Gon Fricks
- Ow man, that hurts! - Killua shouted softly, unable to hold back any longer.
I could tell him to be patient, but it wouldn't do much good since he's deaf.
What on earth had happened that Killua said he had almost died? He said that there had been some incident in the cafe, which had resulted in a fight between some two blokes, in which Killua had decided to intervene. And from the state he was in, he got a hell of a kick out of it. I don't know who did it and how, because Killua hasn't told me all the details yet, but one of those guys gave him a deep wound in the shoulder, getting to the bone. And then the other guy did some weird attack that made Killua lose his hearing.
When I saw his condition and listened to his story, I was a little shocked and even angry at first, but I quickly realised that I needed to calm down and get on with his treatment.
A moment ago I returned from the pharmacy, where I bought everything I needed, and at the moment I am trying to stitch up his wound. I don't have much experience with it, but it'll do for now. It's a little rough, but it's working. He needs a doctor's help, but it's a long way to the hospital, and he needs some help right now, or he'll risk losing a lot of blood. And the hearing... we'll deal with the hearing later. It's a bit odd to be doing this in an alley, but there's nowhere to go. I've just arrived in Yorkshire and I haven't even got a flat yet. And anyway.
- That guy... - Killua suddenly spoke, staring at one point, which distracted me from my thoughts.
- А?..
- That guy I fought with... I haven't seen such strong fighters in a long time. He was superior to me in everything, and the few blows I was able to land on him... it didn't seem to hurt him much. Even though I didn't have a full charge of electricity... but even if I did... I'm not sure I could have handled him. I don't know who he was, but I don't feel like seeing him again. And that second guy... he seems a little weaker than the first guy... though he might be stronger, he just didn't show it.
- Killua.
- I can't compete with them yet. But I don't think it's impossible, and in the future if we do meet again, I'll have a better chance than this time.
He seems to be fixated on this incident. Apparently this defeat and forced retreat has made him a little depressed. I don't like it.
No~ no, this won't do, he needs to do something else and take his mind off it a bit. But first we need to go to the hospital, after all I've just stitched up the wound, and once we get there he'll have a doctor redo it properly.
I beckoned to Killua and we headed for the nearest hospital. In our situation we should not hurry, or the wound may open again, and the blood is still flowing, albeit weakly.
Damn it, I've barely been in this town before I started having problems. How the hell did this happen? Some two crazy people suddenly got it into their heads to start a fight in a cafe, and the worst thing is that Killua suddenly decided to interfere in this fight. Why? Why would he do that? Because as far as I know there were no people there by the time the fight started, which means that the furniture and the rest of the environment would have been damaged at most. So why would Killua get involved? It doesn't make sense. Maybe he figured they were dangerous on their own? But it's still a bit of an odd decision.
While I was pondering and trying to understand the reason for such an act, looking at my friend's ragged appearance, he suddenly turned to me.
- You know Gon... I don't know if you've noticed or not, but a lot of things have changed. And when I say a lot, I mean you and me and this town.
Hmm, what's he talking about?
- It's been a long time since the incident in East Goruto. It's really terrible, because almost everyone in Peijin died. And the Chimera Ants' invasion was tragic in itself, as they killed a lot of people. It's been two years since then. We didn't get to see each other very often. I had my own affairs, and you, as far as I know, were training and travelling around the world to learn more new things and improve yourself, right? And here I look at you... and then at myself and I realise... that enough time has really passed, and you have matured enough during this period. And I'm not just talking about your looks, I'm talking about your character. Before, looking at my condition, you would have reacted more impulsively. But now you're pretty good at keeping your cool. But at the same time, I can see that you're mostly the same old Gon I used to know, albeit a little older.
- Killua, you--
Killua's words struck me.
I understood completely how he felt, and I felt the same way. I missed him and he missed me.
A slight smile appeared on my face, just like Killua's. I wanted to hug him, but I knew that wasn't the best idea in this situation.
But after a few seconds the smile faded from his face, replaced by seriousness.
- But listen, Gon, this isn't the time to get all excited and emotional. I told you earlier that the city has also changed. If I thought I was imagining things when I came here, I'm more confident now. Something has definitely changed in the city, even if you can't tell at first glance, but that's because the change is internal rather than external. I can't explain what's changed, but it's definitely there. And I think those guys fighting in the cafe have something to do with it.
..... Honestly, it's hard for me to understand what he means, but I think once he's healed and back to normal, he'll be able to explain it properly. In the meantime, we just have to keep walking.
It was about a ten minute walk to the hospital and Killua's condition continued to deteriorate. His legs were gradually starting to shake more and more and his eyes were looking very tired. I began to worry about him collapsing to the ground before we reached the hospital.
But just when I thought I could use the extra help, we met another person we hadn't seen in a long time. Another old and close friend of mine, Leorio.
- Erm... hello guys....
His look and facial expression made it clear that he was now very much surprised by two things - Killua and me and Killua's condition.
- Hi Leorio, - I decided to finally start a normal conversation. - Listen, we are also very glad to see you, but as you can see Killua is not in the best condition now. He's been badly injured and has lost a lot of blood. Now he needs a doctor's help, so we're hurrying to the hospital. Could you please help us?
Leorio stood silently in place, scratching the back of his head and looking at Killua's carelessly stitched wound. Apparently he's trying to think things through.
- Hmm, so you need to deal with this wound? - he finally spoke. - You know, you don't have to go to the hospital.
- Huh? Why is that?
- You see, I live just round the corner, and the hospital's about ten minutes away. I suggest you come round to my place, where I'll deal with Killua's injuries. Plus it'll be free, you'd have to pay money for treatment.
- Wow, thank you very much Leorio! Let's go then.
We followed Leorio.
- Shit,' he muttered quietly. - I don't know what you've gotten yourselves into, but I hope it won't cost you your lives.
***
Leorio lived in a flat on the first floor of a four-story building. The entrance was not the cleanest, and it smelled... very peculiar. The flat itself was modest and not very spacious, but it had enough room to accommodate guests like us.
As far as I know, Leorio is still in medical school, so it's no wonder he lives in a place like this. He has a hunting licence, but he's still a student, so he probably doesn't have much money. But it's still a pretty nice flat.
We walked into the living room, in the middle of which was a sofa with clothes lying on it, and across from it was an old kinescope TV, which was surprisingly in pretty good condition. Also somewhere in the corner there was a table, on which there were a lot of notebooks, textbooks, and various medical instruments. It was at this table that Leorio sat down with Killua beside him and examined his wound.
- Well... I suppose it was you who stitched up his wound, Gon? It's good that you realised it in time and decided to do it, but the way it was done... I would say, but I don't want to swear.
- I'm sorry.
- You have nothing to apologise for. You're not a doctor and you don't have the right skills. Anyway, don't worry, I'll make it right.
Leorio removed the thread I used to sew up Killua's wound, then treated it, injected anaesthetic and started to sew it up again. I must say he was much better at it than I was. Compared to him, I'm a complete clueless. There's a reason he went to medical school.
Leorio didn't do anything else besides stitching up the wound. It follows that the bone is probably intact, although the depth of the wound made it look like it was. But let's not forget that Killua has also lost his hearing. We'll have to get Leorio to do something about that when he's done.
- Well, that's it. - said Leorio as he carefully pulled the last stitch and cut the thread. - Now the main thing is to try to move your hand as little as possible. Let it rest. It heals very quickly on you, as far as I know, but it still needs time. At least a couple of days.
- Thank you very much Leorio! You've been a great help.
- You're welcome, we're friends. Would you like some tea?
- Go ahead.
Leorio washed his bloodstained hands and started to put the kettle on. In the meantime, I decided to turn to Killua.
- How are you?
- I'm fine. - As I expected, even though he has no hearing, sometimes he can understand things just as well. - I could have stood it, but he gave me an anaesthetic so I didn't feel a thing. That doesn't change the fact that I'm tired and sleepy. The loss of some blood is taking its toll. Well, I think I'll recover quickly.
A few minutes later the tea was ready, and after waiting a little longer we began to sip it slowly.
- How are things going at school Leorio?
- Studying? Oh, how can I put it... it's pretty good. Of course, sometimes I have to study a lot, but I'm used to it. It's always the practice that's the most interesting. Of course live people will give to treat not immediately, but here to play with skeletons, and soon to study troupes in the morgue will give. It's a good opportunity to learn a lot of new things.
- That's cool. You must be almost at the level of a full-fledged doctor by now. You stitched up Killua's arm so well.
- Ha, don't be ridiculous. I may have learnt some of the basics of surgery, like stitching up wounds, but I'm a long way from being a proper doctor.
- Do you have anyone to look up to?
- Well...' he thought for a moment. - Actually, there is one person. He...
Suddenly the doorbell rang, which distracted us all, except Killua, who didn't hear it.
What? Someone came to visit Leorio? He didn't warn us about this.
- I'll go see who's there. - said Leorio, and putting the cup of tea on the table went to the door.
Who could be in there? Of course it is possible that they could be enemies, but I have such a calmness of mind. I am absolutely sure that everything will be all right, though I don't know where I got this feeling from.
Well, let's see who it is and I'll have some tea.
- Hey, Gong, there's a girl here. She says she knows you and that you two should meet.
A girl? What girl? I don't know any girl. Why does some girl want to see me?
A girl. A girl.
Girl.....
And then I come to a realisation that makes all the tea in my mouth come out.
PFFFFFFFFFF!!! Bloody hell, I realise what kind of girl it is!
Rushing out of my seat I run towards the exit of the flat and see the one I expected to see in the doorway next to Leorio.
- Bisky-sensei! It's so good to see you!
This is my teacher, Bisket Krueger, or Bisky as we usually call her. She hasn't changed a bit. Still in her doll-like outfit, just like herself.
- It's good to see you, too, Gon,' she said, a happy smile on her face. - You've grown up, I see. At this rate, you'll be taller than Leorio,' but suddenly the smile faded from her face. - But listen, I didn't come here just to meet old students. I have a serious conversation to have with you.
Serious talk? What's she talking about?
- A conversation? Hmm. Well, come on in and talk to me. You don't mind if Bisky joins us, do you, Leorio?
- No, of course you do.
Bisky came inside and followed me into the living room.
- Oh, hello Bisky! - Cheerfully greeted her Killua, despite his not very cheerful state.
- And hello to you, Killua. It's good to see you too. You and Gon have grown so much. - A smile reappeared on her face for a second, but then disappeared again.
I sat down with Killua on the couch, Bisky on a chair nearby, and Leorio decided to stand aside, but he was all ears.
- So what's all this Bisky talk?
- Listen Gon-' she was silent for a few seconds, making the tension in the air around her grow. - You see, as soon as you arrived in the city, you were immediately under surveillance. But not under surveillance by any enemies as you might think, you were under our surveillance. Me and my allies.
Wha~o? What is she talking about?
- At first, it was just a precautionary measure to make sure everything would be okay and you wouldn't get involved. But unfortunately it turned out to be the opposite. As you know, Killua got into a fight between two other blokes in a cafe and nearly got himself killed. You made a lot of noise with that fight and that's what got our attention. You see... the men Killua fought were not just hooligans or common thugs. They're not even Hunters as you might think. These men are representatives of a serious and vast criminal organisation called Passione. You've been out of town a long time, so I suppose you might not know about them. But believe me... these are very serious and dangerous people. They've only been around for a couple of years, but in such a short time, they've already gained a lot of influence. You've had the misfortune of stumbling upon their representatives, and I'm afraid you've been drawn into a very dangerous game because of it. A game that could cost you your lives. And I'm afraid you can't just give it all up and walk away.
- .... Honestly, Bisky, I don't really understand.
- I realise it's not gonna be that easy to understand. And I can't explain it right now. But you should know and realise that this is a very dangerous venture, one that you would have gotten yourself into.
- What? Why?
- Because it's directly related to your goal. At least one of them.
- А?!
- I can't tell you everything right now. As I see it, Killua's condition is pretty lousy and he needs time to recover. Let's say we meet again the day after tomorrow and you'll hear more about it then. I'm sorry, but it's really not a good idea to tell you now. You should get some rest. So?
- Well... er... and I guess... come on! It's a deal. I'll see you the day after tomorrow.
- Good, now I'm going to have to digress.
With the same serious look, but with a little bit of smugness, she left the flat, leaving me to my own thoughts.
Wow. She said that one of my targets had something to do with that criminal organisation Passione. I don't know what she meant by that, but I was interested. So the day after tomorrow, huh? Well, even if it's as dangerous as they say, there's no stopping me. Maybe that's what I came here for.
I'll have to tell Killua about it afterwards, cos he probably couldn't understand what was said.
Oh, by the way, I forgot!
- Leorio, I forgot to ask you something else.
- Oh, what's that?
- You see, in that fight, Killua didn't just get a wound on his arm. He also went deaf.
- What?! Why didn't you say so before? Let me see what he's got.
He took some special tools out of his desk and looked inside Killua's ears.
- Well... aha... well... well...
- So what's in there Leorio?
- Well, how can I put it... things are far from as rosy as I'd like them to be. You see, Killua's eardrums are completely ruptured, plus the middle and inner ear. That's pretty serious.
- You can help with that.
- I'm afraid not. It's an operation that requires a far more highly trained specialist than I am. All I can do now is just give him an anti-inflammatory. You'll have to go to the hospital.
- Bli~ing! We don't have enough money for all this. What do we do now?
Leorio was silent for a few seconds, obviously thinking about something.
- I have an idea. - he replied.
- You do?! What is it?
- You see, I'm currently doing an internship at a local hospital and I'm an assistant to a very good doctor. He's a very, VERY good doctor. He's got really good hands. He is good at everything, and that is not a joke or an exaggeration right now. I can ring him up and arrange for him to do the operation for free. He can do it so Killua'll be back on his feet in no time.
- Really?! Thanks a lot Leorio! I'm in your debt.
- Come on, we're friends. And this doctor himself likes treating people. I'll call him now, and tomorrow he'll probably do the operation. And the day after that, you and Bisky will go on your own business.
- Thank you very much. But still... what kind of doctor is this? Is he really that good?
- His name is Dr Diamond, and in my opinion, he's the best doctor in the world. You'll see for yourself soon enough.
- Oh, well, I trust you.
- And by the way, you don't have anywhere to go, do you? You haven't rented a flat yet? In that case, you can stay at my place for now.
- Thank you.
- Just be aware that I only have one bed. So.
- Don't worry. Killua will sleep on the sofa and I'll sleep on the floor. We've had worse conditions anyway.
- On the floor? All right... as you wish.
A lot happened today. That fight in the café, the meeting with Leorio and then with Bisqui, and a lot of strange things with Passione.
Yeah, things are getting weirder and weirder.
