade spells here, nothing about achievements." And said so the blonde girl.
To this, the blue-haired girl just started laughing, full-blown laughter at that "Only can cast higher grade spells she says," and continued laughing for a minute or so.
Elizabeth could feel the embarrassment climb on her face since she didn't quite get what was so funny about that, so she looked for Rossie so she could explain that. But her pink-haired friend it seemed that was only nodding at that.
"Let me explain it to you then, why that is so special...You are graded as D-Tier in power levels, correct?" Started speaking the blue-haired girl, and she nodded at that.
She should be around that grade, maybe she would qualify somewhat higher if all her abilities were measured, but for magic alone that should be a fair power level.
"A D-Tier magical girl probably has a few spells she can cast, since she has that amount of [Mana], they usually can't practice too much since their mana is limited, so they focus on what we call D-Tier spells." That seemed fair, if you can't waste mana you obviously would want to cast the same grade of spells to make sure you have a good control over your spells.
"Now...The fireball spell progression is...This." Continued her impromptu class the blue-haired girl while showing a holoscreen with different versions of the spell in question.
Fireball Spell Progression List: |
S Tier: Inferno Burst A Tier: Pyroblast Torrent B Tier: Flare Torrent C Tier: Ember Volley D Tier: Ember Blast E Tier: Ember Spray F Tier: Spark Spray |
"Names change here and there, some won't even use the name and just say [Fire Ball] or something, but these are the standardized names for the [Police]. They can give you the [Design] as a reward if you want it by the way." Winked the blue-haired woman at her.
Rossie glared at her for a second and she understood that sentiment, she was in teacher mode, winking and playing around wasn't a good way to teach or get her point across.
"The main difference in the F-Tier, the D-Tier, and the A-Tier is...Complexity." At this point, she expanded three different images.
It looked like...A mandala fused with formulae and some programming code?
She could see how the mana was supposed to flow and where it was to be stored while the mana attuned itself to..."Oh sorry, forgot to censor it." Said the blue-haired girl while half the image got blurred.
"Hey! I was reading that!" Exclaimed the blonde girl while glaring once more at the blue-haired girl.
She couldn't just show it for a second and pretend it wasn't there anymore!
"As I was saying...The difference is complexity, for reference...The F-Tier is equivalent to 1 A4 page while the D-Tier is 20 pages...And the A-Tier is a book...They spend more mana the higher they go and so you have more points where you can make a mistake..." She ignored the protest of Elizabeth and carried on with her explanation.
And to make her point valid she materialized three different magical circles around her. "This is the cousin of fireball [Water Bolt]...And the variations for F, D, and A tier," she said while pointing at each spell.
"Now I can make the F tier without even looking and it can be done so while half sleep...I use it to get some water from time to time in a harsh afternoon." And to make her point come across she shot it upwards and made it burst to turn it into a comfortable breeze...
Then pointed to the next magic circle "The D tier now...It is more complex and bigger as you can see, it also costs almost four times as much mana as the other...Not very good for getting water to drink or to cool the atmosphere...But very good at making holes in [Villains]." She dismissed this one instead of shooting it.
Then pointed to the last one "Now this one...This one I know how to start the casting..." And she frowned while focusing on the spell, it kept adding new parts to the mandala till it fizzed out and she felt a mana wave hit her.
She endured it while using her own [Mana Manipulation] to disperse the worse parts of the mana wave, to her side Rossie was casting a few spells to defend herself and deal with the side effects of being bathed in mana.
And lastly...The blue-haired girl was drinking a mana potion. "Ugh...I knew the rebound would hit me but still what a nasty feeling...I feel sick..." Was complaining about the failed spell, it seemed the rebound had hit her the hardest.
"Case in point, most of us normal people when we fail the spell end up paying double the cost and suffer from the rebound, and that gets us close to [Mana Drain] so if we don't have a mana potion at hand...We end quite badly..." She said while saving the empty bottle and taking another one to drink from her satchel. "Usually one would be able to somehow cast a spell one tier above them...But the limit ends around a C-Tier casting B-Tier stuff...Since a failure could end up crippling us..."
Oh...
She was seeing how that was a problem "But you...Cast an A-Tier Spell...One of the most dangerous and complex ones...Granted this one isn't a mana hog like the A-Tier [Waterbolt - Tidal Burst]...But the fact that you did in combat...And you dared to use it as auxiliary to other stuff..." finished saying with a very ominous grin on her face.
"Do I need an adult?" Asked the blonde girl while trying to step back only to find the arm of her Rossie on her shoulder stopping her.
"I'm an adult." Answered the blue-haired girl "And I'm offering you freelancer work for the [Policial Magical Girls]. We don't do schedules or boring stuff like that, just ping our [Tinker] using your [Foci] and she will assign you work as needed."
The blue-haired girl smiled at her while she toucher her wand using the point of her badge, the badge shinned once and then her wand shinned once back.
She was wondering what was going on till a blue screen showed up in front of her face with a *Ding*
Notice: |
Onyx Saintsworth's Royalty Bracelet has been linked with the local network. Please refer to the manual stored in the [Soulscape]'s Library for further information in the link to the local Saintsworth's Network. |
"...I will take that into consideration..." Said the blonde while looking at the blue screen and then at her wand...
The wand was...her obsidian bracelet...So the stupid [Foci] and what they used to identify [Magical Girls] to verify identities was the bracelet?
So the book Rossie was carrying around was her silver bracelet? And then...The [Badge] the blue-haired girl used was also her bracelet?
What kind of...Devices were the Saintsworth's Conglomerate building?
This was beyond mere [Tinker]-Grade things...It was closer to Magi-Tech...
And...Since when a [Magical Girl] could be a [Tinker]? Or were they fusing the technology?
She would scour that manual for an answer that was for sure. "I will stay here and see what I can find in the [Network] I got added on Sylphie." Started saying the blonde girl while looking at her friend. "I know we promised to scout your new area, but this could help me get the extra achievement points I need while you are working at the clinic, and it will allow me to be near you in case of emergency." She finished saying.
"It's okay Weaver, you will need to invite me to dinner to compensate though ♥" Said her girl friend with a mischievous smile while she jumped to the next rooftop without waiting for her answer.
At least she wasn't angry.
"I will be seeing you around [Elemental Weaver]. Just ping the [Network] with your mana, you are already keyed to it. Magical Girl - [Pixel Byte] and she will get you up to order." And on that note, the blue-haired girl also flew away.
Leaving Elizabeth alone on the rooftop, she took to the air and made sure both girls went in different directions, Lawbringer Sentinel seemed to be on patrol duty as she flew following the border of some streets as if she was only checking on some parts. While her Rossie flew in a straight line towards the center of the imaginary circle Lawbringer was drawing.
"So the center of this sector is the clinic Rossie works at?" Wondered aloud Elizabeth.
She decided to fly to one of the buildings near the clinic and sat down in a shade, she would enter her [Soulscape] to spend time, but first "Scan our perimeter and wake me up if someone shows up" said towards her shadow the blonde.
The answer...Came slow "[At...Once...Mist....ress...]" Almost as if she was hearing it from another room. She saw her shadow spit a few scouts...But it was slow and tedious, the scouts once free from her shadow started moving normally again.
But the closer they were to her...The more slow they moved... "...Weird." Said the blonde girl, making sure that it was the case, she ordered one to get close, and sure enough, it started becoming lethargic, she walked away and it turned more active as she was far away, she would need to check on that...
Somehow...It seemed that her [Elemental Weaver] put her farther away from the shadows?
That shouldn't be even possible...Her [Origin] was that of [The Shadow Weaver], she should be (If nothing else) closer to the [Shadows] in her [Magical Girl Persona].
Or was it the [Shift] the problem? She had another one on her list after all...But she didn't register it into either the bracelet or at the town hall...Her bracelet had slots for more [Personas] though...She would check later to experiment with that, but after she dealt with the [Madness].
She didn't want to think what could happen if she used a [Shift] more closely related to [Shadows] while under the siege of [The Madness]. And so, on that note. She sank into her [Soulscape]. She had a manual to search. And this time she would get answers.
