Infinite Paths: The Raging Phoenix

Chapter 569 Fifth floor

The warriors felt a bit depressed when Rain showed up to investigate the closest dungeon, but he told them that he also told his friends to check the other dungeons, so it was fine.

"Don't worry, the enemies prepared this kind of spell for a reason, and naturally, it wouldn't be easy forever to deal with them," Rain said while looking around and tapping on the shoulders of some of the warriors. "Resume your training while I deal with the monsters inside the dungeon."

"Yes, sir!"

The warriors sauteed in unison, and then Rain jumped into the dungeon. As one would expect, the skeletons weren't much of a problem, but soon Rain found frost rats and frost bats on the third floor… they didn't change that much before.

"Density of the mana increased, so their transformation is more evident now," Rain thought while looking around while touching the wall and feeling the cold in it. "This area isn't that cold, but since there are other dungeons of the fire attribute and considering that the monsters that created them were giant ice wolves… nothing makes any sense."

Rain wanted to laugh, but he just kept his guard since he soon reached the fourth floor. He couldn't use ice magic there, and it was his best type of attack lately, even without his guards.

While thinking that perhaps he should hunt some fire dragons, Rain enveloped the skeleton archers on fire and it took a while for them to melt… the cold of the environment decreased the power of his spells and fire magic wasn't his forte anyway.

Rain looked around, his gaze sweeping over the cave's interior. The walls of the dungeon were enveloped in a glistening, thin layer of ice. It was as though nature had intricately carved out the cave, creating an otherworldly, frozen landscape within its rocky embrace.

The ice coating the cave walls had a delicate and ethereal quality, casting a soft, bluish hue throughout the space. It caught the dim light filtering in from the entrance, creating a play of shimmering reflections that danced across the dungeon's interior. The ice seemed to have a life of its own, casting an enchanting and magical ambiance over the cave.

At some point, Rain got tired of seeing the meager power of his fire attacks and just created a giant ice hammer that he could control while it was floating in the air and used them to smash the skeletons. That helped much more.

"It is more experience than before… as expected, the deeper the dungeon becomes, the tougher the monsters become as well," Rain thought. "This could be one of the goals of the dungeons, but it can't be the only one. It is too simple."

It wouldn't be weird for enemies to try and overrun the human country by spawning monsters from the dungeons that had appeared. The use of dungeons as a source of chaos and destruction was a somewhat straightforward tactic that Rain could anticipate. However, Rain had expected more strategic brilliance from the enemies who had been causing him so much trouble.

The lack of complexity in the enemy's approach left Rain both surprised and somewhat disappointed. He had come to respect their cunning and resourcefulness, and he had expected a more ingenious and multifaceted scheme to challenge him.

The simplicity of their tactics might have been a tactical misstep or a misjudgment on their part, but it certainly didn't align with the level of challenge Rain had come to associate with his adversaries.

In any case, Rain soon noticed a cold breeze as he approached the end of the final floor, and the breeze was growing stronger and colder with every passing moment. Before long, Rain found a dark and extremely cold staircase going down to the next floor.

The staircase before Rain was entirely cloaked in a layer of glistening ice. Each step and railing seemed to be encased in a fragile, translucent beauty as if it were a work of art crafted by nature itself.

However, the allure of the ice-covered staircase was countered by its treacherous nature. The surface was utterly slippery, making it nearly impossible to move with any stability or grip. It was as if walking on a skating rink made of crystal-clear ice. Every step taken on the staircase felt like a delicate dance of balance, where the slightest misstep could send someone tumbling.

In such a place, fighting or maintaining one's footing was a considerable challenge. The warriors had to tread carefully, their movements slow and measured, as the risk of slipping and losing control loomed with every step. The staircase's aesthetic beauty masked its inherent danger, requiring a cautious approach to navigate it safely.

Rain, determined to improve his footing on the treacherous, ice-covered staircase, focused his magical abilities on melting the ice beneath his feet. With a concentrated effort, he initiated the process of transforming the solid ice into a more manageable liquid form. As he channeled his fire magic, he observed the ice beginning to melt, creating a small pool of water.

However, before his eyes, he witnessed the water beginning to freeze once more, rapidly solidifying into a new layer of ice. It was as though the dungeon itself was resisting his efforts, countering his attempts to change the environment to his advantage.

"I guess it can't be helped…" Rain thought. "I will float, then."

Even before finding the first few monsters there, Rain began to control the thin layer of dust under his boots and he began to float… he seemed like a vampire, but his arms were crossed instead of being on his back.

Maybe his warriors exaggerated a bit, but Rain didn't feel that cold on that floor… but as soon as he took out the guards, he could tell them that it was below zero there… like below twenty degree Celsius…
