Chapter 35 - I
Jing Xingzhi led the group downstairs, and Chen Fulang, immersed in sadness and crying, was startled by the group’s formation.
Shrinking against the wall, Chen Fulang quickly grabbed a stick, asking warily, “Who are you? What are you doing here?”
“Don’t misunderstand, we’re here to talk to you about Tan Xingwang,” Jing Xingzhi reassured, waving his hand. He turned to Wang Zhuang, instructing him to take the others away to avoid frightening Chen Fulang.
Jing Xingzhi added, “You must be aware that Tan Xingwang confessed indiscriminately.”
Chen Fulang, frowning, asked cautiously, “You haven’t said who you are.”
“I am Jing Xingzhi, a scholar. The deceased is my senior sister, and my teacher is Chief Fang of Huanshui Academy, the one who provides meals for the students. Have you heard of him?”
Jing Xingzhi continued, “Tan Xingwang used to live in the academy and knows my teacher. Due to his random confession, the real criminal almost escaped. My teacher, over 70 years old, fainted from anger and is still in the hospital!”
Jing Xingzhi’s tone grew angrier as he spoke.
As Chen Fulang listened, guilt gradually appeared in his expression. “I know Chief Fang. Is the old man, okay? In which medical clinic is he now?” Chen Fulang inquired.
“He’s at the Wang Family Medical Center near the county government office. But the crucial point now is to make sure Tan Xingwang changes his mind and doesn’t let the real murderer escape,” Jing Xingzhi emphasized.
“But…” Chen Fulang lowered his head, “I can’t get into the cell. The cell leader said I’m not a relative, and I can’t talk to the Tan family. They won’t let me in at all.”
Chen Fulang knew that, apart from Tan Xingwang, the Tan family didn’t think highly of him, but he didn’t expect them to prevent him from seeing Tan Xingwang, let alone letting him in.
With no other options, Chen Fulang’s eyes involuntarily fell on the young master in front of him.
This time, Jing Xingzhi had changed into richer-looking clothes to make things easier, creating a more reliable impression on Chen Fulang. Unable to get in himself, Chen Fulang considered this young master might have the capability.
Jing Xingzhi’s voice, soothing as nature, reached Chen Fulang’s ears: “I can take you into the cell, but I hope you try hard to persuade Tan Xingwang and prevent him from making a foolish decision.”
“I… I will try,” Chen Fulang replied, lacking confidence, his eyes reddening at the thought.
Tan Xingwang visited his stall daily, so Chen Fulang knew exactly what was on his mind. He had asked Tan Xingwang to consult his family, but Tan Xingwang disappeared for several days before returning to the stall, avoiding eye contact.
Understanding Tan Xingwang’s behavior, Chen Fulang knew the Tan family looked down on him as a widow.
Chen Fulang remained silent, his face grew cold and ignoring everyone. Tan Xingwang, however, continued enjoying three bowls of tofu pudding daily, seemingly oblivious to the tension.
Occasionally, when he saw Tan Xingwang, Chen Fulang felt unhappy, so he added chili pepper to the sweet tofu and sugar to the salty tofu, deliberately giving Tan Xingwang an unpleasant taste.
But that fool, when he ate that tofu pudding with added ingredients, he smiled at him as if he had eaten something good, without thinking about how weird he looked.
Chen Fulang thought about the past, and his tone became more certain: “I’ll go and persuade him, maybe it will be useful. Young Master, please take me to the cell!”
Jing Xingzhi nodded: “Thank you for your hard work, it’s better to do it sooner than later. I will take you to the cell right now.”
Chen Fulang only had five points of confidence because he knew that Tan Xingwang was filial. But if he couldn’t persuade him with his intentions. It would be good to see that fool once more.
Jing Xingzhi was different. He found Chen Fulang and observed him carefully. He was already very sure of how to deal with Tan Xingwang. As for whether it was eight points or nine points true, it depended on the follow-up.
.
Huanshui County Prison.
The cell leader opened the cell door, nodded, and let Wu Qing, the chief clerk, lead the men in.
That was right, it was Wu Qing who led Jing Xing and his group in.
After the case was heard in court, Wu Qing found that he had been tricked by He Zhifang and fell out with He Zhifang.
He controlled part of the power of the county government, and then used Zhang Tong’s name to stabilize the people first, and chose to completely join Chief Fang’s side.
In Wu Qing’s opinion, it would be foolish not to seek refuge here. Zhang Tong dared to push someone without seeing He Zhifang’s status while interrogating the case in court.
Now the wound on He Zhifang’s head was not healed yet!
Zhang Tong dared to do that, which showed that the emperor behind Zhang Tong valued the Chief Fang very much; otherwise, Zhang Tong would not be so anxious.
When He Zhifang was in the capital, he spent all day reading and preparing for exams. Wu Qing was a social person, knew a lot of news, and as much more sensitive to the court than He Zhifang.
“Young Master Jing, please come in and be careful where you step. It rained today and there was water in this cell, making the floor a little slippery.”
Wu Qing didn’t feel there was anything wrong with flattering a young man at all. This was Chief Fang’s disciple. When he went to the capital, he might be the emperor’s right-hand man!
If he didn’t flatter him now, when should he wait?
To curry favor, he had to serve people well and left an impression. In the future, when a person became wealthy, a melon and a half of dates would be enough for him to be promoted as the county magistrate.
Wu Qing thought beautifully, but Jing Xingzhi looked at his face and shook his head in his heart. A nest of snakes and rats!
Wu Qing led people all the way to the cell where Wang Xiang was imprisoned: “Young Master Jing, here we are. This cell is where Wang Xiang is imprisoned, and going inside is where Tan Xingwang is imprisoned.”
Wu Qing introduced, while glancing at Chen Fulang strangely.
He also knew this good-looking widow selling tofu pudding, but why did he follow to the cell?
