Chapter 14: Departure

Jack set off on his mission, but little did he know that it was not as simple as he thought.

"He should know!" Carter couldn't help but complain to Colonel Phillips after Howard and Jack left. "This mission is too dangerous. We can't keep it from him."

"Do you think I don't want to?" Colonel Phillips glanced at the committee members who were smiling on the side. "It's precisely because the mission is so dangerous that we must ensure nothing goes wrong. That team has unstable factors, but we have no choice. Jack is our last hope, and we can't tell them about his existence! And we can't let Jack know about theirs either!"

......

"My instincts tell me that this mission is not as simple as it seems!"

Jack stood beside Howard's car and looked at him, saying, "Those committee members always look at me with a look that makes me uncomfortable."

"Don't overthink about it. They're all like that," Howard patted his shoulder and pretended to be relaxed. "Remember to come back alive. When you come back, I'll introduce you to a beautiful woman. You should find a girlfriend too!"

"Thanks, but I don't need it," Jack chuckled. 'Howard introducing a beautiful woman? Don't be kidding me. He's probably been with her before he's gonna introduce her to me.'

"I remember the expo is in two months, right? I'll definitely be there. Remember to save me a front-row ticket."  Jack said

"I will"

Howard patted his shoulder again, seeming to want to say something, but he didn't, and he got into the car and drove away. During this time, he would have other people protecting him, so nothing should happen.

Watching the car disappear into the distance, Jack narrowed his eyes. Howard's behavior made him more certain that there were details about this mission he didn't know about!

Although he didn't know what they were, Jack had trust in dealing with unexpected situations. His confidence would be even greater if he could find something useful from the salvage pool tonight!

On the night of the mission, Jack boarded the plane fully prepared, bringing only two handguns and a specially modified Lee Enfield sniper rifle by Howard.

Originally, he wanted to bring a Mosin-Nagant or a 98k. Still, after searching the entire arsenal of the Strategic Science Corps, there was nothing. He had no choice but to take the next best thing, the Lee Enfield, which was, at least, a specially modified version by Howard and was excellent in all aspects.

On the surface, it may seem like Jack is going on a mission with only a few weapons, but in reality, his personal space in the Multiverse Salvage Pool is filled with a large number of military weapons that he recovered from his previous battles. He's assured that he can handle a small-scale war with all the weapons he has.

With his skills and the plenty of weapons at his disposal, Jack is not worried about making it out of any situation alive, even if the mission fails. However, he still wants to complete the task to secure his promotion and pay raise.

Therefore, Jack focuses on the Multiverse Salvage Pool, hoping to retrieve something valuable to give him an extra advantage in the mission. He sits in the empty aircraft cabin, closing his eyes and entering a meditative state as his consciousness travels to the Salvage Pool.

'Hopefully, I can find something worthwhile,' he thinks.

Jack lowered his fishing net into the pool and stirred it evenly, hoping to catch something useful. After a few minutes, he lifted the net out of the water and saw a solitary yellow ball of light inside.

Before he could even wonder what it was, the ball of light broke free from the net and flew towards him at lightning speed. In an instant, it merged into his eyes!

"Uh?"

Jack felt a stinging sensation in his eyes, followed by an intense cooling sensation that was as refreshing as inhaling vapor rub. Tears flowed from his eyes uncontrollably.

Inside the cabin, Jack covered his eyes and felt the cooling sensation gradually dissipate. He let out a sigh of relief while also feeling curious about what the ball of light was.

As he thought about this, he opened his eyes and looked around.

Jack noticed that his eyesight had drastically improved. t was like his eyes had upgraded to a telescope. He could now see things clearly, even from a distance of thousands of meters, making him feel like a sniper.

However, he sensed that there was more to his eyesight, and suddenly, his vision changed, and the whole world turned black and white. It was a strange feeling; it was like watching a color TV in black and white.

For example, when he looked toward the cockpit, he saw two green figures appearing in his field of vision through the wall.

He pulled out his handgun from his waist and his sniper rifle from his back and noticed that they both emitted a yellow light in his eyes!

This ability reminded Jack of a similar ability - Eagle Vision!

Those who have played Assassin's Creed should know that Eagle Vision allows the user to see their target and other related information and even sense their emotions and intentions. The protagonists of the Assassin's Creed series have all used this ability.

For an assassin, this ability is fantastic.

With these newfound abilities, Jack relaxed in the cabin, closing his eyes to rest as there was still a long way to go before reaching the destination.

He even slept on the plane and only woke up when it landed on an aircraft carrier. After refueling, the plane took off again towards the German territory. After another dozen hours, the aircraft landed at a military base in Algeria on the evening of the second day.

When he stepped off the plane, a military officer greeted him and handed him a document bag containing all the information on the mission's target location, time, and route.

"Jack, we have been instructed to meet all your needs, including dinner and accommodations. A team will take you to the front line tomorrow morning," said the officer.

"No need!" Jack suddenly stopped and stuffed the documents into a burning empty oil drum on the side of the road.

He turned to the officer and said, "I'm leaving tonight. Just arrange for a car."

"Are you sure?" asked the officer.

"Yeah" replied Jack
