Jing Xingzhi’s Daily Life in Ancient Times

Chapter 29 - III

Liu Fang smiled slightly and took out another thing that was not available in this era – playing cards.

The puzzle was first made into small pieces and then put together. In order to allow the puzzle maker to have a comparison picture, transparent silk cloth was used for dyeing.

The puzzle pieces look like a lot, but it was actually not troublesome. Liu Fang put a lot of thought into playing the cards because the modern ones couldn’t be applied.

He had to come up with a logical system by himself, so that each card could eat other card, plus the materials and difficulty of making the cards wasted Liu Fang a whole day of work.

“This is called poker. It can be played by two, three, four, five or six people. But it is best to play with three or four people. It is more convenient and interesting.”

Liu Fang made a special trip to the big gambling house the day before he came to the Wu house. After taking a tour, he found that the gambling house only had the original method of playing dice.

Mahjong, which was originally called Ma Diao in ancient times, did not exist! The predecessor of playing cards known as leaf cards!

Liu Fang took Liu Hua and played with a deck of cards to convince Wu Mingrui.

Wu Mingrui immediately said, “I’ll accept both of these!”

With the good stuff, his mother would definitely be able to relieve her boredom. Wu Mingrui was thinking about his mother, so he immediately asked Xiaowen to send the extra things to the main courtyard, while he continued to play cards with some addiction.

It had a beautiful name. If the thing was so good, his mother would definitely give him more money. He let Liu Fang and the others wait.

Unexpectedly, Xiaowen came back soon and brought Wu Weirui with him.

In Wu Mingrui’s heart, his mother was happy, but Wu Weirui was different. She came here to discuss business. Although she could make things by taking people’s things directly, she was not dishonest. Wu Weirui was a kind businessman.

“Did you two make these cards and puzzles?” Wu Weirui asked.

Liu Fang played the last card in his hand and asked, “I made it. What’s your opinion, madam?”

Wu Weirui looked at the shuanger who answered the question so generously and said with a smile, “I want to buy it at a high price. My shop sells these two items, is it negotiable?”

“Of course, it is negotiable.” Just sold it when he took it out.

Liu Fang knew that there was no patent protection in ancient times, so he didn’t really mind to sell the things he took out.

He knew that it was more likely to be a one-and-done deal. But before coming, Liu Fang had made preparations to inquire about the Wu family. He knew that this family was kind and could ensure that this deal would go ahead.

Wu Weirui laid in bed for several days, feeling completely sick. Now that she had business to do, she immediately became energetic, which made the worried Wu Mingrui dumbfounded.

Finally, the two parties reached an agreement, and Liu Fang received one thousand taels.

Once the matter was settled, it was inevitable for them to part ways with the Wu family.

Wu Weirui noticed Liu Fang’s appeal, and an idea sparked in her mind. She took Liu Fang’s hand and asked, “Fang Ge’er, do you have an agreement of marriage?”

Upon hearing this, Hua Amu sensed trouble. ‘Madam, don’t underestimate Fang Ge’er!’

Before Hua Amu could intervene, Liu Fang replied, “I have a husband.”

To dispel any potential speculation, Liu Fang added, “The man in my family is a scholar.”

After uttering these words, Liu Fang blushed slightly, knowing that Jing Xingzhi wasn’t his real husband. Nevertheless, he encouraged himself inwardly.

“Oh, you have a husband…” Wu Weirui looked disappointed, assuming Liu Fang was still single due to his clothing style appearance.

Wu Weirui’s current concern was her son Wu Mingrui.

After dispatching Li Yu and Lu Tianming to the streets, relief turned into worry. She feared it might be challenging to arrange Wu Mingrui’s marriage in the future.

Reflecting on Li Yu’s situation, Wu Weirui hesitated about choosing a daughter-in-law. Liu Fang, with his beauty, wit, and business acumen, impressed Wu Weirui.

It was just a pity… he was married.

Thinking about her son’s recent temper tantrums, Wu Weirui sighed. “You still dress like an unmarried shuanger. Remember to invite me to your official wedding banquet for blessings!”

“Okay,” Liu Fang replied, his face tinged with the thought of the upcoming wedding.

Finding him amusing, Wu Weirui joked as she walked to the door, “Who is your husband? Does he study at Huanshui Academy? Maybe my son knows him.”

Liu Fang responded, “Yes. His name is Jing Xingzhi.”

Wu Mingrui was so surprised he nearly bit his tongue. “Is he the one with the impressive aura?”

Wu Weirui murmured in amazement, “What a coincidence.” She didn’t expect her casual remark to hit the mark so accurately.

“Hello, sister-in-law, I’m Xingzhi’s roommate!” Wu Mingrui introduced himself, shocking Liu Fang and Hua Amu.

Hua Amu couldn’t believe it. “You really know Xingzhi?”

Liu Fang processed the information and smiled, saying, “The scholars in Mingxi Town no one is named Xingzhi, so they shouldn’t share the same name.”

“Oh, by the way, are you heading in the same direction? Should I arrange for a carriage to take you?” Wu Mingrui, thinking of his roommates, wanted to foster friendships and ensure their well-being.

Liu Fang replied, “I’m going to the academy to check things out. It’s not too far, so there’s no need for an escort.”

Upon hearing about the academy, Wu Weirui promptly nudged her son, “Mingrui, accompany Fang Ge’er. You’ve been home for days; it’s time to attend your classes!”

Wu Mingrui had stayed home to support Wu Weirui but was encouraged to return to the academy by his mother. The house, filled with reminders of Li Yu and Lu Tianming, was affecting his mental state.

Staying at home, Wu Mingrui’s skills improved, but his mental state worsened. Lost in thought, he began to feel detached.

Encouraged by Wu Weirui and entrusted with caring for his sister-in-law, Wu Mingrui was sent off with a gift, including the book boy Xiaowen.

Liu Fang headed to the academy, planning to stay in the outer courtyard for a few days. He had agreed with Liu Hua to part ways after selling their items. Consequently, as Liu Fang went to the academy comfortably in a carriage.

Liu Hua received a banknote, reluctantly accepting it, torn between refusing and appreciating Fang Ge’er’s kindness.

.

The Wu family’s two carriages sped towards the academy. Arriving during the post-class rush, the courtyards were bustling with students.

To avoid the inner courtyard’s restrictions, Wu Mingrui sent a letter to Jing Xingzhi, requesting him to come out.

When Jing Xingzhi arrived at the teahouse, a few people surrounded Wu Mingrui.

One of them, curiously glanced at Liu Fang and asked, “Brother Mingrui, is this little shuanger your brother or cousin?”
