The rest of the afternoon was uneventful, filled with light-hearted conversation, laughter, and delicious food. They chatted about school, their friends, and even the latest manga releases. It was easy and comfortable, their shared familial warmth creating a bubble of tranquility that seemed to block out the looming reality of the Soul Society.
Later that evening, as the sun began to set, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, Kai sat alone under the Sakura tree, staring out at the park. He thought of his conversation with Aiko, about their upcoming weekend together. He knew it was necessary, knew it would help bridge the growing gap between them, but it still felt daunting.
As much as he loved his sister, he wasn't good at expressing his feelings. He had always been the quiet, laid-back one, preferring to go with the flow rather than initiate anything. It was why he got along so well with Hikari - she was the more assertive one, the one who pushed him to achieve more, to be better.
But with Aiko, it was different. She was his elder sister, his protector, his support. She had been there for him, right from the start, and he couldn't bear to disappoint her.
An abrupt explosion disrupted the tranquil setting, the force sending shockwaves through the park. A dense spiritual pressure enveloped the area, heavy and potent, making the atmosphere tense and fraught with danger. Kai's heart pounded in his chest as he looked towards his family and girlfriends, noticing their wide-eyed shock and the gasps of surprise.
"HIKARI!" He shouted, drawing his Zanpakuto in a swift, practiced motion. A translucent membrane, like an iridescent bubble, shimmered into existence around his loved ones, the protective barrier serving as their shield from the sudden threat.
Kai's eyes narrowed as he looked towards the source of the explosion. From the thick cloud of smoke emerged two figures, their presence menacing and powerful. One was a tall, slender man with pale skin and striking green eyes. His hair was jet-black, slicked back and styled in an unusual manner that reminded Kai of bat wings. His attire consisted of a white jacket, the high collar accentuated by lines of black, and matching hakama trousers. This figure's most notable feature, however, was the number '4' etched on his chest - the telltale sign of an Arrancar.
The other figure was significantly larger, towering over the first man with his brutish size. His skin was a dark, tanned shade, adorned with tattoos that covered his arms and chest, where the number '10' was prominent. His reddish-brown hair was styled into a mohawk, lending him an imposing look. His attire was similar to the first man's, the stark white contrasting with his dark skin. He exuded a sense of raw power, adding an extra layer of threat to the situation.
Despite the palpable tension in the air, Kai's face remained impassive, his grip firm on his Zanpakuto. The more he looked at the two figures, the angrier he got. He remembered them both from Dondochakka's memories, recognized them as Aizen's Arrancars. He didn't know why they were there, and frankly, he didn't care. They had attacked his family, albeit barely. For that, they were dead.
"You guys picked a really bad day to ruin my picnic," Kai called out, his voice echoing in the now silent park. His tone was casual, almost lazy, a stark contrast to the serious situation unfolding around them. But beneath the casual veneer, a barely concealed fury simmered.
The slender man, marked with the number '4', merely tilted his head at Kai, an unreadable expression etched on his pale features. "It seems we've interrupted something," he mused, his voice as cold as his exterior. "Our apologies."
Kai scoffed at the Arrancar's words, a cynical smile tugging at his lips. "Apologies aren't going to cut it," he retorted, his gaze hardening. "Why are you here?"
The second figure, '10', snorted, crossing his arms over his chest. "We don't owe you any explanation," he grunted, his tone dismissive.
Despite his usual preference for avoiding troublesome matters, Kai wasn't in the mood for any evasion. He had tried to live a peaceful life, tried to keep the complications of Soul Society separate from his life in the human world. But these two had crossed a line, and he wouldn't stand for it.
The larger of the two figures, '10', sniffed the air and crinkled his nose, turning to his companion. "Ulquiorra," he grumbled, "the spiritual energy here is too thin."
Ulquiorra, '4', glanced at him with a bored expression, seemingly unperturbed by the situation. "Stop complaining," he retorted coolly. "I had intended to come alone, but you insisted on tagging along."
While the two Arrancars continued their idle banter, Kai could see people in the vicinity starting to approach them out of curiosity. Being unable to see Hollows, the Arrancar's presence was instead perceived as a sudden strange commotion in the park. Unknowing of the danger that lurked, they moved closer, their faces a mix of curiosity and concern.
Kai's grip on his Zanpakuto tightened as he eyed the oblivious civilians. He had to keep them safe. His gaze flicked to '10' as the larger Arrancar eyed the approaching crowd hungrily. A dangerous glint appeared in his eyes, his lips curving into a wicked smile. It was clear what he was planning to do. Kai could almost see the intention to devour their souls radiating off him.
"No," Kai growled, his voice booming in the eerie silence that had fallen over the park. "Don't you dare!"
The big guy tilted his head, looking directly at Kai, his smile widening. "And what will you do to stop me, little shinigami?" he taunted, his voice mocking. "Are you going to fight us all by yourself?"
As the spiritual power of the larger Arrancar spiked, the civilians started to pass out, their bodies crumpling to the ground like fallen leaves. The sight of the innocent people in danger, the encroaching threat of an impending battle - it was all too much for Kai, who was someone that despised troublesome situations.
"Cannot have a single peaceful day," Kai grumbled under his breath. His fingers tightened around his Zanpakuto, the intricate hilt digging into his palm. Resignedly, he raised it high, his voice echoing throughout the eerily silent park, "Bankai, Mugon no Yūjin: Zettai Yūjin."
