Chapter 79: Chapter 79: The First Invasion
A dull "bang" echoed as footsteps pounded against the ground, accompanied by the steady patter of rain. Peter's gaze lifted, and he saw a shadow moving swiftly toward Antonia Aguilar through the dark night.
The figure, agile as a cat, pounced on Antonia in an instant.
With a forceful "bang," the shadow collided with Antonia's back.
However, Antonia's reflexes were just as quick. She reached out, grabbing the shadow's arm and throwing her to the ground with a powerful motion.
The impact created a resounding "dong" as the ground trembled. Water droplets splashed everywhere, and the shadow's back slammed into the earth with a harsh thud.
After throwing the figure down, Antonia frowned and glanced at her chest, as if sensing something was amiss.
"Beep! Beep! Beep!"
A rapid electronic beep filled the air, and a small device attached to Antonia's chest blinked red.
Before she could react to remove the bomb the shadow had placed on her, an explosion erupted. A blinding white light filled her vision, and a surge of electricity coursed through her body, briefly paralyzing her.
The skirmish between the shadow and Antonia unfolded in mere moments, and Peter watched, now realizing the true identity of the mysterious figure.
A black cat?
He had not expected the shadowy figure to be none other than the Black Cat. The wild woman, clad in a tight black suit with silver hair, crouched like a cat ready to pounce.
Antonia, too, seemed to grow irritated by the Black Cat's unexpected attack.
"Huh!"
The Black Cat growled low in her throat before launching herself toward Antonia, claws extended in a vicious swipe.
Antonia, now recovered from the shock, reached out, grabbing the Black Cat's arm and flipping her to the ground once more.
The Black Cat's instincts kicked in immediately. She regained her balance and quickly fired a grappling gun, using the recoil to propel herself away from Antonia.
"Bang!"
The grappling hook snagged onto the wall, and the Black Cat was instantly pulled to safety, her body pressed against the wall like a feline.
Antonia was fast on her heels, charging toward her again. But before she could strike, the Black Cat used her agility to leap into the air, narrowly evading the attack.
Yet, Antonia's movements were swifter. The dark energy swirling around her body transformed into a rope, wrapping tightly around the Black Cat's ankle.
With a hiss, the Black Cat was yanked off her feet, her body crashing to the ground.
"Bang!"
She slid across the slippery surface, water spraying in all directions as she desperately clawed at the ground, trying to slow her descent.
With a muffled grunt, she skidded dangerously close to the edge of the rooftop.
"Snap!"
At the last second, Peter reached out and grabbed the Black Cat's arm, halting her fall.
"Huh! Huh!"
The Black Cat gasped for breath, her body hanging in midair. She looked up to meet Peter's gaze, who was now holding her at arm's length, his face masked in shadow.
Peter's head hung low, while the Black Cat's face remained level. They locked eyes, the tension palpable.
Frowning, Peter finally spoke, "Do you enjoy meddling in other people's business, Miss Hardy?"
The Black Cat smirked, a gleam in her eye. "This isn't the conversation I expected. You should be thanking me, at least."
Grabbing Peter's hand, she applied pressure, using him as leverage to flip herself onto the rooftop with ease.
Peter, still reeling from the strange alien embryo within him, glanced at the dark, sticky substance that had formed on the ground. He was filled with unease.
Was this an alien embryo? A newly birthed life form?
But why wasn't it something like a facehugger—something that should be teeming with vitality?
Confusion clouded his mind as he turned his attention back to Antonia. The fight with her would be far from easy, and now with the Black Cat's unexpected intervention, things were bound to get even more complicated.
Although the Black Cat's intentions seemed to be to help, Peter doubted she would make things easier. In fact, her presence might only hinder him.
On the other side of the rooftop, Antonia eyed the two of them with a raised brow. "I didn't realize you had a girlfriend, Parker."
"I'm not his girlfriend," the Black Cat responded quickly. "This is just a cat's way of repaying a favor."
With a flash of her claws, the Black Cat directed a sharp swipe at Antonia, then turned her attention back to Peter. "Wait a second—your name is Parker?"
Peter blinked. "Uh, yeah."
"Swoosh!"
Peter shot spider silk at Antonia, but her dark energy formed a shield that repelled the attack with ease.
The energy then coalesced into vines that lashed toward him.
He deftly dodged the attack, simultaneously pushing the Black Cat out of harm's way.
The ground cracked under the pressure of the vines, and raindrops splattered in every direction.
The Black Cat, still reeling from being knocked away, found herself backed against the wall. Watching Peter engage with Antonia, she muttered to herself, "I should've known this wouldn't be simple."
Shaking her head, the Black Cat fired her grappling gun, shooting herself toward Antonia once more.
"Bang!"
However, the attack was thwarted by the vines, which blocked her path.
Kicking off the ground with immense force, the Black Cat leaped toward Peter, landing beside him. "Hey, the police are coming. You might want to relocate this fight."
Peter dodged another of Antonia's attacks and glanced at the approaching police cars. He turned to the Black Cat and said, "You should talk to her."
Just as he was about to move Antonia off the battlefield, the Black Cat revealed what she had in her hand.
"No need for words," she said. "Running is probably the best option right now."
With that, she tossed several grenade-like devices at Antonia.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
The bombs detonated, sending powerful electrical surges in all directions. The raindrops amplified the current, sending a shock straight toward Antonia.
At the same time, the Black Cat grabbed Peter's arm and tugged him in the opposite direction.
"Let her experience the EMP," she said, grinning. "But we need to go. I can tell you're barely hanging on."
Firing her grappling gun once more, the Black Cat pulled Peter away, leaping to the next building.
Peter initially hesitated, wanting to stay and fight, but as he saw the police closing in, he relented and followed her.
Antonia, realizing the situation had turned against her, made no effort to pursue them. Her gaze lingered on Peter's retreating figure as the sound of sirens filled the air. After a moment, she stepped back, preparing to leave.
But then, something caught her eye.
The strange, dark substance Peter had vomited earlier began to stir. From the black, sticky mass, a plant suddenly sprouted.
The violet-like flower that emerged gave off an eerie, otherworldly scent, one that Antonia recognized immediately. It felt... familiar.
Was this the parasite within Peter's body?
Why was this flower growing? Had it developed under the influence of Peter's hormones?
As she crouched to examine it, the plant wilted rapidly in her hands, the spores that had remained hidden within it immediately invading her body.
What exactly had Peter become?
Antonia stood frozen in shock, the dark spores creeping into her bloodstream, leaving her to face an even greater mystery.
