IN ANOTHER WORLD

Chapter 16: 16. Into the Wild

The next morning, as dawn's first light painted the sky in shades of orange and pink, the group prepared to leave the safety of Rachel's home. Sou, Rema, Dr. Ren, and Rachel stood at the edge of the forest, their destination now clear. The journey ahead was uncertain, fraught with danger, but it was the only path that led to the Sun King. They had no choice but to walk it, no matter the cost.

Rachel's figure was stoic, his expression unreadable as he surveyed the dense forest before them. It was clear he knew this terrain well—too well, in fact. Sou could feel the weight of the situation pressing on him. They weren't just entering any forest; this was a place steeped in ancient magic, an environment where danger could manifest in the form of creatures both terrifying and bizarre. But they had no time to waste. They had a mission, and the clock was ticking.

"Stay close," Rachel instructed, his voice low and commanding. "And don't trust anything you see. Not in this forest."

Sou nodded, trying to steady his nerves, but his mind raced. The warnings Rachel had given them before—the ones about not just fighting the Sun King, but facing something much older and more dangerous—clung to him like a shadow. They had been walking for hours, the forest growing darker with every step, the air thick with an unsettling stillness. Only the rustling of leaves and the occasional chirp of a bird pierced the silence.

As they moved deeper into the woods, Rema stayed close to Sou, her eyes scanning the path ahead. Her hand was firm on the hilt of her dagger, her expression focused, but it was clear she was struggling with the mounting tension. Even Dr. Ren, who usually exuded an air of scientific curiosity, seemed more on edge than usual.

Suddenly, there was a shift in the air—a sharp, almost imperceptible change. The birds fell silent, the wind ceased, and the forest seemed to hold its breath. Rachel's posture stiffened, his eyes darting around.

"Get ready," he muttered, and before anyone could respond, the forest exploded into movement.

From the shadows of the trees, a group of creatures emerged—twisted, misshapen beings that seemed more like nightmares than anything from this world. Their forms were humanoid but grotesque, with elongated limbs and eyes that gleamed with unnatural light. They moved with unnatural speed, skittering along the ground like spiders, their bodies shifting in and out of view as if they were made of smoke.

"Keep your distance!" Rachel shouted, pulling a strange device from his belt. He pressed a button, and a shimmering barrier materialized in front of them, a translucent wall of energy that crackled with power.

The creatures paused for a moment, hesitant, before one of them, a larger being with glowing red eyes, hissed and charged at the barrier. The air vibrated with a strange hum as the creature collided with the force field. Sparks flew from the point of impact, but the barrier held firm.

"Wraiths," Rachel muttered under his breath. "Ancient forest guardians. They can't touch us as long as the barrier is up, but they'll keep coming. We need to keep moving."

Rema's eyes widened in terror. "What are they? Why are they attacking us?"

Rachel's lips curled into a grim smile. "They aren't attacking. They're testing us. And they won't stop until they decide if we're worthy of passing through."

As the wraiths circled around them, their forms shifting and rippling, Sou gripped his sword, prepared for whatever came next. The creatures were relentless, clawing at the barrier with their sharp, jagged hands, their shrill screeches filling the air.

Dr. Ren, ever the inventor, began fiddling with a small device in his pocket. "We need to disrupt their energy. I can create a diversion, but I'll need a few moments."

Rachel gave a sharp nod. "We don't have that long. Keep them at bay for as long as you can."

Sou's heart pounded in his chest as the wraiths continued their relentless assault, but Rachel stood at the front, calm and composed. He seemed to be gathering something—an energy, a force, something that radiated from him in waves. The creatures hesitated for a brief moment, sensing the power emanating from him, but they quickly recovered, their hunger for confrontation never waning.

"Rema, keep your guard up," Rachel instructed, his voice colder now. "Sou, move to the right—there's a weak spot in their formation."

Without a second thought, Sou followed Rachel's lead. He sprinted to the right, taking the opportunity to strike at the wraiths nearest him. The first one he encountered was quick, but Sou's blade cut through the air, landing a solid blow. The creature howled in pain, but it didn't fall. Instead, it flickered, its body rippling like water, before it lunged again.

"Focus!" Rachel's voice cut through the chaos. "These creatures are illusions. They aren't real. Strike their essence, not their bodies."

Sou hesitated for a fraction of a second, but the moment he looked at the creature again, something clicked. It wasn't a physical being. It was a manifestation of fear and energy. He focused, channeling every ounce of his concentration into his strike, and when his sword made contact this time, the wraith evaporated into a cloud of mist.

Rema, too, had found her rhythm. Her dagger flashed in the light as she danced around the wraiths, her movements fluid and precise. Despite the terror in her eyes, she was a natural fighter, her resolve strong even in the face of such nightmarish creatures.

Dr. Ren finally activated the device in his hand, and a loud, resonating pulse filled the air. The wraiths shrieked, their forms flickering and destabilizing. They writhed in pain, unable to maintain their illusionary forms. With a final burst of energy, they collapsed into the ground, their forms dissipating into the air like smoke.

Rachel lowered the barrier, his face unreadable. "Well done. But we're not out of danger yet. This is just the beginning."

Sou wiped the sweat from his brow, his heart still racing. He glanced at Rema, who was breathing heavily but appeared unscathed. Dr. Ren was adjusting his glasses, looking pleased with his invention's success.

Rachel was already moving ahead, his pace unwavering. "We've wasted enough time. The Sun King's realm lies ahead, and we need to reach it before he senses us coming."

The group fell into line, their previous fear now replaced with a deep, determined resolve. The forest was no longer just a place of danger—it was a test. A test of their courage, their minds, and their ability to survive the trials ahead. And this was just the first challenge.

As they pressed on, deeper into the heart of the forest, Sou knew that the real trials were still to come.
