Deep inside, Tetsuya Fujiwara couldn't help but start an internal rant.
This battle-hardened ninja was willing to do anything to win—even if it meant losing face.
Taking the scroll Sarutobi Hiruzen handed him with utmost care, Tetsuya quickly tucked it into his chest. His calm and collected manner only made Hiruzen view him more favorably.
"Ahem…"
Just as Tetsuya secured the scroll, Koharu Utatane cleared her throat.
Tetsuya's sharp instincts kicked in—he knew exactly what was coming next.
Here it is—the real discussion was about to start.
"Tetsuya Fujiwara, regarding the Chunin Exams… Hokage-sama didn't tell you everything to avoid putting too much pressure on you," Koharu began, her tone heavy with seriousness. "But now that the preliminaries are over, it's my duty as one of his advisors to make sure you understand."
Tetsuya listened intently, though inside, he was smirking. If she thought she could manipulate him that easily, she was sadly mistaken.
"The Chunin Exams aren't just about showcasing Konoha's strength as the leading ninja village," she continued, "they're also a crucial event that will determine our future mission volume. Fire Country's daimyo has sent officials, and many nobles and wealthy merchants will be attending tomorrow's finals."
"Koharu!" Sarutobi interrupted just as Koharu was getting to the key point, his voice firm.
But Tetsuya kept his expression neutral. It was becoming clearer that they were trying to push him into a corner.
Sarutobi shot Koharu a warning look, but she pressed on.
"Hiruzen, let me finish! Tetsuya, you must win tomorrow's match. Even if it costs you your life."
"Koharu, enough!" Sarutobi slammed his hand on the desk, clearly furious. "He's just a child! It's our responsibility to bear these burdens, not his!"
He turned away, casting a look of apology toward Tetsuya. What they didn't realize, though, was that Tetsuya saw through their whole charade. To him, this was nothing more than a well-rehearsed performance—like a play with monkeys on stage.
"Hokage-sama, Koharu-sensei is right!"
Tetsuya's voice rang out before anyone could react. His words were measured but firm, matching the gravity of the situation.
"I didn't fully understand the weight behind the Chunin Exams before, but I assure you now, Hokage-sama, I will not fail. Even if I die fighting Ay, I'll make sure to defeat him first."
There was a slight pause in the room, then Sarutobi sighed heavily, his demeanor softening.
"Tetsuya, I know. It's hard, I understand. To put such a heavy burden on someone as young as you… it's cruel, I admit."
His voice carried a tone of sadness, but Tetsuya could see the underlying strategy behind it. No doubt, this was meant to pull at his heartstrings. But Tetsuya wasn't going to be played so easily.
"Cough."
"Come now, Hiruzen. You can't protect them forever. As ninja of Konoha, we all have to face the harsh realities of life sooner or later."
Without warning, Homura Mitokado, the third of the advisors, stepped forward, silently positioning himself near Tetsuya.
"Tetsuya, I've seen your work with the Lightning Release: Chidori," Homura said, his tone neutral but commanding. "Its piercing power is impressive, no doubt. It fills a gap we've had in our Lightning techniques, and could be key in future battles against Iwagakure and Kumogakure."
Homura paused briefly, as if to let his words sink in before continuing. "Then there's your Thunder Beast Tracking Fang and your mastery of the Water Prison Technique. Both are remarkable. My question to you, Tetsuya, is whether you're willing to contribute these jutsu to Konoha?"
The request hung heavy in the air.
Tetsuya didn't flinch. He had expected this. As someone who had developed severe trust issues from growing up in a small, fading ninja clan, he'd always known that one day the village elders would come asking for his prized techniques.
And here they were.
But he wouldn't lose his cool. He wasn't born yesterday.
"Hokage-sama," Tetsuya ignored Homura Mitokado completely, turning back to face Sarutobi. "I have a question."
"Go on," Sarutobi said, clearly intrigued.
"If I were to offer these three jutsu to the village, would I retain the right to pass them down? Would the Fujiwara, Tanaka, and Uesugi clans have the right to use them as part of our legacy?"
Tetsuya's tone was sharp and clear. He didn't object to contributing his jutsu to the village. His only goal was to secure more leverage, more recognition for his clan.
Besides, the techniques weren't easily mastered by just anyone.
Chidori, for instance, demanded exceptional chakra control and an acute sense of timing—skills that not many ninja possessed. Even Kakashi, one of the most talented of his generation, could only master it thanks to his Sharingan.
Without the necessary abilities, attempting Chidori would be a fool's errand.
Then there was Thunder Beast Tracking Fang. It required such advanced manipulation of lightning chakra that only a handful of Konoha's elite even had the potential to use it effectively.
In short, Tetsuya wasn't too worried about handing them over.
Sarutobi smiled. He could tell what Tetsuya was angling for, and he appreciated the boy's cunning.
"Tetsuya, since you developed these techniques yourself, of course, you'll retain the right to pass them down," he said, his voice steady. "And yes, the Fujiwara, Tanaka, and Uesugi clans will have the full rights to use them as their own."
Tetsuya nodded, satisfied with Sarutobi's response. It was exactly what he wanted to hear.
"And as thanks for your contributions," Sarutobi continued, "you'll be allowed to select any two A-rank jutsu from the archives after the Chūnin Exams."
A-rank jutsu, huh?
Tetsuya didn't let his emotions show, but internally, he wasn't overly excited. Given his current status and power, being offered access to A-rank jutsu was nice, but it wasn't groundbreaking.
Still, he played the part.
"Thank you, Hokage-sama. I'm willing to contribute Chidori, Thunder Beast Tracking Fang, and Water Prison: Reflection to the village."
After a brief pause, Tetsuya agreed to Sarutobi's terms. He didn't need to drag this out longer than necessary.
"Good, good! I knew I could count on you, Tetsuya. You truly are the heir to the Will of Fire!"
Sarutobi's warm laughter filled the room as he got up from his seat once more, placing a reassuring hand on Tetsuya's head.
"You've done well, Tetsuya. Now, is there anything troubling you? Don't hesitate to speak up."
Before Tetsuya could respond, a member of the Anbu appeared beside Sarutobi, holding a sealed scroll.
Tetsuya hesitated for just a moment, giving the perfect impression of someone unsure whether to voice his concerns.
Sarutobi's voice was soft but encouraging. "Go ahead, Tetsuya. If there's something on your mind, speak freely."
