Jing Xingzhi’s Daily Life in Ancient Times

Chapter 20

The Wu family’s residence in Huanshui County was estimated to be a quarter of an hour away by carriage. Two stone lions at the entrance had wide-open eyes and gaping mouths, as if swallowing something.

Arriving not early, the red door was already closed. With a dark expression, Wu Mingrui ignored his book boy, Xiaowen’s half-step and forcefully knocked on the door.

“Dong—Dong—Dong—” the door was smashed by Wu Mingrui.

Xiaowen saw his young master had a bad look on his face, shouted anxiously, “Uncle Dong, come and open the door. The young master is back!”

Uncle Dong, an old and lame servant, quickly opened the door, smiling flatteringly. “Young Master, why are you back, now?”

However, Wu Mingrui, usually good-tempered, gave him a cold glance and said, “I came back when I wanted to. Is this place not my home anymore?”

Venting, Wu Mingrui turned to Jing Xingzhi, inviting him inside, “Xingzhi, this is my home. Come in. I might be busy later, so just spend the night here. Thank you for accommodating my unreasonable request; otherwise, I might have turned back halfway.”

Wu Mingrui paused and added, “I’m in a heavy mood, and what I suspect is uncomfortable. Moreover, my father’s attitude isn’t right. I wonder if he’s protecting someone. I wanted to know the reason for everything, but I’m not brave enough. I’m afraid I won’t be able to bear it. So, I asked for your company, someone who had strong temperament and courage in facing a crisis, to remind myself not to be timid and to learn from my roommate.”

Jing Xingzhi reassured him, “It’s okay; we are friends.”

Glancing at the dusty atmosphere above the Wu family, Jing Xingzhi felt perplexed about the specific situation. Being cuckhold was something and personal matter, but why did the Wu family looked like there was going to be a huge change?

No matter how powerful Jing Xingzhi could only know if he saw it.

As Wu Mingrui led the way inside, his steps slowed, seemingly drained of the courage he had built up. Eventually, he stopped moving forward, his eyes dull, lost in thought.

Xiaowen mentioned, “Young Master, Madam and Master are waiting.”

Madam, likely Wu Mingrui’s mother, was given the title before that of the master, a peculiar observation in Jing Xingzhi’s mind.

Wu Mingrui exhaled, looking at the illuminated yard. He questioned, “Didn’t Mother drive Father out of the main courtyard to live elsewhere? Why is Father still here?”

Chuncui, the maid from the main courtyard, bowed and admitted, “There is a dispute. Madam seemed to be in a bad temper, so she stopped when she heard the young master came back.”

Observing the Wu family’s dynamics, Jing Xingzhi speculated that Wu Mingrui’s mother, Wu Weirui, held considerable authority, while his father seemed to be indulgent or soft-hearted.

Entering the main courtyard, Jing Xingzhi confirmed Wu Weirui’s influence. He now understood why the maid had warned about the Madam’s temper.

As they entered, a cup flew from the hands of an elegantly dressed woman, hitting the head of the man sitting opposite, causing him to bleed. The man, covering his head, screamed and turned towards Wu Mingrui. His expression became less angry upon seeing his son.

Lu Tianming, a handsome man, looked at Wu Mingrui and then at Wu Weirui, expressing, “Madam, don’t go too far!” He held back for his son.

Observing Lu Tianming’s acting skills, Wu Weirui, unable to control her anger, retorted, “How can I get over it if I didn’t hit you?”

Lu Tianming, pointing to his head, complained, “We’ve been married for twenty years, and you treat me like this. Isn’t it a crime?” There was a sense of pride in his eyes, noticed by Wu Weirui.

Proud that, as a mother, she had not disclosed everything to her son Wu Mingrui.

Wu Weirui bore the burden herself. Yet, this man was her son’s father! The thought of choosing such a glamorous figure as her husband enraged her, and she felt an overwhelming hatred. She was so angry that wanted to vomit blood.

In fury, Wu Weirui fiercely grabbed the cup filled with hot tea.

Wu Mingrui stepped forward, calling to her, “Mother!”

Grasping Wu Weirui, he hesitantly said, “Mom, your son knows something…”

Upon hearing these words, Lu Tianming froze, his expression changing, trying to appear natural.

Observing from the side, Jing Xingzhi, standing with the book boy Xiaowen, felt perplexed. The father’s expression was off—it seemed as if he had done something wrong and appeared particularly guilty.

In reality, Lu Tianming felt guilty for something he had done that hurt Wu Mingrui. Upon hearing that Wu Mingrui knew something, he inadvertently revealed his unease.

Wu Weirui was shocked by her son’s revelation. She put down the tea cup, eyes brimming with tears, and anxiously asked, “Mingrui, what do you know?”

Almost three months ago, Wu Weirui noticed something was amiss with Lu Tianming.

She slept lightly and one-night overheard Lu Tianming calling her grandson, nicknamed Yuanbao but also named Wu Gui, as Lu Gui in his sleep.

They had slept together for decades, and while Lu Tianming often murmured their son’s name in his dreams, he never mistakenly called him that. At that time, Wu Weirui believed Lu Tianming simply desired a grandson with his surname, as some men were particular about such matters.

Later, Wu Weirui encountered another strange incident. While having tea at a teahouse, she saw her daughter-in-law’s best friend, but her daughter-in-law claimed to be hanging out with that friend. Suspicious, she asked someone to find her daughter-in-law, and the search not only revealed Li Yu but also Lu Tianming hanging out with her.

What kind of father-in-law shares a room with his daughter-in-law and secretly takes her out?

Enraged, Wu Weirui vomited blood and forcefully brought them back home.

Originally, Wu Weirui aimed to reconcile with Lu Tianming and considered divorcing Li Yu. However, she hesitated to openly discuss it with her son, fearing his disappointment and anger.

Wu Weirui, always caring for her son with a gentle temperament, went mad upon discovering her husband’s involvement with her daughter-in-law.

Moreover, Wu Weirui, once beautiful in her youth, regretted not choosing a good husband and worried that her son, Wu Mingrui, would blame her for the situation.

As Wu Weirui regretted raising her son too well, her temperament drastically changed years ago, especially towards Lu Tianming and Li Yu.

When Wu Mingrui mentioned knowing something, Wu Weirui couldn’t contain her emotions and burst into tears.

Seeing his usually strong mother cry, Wu Mingrui felt a deep pain. He asked hesitantly, “Mother, is Yuanbao my son?”

Unable to bear it, Wu Weirui closed her eyes and then, with determination, said, “Yuanbao… Yuanbao shouldn’t be your child. Li Yu takes medicine behind your back after each incident, and mother has investigated about it.”

Wu Mingrui felt a heavy weight on his heart and head.

Indeed… it was true…

But why would his father help hide something that his wife did wrong? Why is he still confronting his mother?

Stubbornly, Wu Mingrui turned to Lu Tianming, who was covering his head.

“Father, you know about this too, right?” Wu Mingrui asked softly.

Lu Tianming averted his eyes, choosing silence as Wu Mingrui, his only son, grappled with the consequences of his actions. Regret gnawed at him, if he wasn’t so obsessed, he wouldn’t be entangled with Li Yu.

Observing Lu Tianming’s actions, Wu Weirui couldn’t hide her disdain for his elegant facade and cursed, “Looks human but is worse than a dog!”

Wu Mingrui, still bewildered, blinked and focused on Lu Tianming.

Sympathetic towards Wu Mingrui, Jing Xingzhi suspected Lu Tianming was the one donning the metaphorical cuckold. Lu Tianming’s guilty conscience fueled Jing Xingzhi’s conviction, listing him as a key figure.

Despite the signs, Wu Mingrui couldn’t fathom his gentle and elegant father colluding with his wife. Unaware of the impending revelation, Wu Mingrui remained oblivious to the truth.

Wu Weirui planned to speak out and let the Wu family get rid of Lu Tianming and Li Yu, a family of sluts!

With a determined expression, Wu Weirui took her son’s hand, mustering the strength to disclose the painful reality.

Tearfully, she confessed, “Yuanbao is not your son; he should be… Lu Tianming’s son. Your good brother, the man had seeded!”
