Chapter 5: Chapter 5: The Evolution of Zombies
The heavy rain didn't stop until it had been pouring for three whole days. Even so, the sky remained gloomy and dark after those three days. Layers upon layers of blackish-gray clouds blocked the winter sunlight, and only a few thin patches let in some rays of light to illuminate the whole city.
During these days, those zombies just stood still in the rain, undergoing the baptism of the rain. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Zhang Xiaoqiang kept moving various kinds of food back from the convenience store without a moment's rest, just in case of unexpected needs.
At this moment, Zhang Xiaoqiang came to the window and raised his binoculars to look around. He had already made it a habit. However, apart from the zombies, there was really nothing interesting outside for him to see. It was dull and monotonous.
Through the binoculars, every move of those zombies could be seen clearly.
The heavy rain in these days hadn't washed the streets clean. Broken bones, shattered glass, and discarded beverage bottles were scattered everywhere.
Whenever he thought about the heavy rain in these days, he felt a dull pain in his body. The rain not only carried the virus but also had a strong corrosive effect. The steel bars of the protective railing outside the window had become rusty. If he hadn't been watching it every day, Zhang Xiaoqiang would surely have thought that the protective railing had been corroded by moisture for over ten years. Could it be that the rain was the so-called acid rain?
The clothes corroded by the rain had been torn to shreds by the zombies as they wandered around, and only some scraps of cloth were left, hanging loosely on the zombies.
The zombies on the street were still walking aimlessly as before, but they were a bit more nimble in their steps. The nails on their hands had grown even longer. Some zombies that were originally tall and sturdy had even started to grow taller. They no longer walked clumsily but just like normal people. As for the skin exposed outside, it looked dark and shiny. Many ordinary zombies that got in their way were knocked down to the ground, but it didn't affect them at all.
And some other zombies became even thinner and shorter, but also more agile. Their joints were more flexible, and they could already climb over some low obstacles. The nails on their claws had grown even longer, more than twice as long as those of ordinary zombies.
Zhang Xiaoqiang felt a chill in his heart and muttered to himself while holding the binoculars, "Could they have started evolving?" Well, if the zombies had started evolving, was there still any hope for humans?
He held the binoculars, and slowly tightened his grip with his hands. The blood color on his fingers began to fade, and a bluish tint appeared.
Putting down the 10x binoculars, he felt a bitter taste in his mouth. He lit a cigarette, took a deep puff into his lungs, and slowly exhaled it. Then he leaned against the windowsill, with nothing but a sense of dejection in his mind.
Through the observations in these days, there were about two hundred zombies downstairs of Zhang Xiaoqiang's place. Among them, there were nine evolved and mutated zombies, three of which were the agile type and six were the strength type.
As for the mutation rate of these zombies, it was about five percent. The city Y where he was located had a population of 500,000. Based on this, the number of zombies that had evolved into mutated ones was at least 25,000. China had a population of 1.5 billion, so there would be 75 million mutated zombies. Then with the world's population of 7 billion, how many zombies would there be?!
Zhang Xiaoqiang leaned against the windowsill, staring blankly at the zombies downstairs. There were cigarette butts all over the floor under his feet.
He remembered a blockbuster movie he had watched before. In the movie, the protagonist lost contact with the outside world and lived a peaceful yet monotonous life alone on the vast and boundless prairie. Only a wild wolf with white front legs accompanied him. He was much better off than Zhang Xiaoqiang. He had the whole prairie, while Zhang Xiaoqiang could only be trapped in the house by countless zombies, unable to move even an inch when looking out of the window.
That wild wolf named "Two White Socks" liked to play around him, while Zhang Xiaoqiang only had an unnamed cockroach that would just lie quietly at the bottom of the bottle, pretending to be dead.
Zhang Xiaoqiang picked up the mineral water bottle and held it in front of his eyes. The cockroach was still pretending to be dead at the bottom of the bottle. He shook the bottle, and the cockroach crawled around at the bottom, constantly trying to climb out of the bottle mouth but falling down again and again.
He watched quietly, feeling a bit sad for the cockroach, but more for himself. He wasn't any different from the cockroach in the bottle. They were both bound by their respective fates.
At this time, an agile-type zombie suddenly caught his attention. In the view of the binoculars, this zombie was pouncing on another zombie. And the surrounding zombies, after hearing the commotion, also started to stir and surrounded them.
"Could it be... that there would be infighting among these zombies?" Zhang Xiaoqiang stared fixedly at it through the 10x binoculars, a bit dazed.
That zombie that was surrounded by countless other zombies seemed stronger and more flexible than ordinary agile-type zombies. Although it was only about 1.4 meters tall, much shorter than ordinary zombies, when it hunched over and moved quickly, the other zombies couldn't catch it at all. It was holding something in its two hands and was about to put it into its mouth.
At first, Zhang Xiaoqiang didn't see clearly what it was holding. When it turned to face him, he found that a rat's tail was exposed in its hand.
The rat wasn't big, so the commotion didn't last long. After it was eaten by that zombie, the zombie group calmed down again.
Watching the slightly stronger agile-type zombie downstairs return to the opposite side of the street, where there was a row of old tile-roofed houses and a gutter was connected to the corner of the wall. The rat should have run out from the gutter.
"Could it be that the D virus is only effective on humans?" Zhang Xiaoqiang thought. Seeing that agile-type zombie staying quietly by the gutter, he somewhat understood the root cause of the zombies' evolution.
"Is it that the D virus + flesh and blood + rain = the evolution of zombies?"
