Chapter 253: Chapter 252 - 2.0 Upgrades
Both William and Anne read the description. One of them was captivated by its aesthetics, while the other was completely flabbergasted.
William perused the description and nodded in contentment. Although the words weren't as dazzling as The Goddess had portrayed them, he grasped that the skill's power was in a league of its own.
Anne, however, was stunned. She couldn't comprehend how this could be possible. The skill described was evidently far more powerful than William realized. As someone who was not only William's assistant but also exceptionally knowledgeable in these matters, she understood that the skill wasn't just powerful— it was extraordinarily potent.
This wasn't a skill one could acquire merely through luck in a wheel game; it was something that would require even a god to expend considerable power to bestow upon someone.
She knew that William had mentioned the Goddess was the deity governing this world, and using her divine authority, she could have granted him this skill at a much lower cost. However, the question lingered: why? Why would a god endow William with such immense power without demanding anything in return or hinting at future obligations?
Was this goddess truly as benevolent as she appeared, or was there something more deep at play?
One thing Anne couldn't quite wrap her head around was why William, who was typically so wary, wasn't more suspicious of this situation. It could be that he was simply oblivious, or perhaps he was under some subtle influence of the Goddess that clouded his judgment. Whatever the case, Anne resolved to remain vigilant regarding this so-called generous goddess.
"look at this skill! Isn't it incredible?" William asked, his voice brimming with excitement.
'Yes… it really is,' Anne replied, her tone cryptic.
William didn't pick up on her subtle tone and continued, "So, do you think I can use this skill whenever and however I want?"
'That depends,' Anne responded. 'As the description mentioned, you need to strike a deal with someone— an agreement they willingly have to consent. The effect might vary depending on the value or nature of the item involved in the transaction.'
"Well, that sounds much more straightforward than the way the Goddess explained it. She went into too much detail without considering how much I could actually understand."
'Of course, my explanation would be clearer,' Anne replied with a hint of arrogance. 'I specialize in this kind of thing, and I was assigned to assist you in situations like this.'
"Yeah, yeah, sure," William said, brushing off her self-praise. "Alright, let me see what else has changed in my stats." He scrolled down to the skills section.
[Money Generator 2.0 {Innate}]
[System Shop 2.0 {Innate}]
"Hmm… this is new," William remarked as he examined the upgraded skill versions. "It looks interesting."
'It is,' Anne confirmed. 'These upgrades signify that your skills have reached a higher tier.'
"So, do they bring any new features or improvements that could benefit me?" William inquired.
'They do. The Money Generator skill, which supplies you with currency, now provides a significantly larger amount. Previously, you could only generate up to 1,000 gold coins per day, right?'
William nodded.
'Now, you'll receive 100,000 gold coins each day,' Anne revealed.
William quickly did the math in his head and murmured, "So that's 100 billion dollars a day, correct?"
'Yes, that's right,' Anne affirmed. 'And if you manage to upgrade the skill a few more levels, it won't be long before you can generate virtually infinite amounts of money daily.'
"That's great to know. And what about the System Shop— what has been upgraded there?" William asked.
'Do you remember the pop-up notification that appeared before I started speaking to you?' Anne queried.
William recalled the new notification he had seen and brought it up again.
[You have unlocked a new option]
[You have unlocked Customization]
"Is this the one?" William asked.
Anne nodded internally, and William sensed her confirmation. 'Yes, that's the new upgrade you received for the System Shop.'
"And what exactly does this feature do?"
'It allows for customization,' Anne said simply.
"... Care to elaborate?" William prodded.
'Well,' Anne continued, 'it means that every item you purchase from the shop can now be tailored to your specifications. Don't like the shape of a sword? You can alter its appearance. Don't like the weight of an item? You can adjust it. Think an item is too powerful?
You can even nerf it.'
William nodded thoughtfully, considering the implications. "Wait, what was that last part about nerfing?"
'You mean the part about reducing an item's power?' Anne asked, her tone a mix of skepticism and curiosity.
"Yeah, that's the one," William confirmed.
'You don't really want to nerf something, do you?' Anne asked, half doubtful and half intrigued.
"No, that's not what I meant. It's just that the idea of nerfing gave me an interesting idea, and I want to explore it."
'An interesting idea stemming from nerfing?' Anne was intrigued but also puzzled. 'I'm not sure what to expect.'
William's expression turned serious as he replied, 'jokes aside, I really want to know something.'
"If I can change an item's appearance, weight, and other attributes... can I also modify its skill?"
'Do you want the short answer or the long one?' Anne asked, sensing where this was heading.
"Let's start with the short one."
'The short answer is… no,' Anne responded succinctly.
William felt a bit disheartened but pressed on. "Alright, then give me the long version."
'The long version is… kind of,' Anne said, leaving William puzzled.
"Kind of? What do you mean by that?" he asked.
'It's possible, but it depends on several factors,' Anne elaborated.
"Such as?" William's curiosity was piqued.
'For instance, the extent of the modification or the degree of the effect, Anne explained. 'Consider it like this: if an item has a skill that generates a small lightning bolt, but you're trying to change it to summon a meteor shower or create a nuclear explosion, it will fail.'
'But if you're attempting to upgrade that small lightning bolt to a slightly more powerful one, it might be possible. Of course, the power increase can't be too extreme, and you'll have to pay for the enhancement as well.'
"So what you're saying is that I can modify the skill as long as the alteration is within a similar or lesser scope than the original skill?" William clarified.
'Precisely,' Anne confirmed.
William nodded, processing the information. He then got up from his cross-legged position and said, "Alright, let's put this conversation on hold for now. I'm getting hungry and need to check on something else."
'Sure,' Anne replied as William headed to the kitchen and grabbed a sandwich. As he ate, he made his way down to the underground facility in search of Delmar.
As expected, he found Delmar, who was discreetly observing the women of the society through his drone.
"Still ogling those butts, I see," William remarked with a smirk.
Delmar grinned sheepishly and said, "Just gathering intel, boss. Do you need something?"
"I came to check on what you've got for that Edward guy. I hope it's enough to secure me a private audience with him," William said.
At his words, Delmar's expression darkened, and he muttered, "Uh-oh."
