Chapter 66: Chapter 66 - Wild Uncle Ben!
"Okay, thank you, Peter," Gwen said as she hung up the phone.
She had just called Peter to ask him to inform Miss Fish about her being late. From their conversation, she also learned about Harry's situation.
"I hope Harry's dad recovers soon. Maybe I should visit him. After all, Harry's family helped a lot when my dad was in a coma," Gwen muttered to herself as she pulled her white spider mask over her face.
From her vantage point atop a Brooklyn church, Gwen noticed a young girl standing in a yard below, looking distressed. Gwen sighed and shot a line of spider silk from her wrist, swinging down gracefully to the street.
"Can anyone help?" the little blonde girl called out, glancing around nervously.
Gwen approached her and followed her gaze to a black British Shorthair cat stranded on the branch of a tall tree. The frightened feline clawed at the bark, leaving deep scratch marks.
"Let me help," Gwen offered, launching herself up into the tree.
"Come here, kitty," she murmured, carefully scooping the cat into her arms. She jumped down with a soft thud and handed the cat to the girl.
"Here you go. He looks adorable," Gwen said, smiling under her mask.
But instead of gratitude, the girl frowned and planted her hands on her hips.
"Uh, is something wrong?" Gwen asked, confused by the girl's irritation.
"Of course there's a problem!" the girl huffed. "That's not my cat! I'm part of the Tree Love Club, and that cat was damaging the tree!"
Gwen froze, still holding the cat mid-air. "Well… uh… I don't particularly like cats either, especially black ones," she muttered awkwardly.
After the girl from the Tree Love Club stormed off in a huff, Gwen sighed in frustration. Her first attempt at being a superhero hadn't gone as planned.
As she turned to leave, she noticed an elderly woman struggling to cross the road on the opposite side of the street. The traffic light had turned red, and cars were speeding toward her.
With a flick of her wrist, Gwen swung over to the woman and grabbed her just in time. "Ma'am, safety first!"
She set the woman down on the sidewalk, but in her haste, she forgot to grab the woman's handbag, which was promptly run over by a car. Gwen winced as she saw the bag flattened.
"Uh… sorry about that," Gwen said sheepishly, trying to focus on the fact that she had at least saved the woman.
However, the elderly woman looked at Gwen with a blank expression and pointed back across the road. "I wanted to go there," she said.
Gwen sighed deeply, realizing she had brought the woman to the wrong side. After apologizing profusely, she backed away and quickly swung off.
"Ugh, this day just keeps getting worse," Gwen muttered.
As she approached her school, she noticed a commotion near an alley. A thief had snatched a woman's handbag and was sprinting away.
Gwen leaped into action, landing in front of the thief and blocking his path.
"Bad luck for you today," she quipped before shooting a web to pin the thief's hand.
She knocked him to the ground with a single punch, quickly retrieved the stolen handbag, and marched the subdued thief out of the alley.
When she reached the end of the alley, Gwen noticed two people standing nearby—a cameraman and a reporter holding a microphone.
"Spider-Man?!" the female reporter exclaimed, rushing toward her.
"Spider-Man, why the new costume? Does it symbolize something?"
Gwen panicked. Waving her hands, she quickly denied it. "I'm not Spider-Man."
"Then who are you?" the reporter asked, her eyes gleaming with excitement.
Gwen felt a sudden pang of dread—this reporter reminded her far too much of Antonia Aguilar, her overly persistent classmate.
"Uh, I'm just trying to help. Sorry, I have to go," Gwen stammered. She handed the bag back to the stunned woman and swung away without looking back.

Later that evening, Peter sat at the kitchen table, scrolling through his phone. The TV in the background displayed a news segment about the emergence of a new superhero.
"The new Spider-Man is here—and she's a woman! A helpful superhero making waves in the city," the news anchor declared.
Peter glanced up from his phone to see a shaky video of Gwen on the screen, clearly flustered and avoiding the reporter's questions.
Aunt May, flipping pancakes at the stove, turned to Uncle Ben and said, "Looks like we've got two Spider-People now."
Uncle Ben, munching on a piece of toast, replied, "That just means the city is twice as safe."
Peter listened silently as his aunt and uncle discussed the new Spider-Woman.
"Aunt May, who do you think is better?" Peter asked curiously.
Aunt May smiled warmly. "Why compare? They both seem like good kids." Then, she shot a sly glance at Uncle Ben. "Although, I imagine someone here might feel a little uneasy. Ben wasn't exactly an angel in his youth."
Peter raised an eyebrow, surprised. "Uncle Ben? Seriously?"
Uncle Ben cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses. "Well, uh… I had my moments. There was this one time when I was dating your Aunt May—"
"Ben!" Aunt May interrupted, rolling her eyes. "Don't you dare tell him that story!"
But Uncle Ben ignored her protests. "So, there was this bottle of green mint liqueur under my mom's bed. She wasn't much of a drinker, but she had that one bottle. One day, I grabbed it and ran straight to May's house."
Peter stifled a laugh as Uncle Ben continued.
"I threw a branch at her window to get her attention—didn't want to break the glass, you see. Anyway, we ended up climbing into a tree in the forest and just talking for hours."
Aunt May sighed, exasperated. "Ben, if Spider-Man had been around back then, you'd have been in serious trouble."
Peter chuckled, imagining his mild-mannered uncle causing mischief in his youth.

Meanwhile, at a hospital in the city, Norman Osborn stood in front of a floor-to-ceiling window, his arms and torso heavily bandaged from the recent lab explosion.
He set his phone down, which had just shown the news about the new Spider-Woman.
As he stared into the night, a strange transformation began. His eyes turned scarlet, the color deepening and spreading until they were completely blood-red.
