Chapter 80: Chapter 80: Speed and Passion
Han Yu, a seasoned player, proudly declared that his gaming skills were above average among his peers. In the game, he could expertly handle a variety of vehicles—flying through the skies, gliding across the seas, or racing on land.
"Ultron and Wanda, you two go steal a car. I'll hack the gate's code, and Pietro, you cover me," Han Yu commanded swiftly.
Ultron, who was about to speak, raised an eyebrow in surprise. Han Yu had just voiced the exact plan he had in mind.
The mission was a heist. Players had to split into two teams: one to retrieve the money from the bank, and the other to secure a getaway vehicle.
Ultron, usually the team's leader, welcomed the change of pace. He decided to step back and observe how well Han Yu could manage the task.
"Boss, what kind of car do you want? Should we take the armored Kuruma?" Ultron asked.
"You bought that car? I thought it cost over 500,000. How did you manage to get it in just two days?" Han Yu asked, clearly surprised.
The armored Kuruma, valued at 520,000, was a prized vehicle in their previous game era, often dubbed the "Mission Car." While it was excellent at bulletproofing, it couldn't withstand explosions. Luckily, NPCs rarely used explosives, making it ideal for heist missions.
Sensing Han Yu's doubt, Ultron clarified, "I worked nonstop these past two days to save up for it. If Pietro had cooperated better, I could've bought a car for each of us. As it stands, I've spent almost everything on half-modifying this one, leaving me with barely enough to afford a rifle—I'm stuck with a pistol now."
Hearing this, Han Yu sympathetically patted Ultron's shoulder and said, "Let's use that. A half-modified Kuruma will do just fine."
With their getaway car decided, the team commenced their mission.
Smooth Sailing
The mission unfolded more smoothly than Ultron had expected. A crucial task was hacking the gate's password—a mini-game that tested the steadiness of the player's mouse movements. A single mistake would trigger the alarm. Ultron had always handled this part himself.
However, Han Yu performed the hack with astonishing precision and speed. By the time Ultron and the others secured the car and arrived at the bank's rear entrance, Han Yu and Pietro were already waiting, money in hand.
"Having a competent and cooperative teammate is such a blessing," Ultron said, his voice tinged with emotion.
For years, he'd carried less-skilled teammates—especially one who was notoriously demanding. The current ease and efficiency felt surreal, like a dream.
High-Speed Escape
The real challenge came next: the getaway. In this phase, accidents were frequent. The mission vehicles weren't their own modified cars, so losing control or skidding was common. On mountain roads, it wasn't unusual to see a car plunge off the edge.
Ultron considered taking the wheel but stopped when he saw Han Yu already in the driver's seat. He decided to watch how things would unfold.
"Everyone onboard?" Han Yu asked, glancing at the mini-map.
Once his teammates confirmed, he pressed the W key, and the car roared to life.
"Woohoo, let's fly!"
Even someone as composed as Ultron couldn't help but shout in excitement. Han Yu's driving skills were incredible—so precise it seemed like he'd been playing for years.
Every time it looked like they were about to crash, Han Yu swerved just in time, keeping the experience thrilling.
With high-quality screens and headsets, the sound of rushing wind and the rapidly shifting visuals made the players feel as though they were genuinely racing. Their excited shouts mirrored the intensity of the moment.
A Twist on the Road
"Do you guys have beef with other players?" Han Yu asked, noticing on the mini-map that another group had been tailing them since they left the bank.
"It's definitely Pietro's fault," Wanda snapped, glaring at Pietro. "He's always stirring up trouble, harassing other players, and disrupting their missions. Now someone's put a 5,000 AltCoin bounty on his ID!"
Pietro chuckled awkwardly, offering no defense. Wanda's accusation was spot on.
In GTA, players conducting public missions in open sessions could be targeted by others. While some players might help fend off police, others took the opportunity to hunt them down.
In his previous gaming life, Han Yu had often done missions in private sessions to avoid griefers and hackers. But now, with Ultron acting as their "real-life cheat detector" and monitoring the game, there was no need to worry about cheaters online.
Besides, GTA was such a groundbreaking game that hackers hadn't yet managed to develop cheats for it.
A bounty of 5,000 AltCoins on a single player was already the maximum reward for a D-level mission. Since the game had only recently been released, most players' skills ranged between D-level and C-level. For them, 5,000 AltCoins was a fortune.
"No worries—acting with reckless abandon is this city's signature style. Pietro, Ultron, grab your weapons and take them down!" Han Yu declared confidently.
"Haha, boss, I love your fiery temper!"
The moment Han Yu finished speaking, both Ultron and Pietro grinned. Ultron immediately pulled out a pistol and began firing at their pursuers.
Pietro, however, didn't bother with a gun. Instead, he switched his character's stance to unarmed combat, pressed the right mouse button, and raised a universal "friendly gesture" toward the chasing group—a bold middle finger.
This display had Han Yu laughing, and even Wanda couldn't help but join in the fun. Inspired by their antics, she drew her own pistol and began shooting at the trailing vehicles.
What unfolded on the street was nothing short of cinematic: three or four cars were chasing after their lone vehicle. But instead of fleeing in panic, Han Yu's team retaliated with two players firing back while another brazenly flipped them off.
The chaos didn't go unnoticed. The global chat lit up instantly:
"Did you see that? There's a car chase going down near Baker Street!"
"I saw it! The guy in the backseat of the car being chased keeps flipping them off—I'm dying laughing."
"Low on damage, high on disrespect!"
"Who are they chasing anyway? Wait… Pietro? That guy stole my cash once!"
"Same here!"
"Let's go, guys! Let's get him!"
With the global chat ablaze, more players joined the chase. If only they knew the person they were so determined to hunt was none other than the developer of the game himself—they might have thought twice.
When creating their in-game characters, Han Yu had suggested Pietro take the alias "Quicksilver." Han Yu explained that it represented "super-fast silver flash," which Pietro found absolutely fitting. Thus, Pietro's character was officially named Quicksilver.
Similarly, Wanda's character was named Scarlet Witch, as per Han Yu's suggestion. He told her it perfectly matched her magical persona.
These unique names made it easy for others to recognize and remember them, even amid the chaos.
Suddenly, Han Yu heard a notification echo in his mind.
"Mission triggered: [Speed and Passion]. Lead your teammates to complete this game mission. If no one dies, you'll earn 50 upgrade points!"
"'Speed and Passion,' huh? Things are getting more interesting. Let me show you all what real speed and passion look like!" Han Yu said with a smirk, ready to take on the challenge.
