Chapter 31: Marvel Scientist Becomes God, Ch 31
Unfortunately, it was a bioelectric power plant without any human sensors; otherwise, Ye Hai could have observed the changes in the body's physical condition of that Black man.
Ye Hai sighed in regret.
Beside him, Gwen was shaking his shoulder, shouting, "Oh my God, why isn't anyone helping? Ye Hai, we need to go save him now…"
"It's probably too late to help him now," Ye Hai replied regretfully, his gaze fixed on the video without any intention of moving.
At that moment, a new development occurred: the glass water tank suddenly erupted with intense electrical sparks, and with a loud crash, the tank exploded, splashing water everywhere. An electric eel began to swim and leap on the ground, while the Black man lay on the ground, his arm moving unconsciously, as if there were still signs of life.
"He seems to still be alive!" Gwen exclaimed in surprise, but after seeing him turned into a charred figure, her expression turned to one of concern.
Before long, employees alerted by the commotion appeared on the video, shouting and causing chaos, yet no one attended to the pile of charred remains on the ground.
"What a pitiful person—can he survive this?" Gwen, who had a kind heart, worried about the stranger.
"Don't worry, he can pull through," Ye Hai said as he stood up. "Let's go take a look at him."
"Wait, you know him?"
Gwen looked at Ye Hai curiously; he had seemed completely indifferent moments earlier. Given what she knew about her boyfriend, it was unlikely that he would be interested unless it involved some research.
"I've met him once before," Ye Hai smiled slightly and then revealed his true nature. "Let's take our equipment!"
Their equipment consisted of a not too heavy metal case filled with various experimental materials.
"Of course," Gwen shrugged, somewhat helpless.
Ye Hai quickly left the laboratory, and Gwen followed with the case in tow.
They took the elevator to the top floor, where the bioelectric power room was located. They walked through a corridor filled with thick high-voltage cables and climbed up to a high platform where several people had gathered. Given that this was a high-voltage power plant, there were not many people around.
The incident had left them feeling uneasy; they were both saddened and fearful. This was not Max's sympathy but a normal human reaction when faced with such situations. There's a saying, "When the rabbit dies, the fox grieves," which perfectly illustrates the sentiment at play.
"Excuse me, excuse me!"
Ye Hai easily pushed past a few people, revealing the charred remains of poor Max, who had completely turned into a pile of carbon material resembling dry tree bark. Ye Hai crouched down, cautiously touching the "bark," which promptly cracked open, revealing withered skin beneath, its capillaries standing out like a dense web of wires.
"Be careful, don't touch him!" someone kindly warned. "It's not a good idea; you could get into trouble."
"It's okay, buddy; I think I can handle it!" Ye Hai chuckled.
At that moment, someone recognized him, causing a flurry of discussion.
"It's Dr. Ye. What's he doing here?"
"He seems very interested in the body."
"Look, he brought a syringe—does he plan to draw blood?"
…
Ye Hai took out his instruments and performed tests on the body, drawing several vials of blood. Just as he was about to take further action, the management from Osborn arrived and cordoned off the area, sternly warning the witnesses not to speak of what they had seen.
Finally, the manager politely addressed Ye Hai, "Dr. Ye, Mr. Norman is already aware of what happened here. He wants to know if you've made any new discoveries regarding the body, and whether you plan to preserve it for further experimentation?"
This was a request Ye Hai couldn't turn down.
He quickly nodded, "Yes, this person's genes may have mutated. Please take good care of the body and move it to my laboratory for further study."
"Dr. Ye, we need to consult with his family first. But rest assured, if it's for you, Dr. Ye, we will handle everything," the manager assured.
"Alright, I will wait for your good news," Ye Hai instructed. "It needs to be quick; if we delay, I'm afraid the body might deteriorate."
"There's nothing to worry about, Dr. Ye. You're not thinking that the body will just get up and walk away, are you?" the manager joked.
Ye Hai smiled slightly but said nothing.
He was indeed worried that this electric man might come back to life and escape. However, he couldn't linger around the corpse, as that would expose his abilities and violate regulations; any alteration to the body required family consent.
Several people helped move Max's body, while the employees shot dissatisfied glances at Ye Hai, but ultimately remained silent.
Once back in the lab, Gwen kept her head down, not speaking, looking glum.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?" Ye Hai asked, his bright eyes seeming to pierce through to her thoughts.
"Is this really the right thing to do?" Gwen murmured. "I'm sure his family must be heartbroken."
Ye Hai reassured her gently, "I believe his family needs to survive even more. Without a breadwinner, they will definitely require a significant sum for living expenses. If his body can serve as research material, their compensation could increase severalfold. That way, their lives will improve a lot, right?"
"Oh, yes, you're right."
Gwen agreed with him, realizing that using the body as experimental material was perfectly reasonable. She felt she might have overreacted earlier, showing a lack of the qualities a competent scientist should have.
"I need to do my best and look up to Ye Hai! Gwen!" she told herself.
Ye Hai was her boyfriend but also her goal to strive for.
