Chapter 56: Chapter 55 : To kill or not to kill ?
Hello you all ! I wish you a good day and commiserate your bad day (does that make sense ? Serious question since English's not my first language).
First things first, I will relieve you of any power stones, comments or reviews you're willing to part with. Don't be shy, now… also, I invite you to visite my Patréon page where you'll find more chapters, other stories and…. Hm, I can't think of another perk, right this moment. You can send me message ? But you can here too so… anyways, look for Cathbel on their search engine.
Finally, the minute culture ! Let's talk sci-fi and historical reimagining ! I'm talking of course about… For all Mankind. Okay, maybe it wasn't obvious. It start with the conquest of space from the Cold War with the Russians landing on the moon first. From there, the space race's never faltered… each season is separated by about 20 years I believe… anyways, I won't tell you more but so I highly recommend it ! And now… enjoy !😊
===========
The next day, after a good night's sleep… Ah, who am I kidding ? There was no way I could sleep with the idea of fucking Kingpin, breathing down our neck ! The fact that he has even an inkling that we go to school at Midtown… It's basically a death sentence ! And why's he even interested in us, anyway ?
Turns out, Peter has a bit of an outstanding vendetta against organized crime. Why, you ask ? The guy who tried to rob the Parkers at gunpoint, in addition to being an addict, high up to his eyeballs, was connected to the Russian mob. So, in order to prevent something like this to happen to another family, the teenager decided to wage a war against pretty much every criminal organization in New York… It doesn't matter that he knows he won't be able to prevent every crime from occurring.
Thankfully, because of our training, school and his part time job, he hasn't had that much time on his hand to really go at it. Yet, it seemed to have been enough to put us four on the big bald guy's radar. Huh ! Another bald guy who's powerful… Is it a trend ? Nick Fury, Charles Xavier, the Ancient One and now him ! The pirate, the space captain, the monk and the bear in a tuxedo. Sounds like the start of a weird joke…
Anyways… I have not slept much the night before. Still, it helped put things into perspective. Once I let my thoughts simmer a bit, I realized it was fear which made me want to murder the guy. I still kind of want to, and perhaps it'd be better to… However, I'm a wizard, Harry ! I mean… Yeah, I'm a magic user with a mutant power to shape reality pretty much how I see fit. I can wipe the idea of attacking the school from his mind, make him forget his suspicion, make him target something else or even… Turn him into a good guy !
The last makes me pause a bit, though… In many Marvel stories I know, messing with someone's mind generally doesn't end well. Jean Grey goes nuclear once the barrier between her and the Phoenix Force are broken. Xavier's big plan for Magneto's rehabilitation by making him work with children blow up splendidly when his people find out he's still alive… Okay, that's two of Xavier's plan falling through. I can't seem to find others… I'm sure there are, though ! And besides, there's the ethical aspect of it I'm not comfortable with.
Sure, manipulating Wilson Fisk's mind would probably save a lot of people. But what about the people he's already hurt ? I'd have to make him sorry and confess his crimes for him to pay for them… And even then, given his money, his show of repentance and his influence, he might get out with just a slap on the wrist. Then again, if he stops paying bribes to 'his' people, he might truly make some prison time. Sounds like a lot of pain, though…
It would be a lot simpler to simply kill him. Besides, I'm not sure Peter would be happy with me messing with the guy's mind either. He would probably feel like it's not fair or real or some shit. Then again, Peter's a smart guy. If I explain, he'll understand. He might not approve, but he'll understand.
Or, I can simply make him forget about his designs on our school and work with the others to take the big guy down ! That, I'm sure, will only be a temporary solution at best. The guy will flee while his army of lawyers fight the charges against him until, eventually, they win and he's allowed back in the country. Or, he'll make a deal with the FBI to provide information while he rebuilds his empire. These two scenarios actually happened : once in the comics, the other in the Daredevil show.
There's another possibility I'm kind of partial to… Causing enough blunt force trauma that Fisk forgets everything. Better yet, ends up a vegetable ! Now, that's the happy ending I want for this piece of shit !
I sigh deeply with my eyes closed, trying to exorcise my inner demons or expel them I don't know. Doesn't really work : I'm still annoyed and frightened.
Right at the crack of dawn, Doreen and Cory decided that we needed more training so they dragged us guys with them to Xavier's. I can't say I disagree, especially with the kind of bad guys we'll have to face. Fighting organized crime is kind like facing an army. We might be stronger, better equipped and knowing things they don't, they have an advantage we don't : they're numerous ! They have a chain of command. And they fear their bosses much more than they do heroes. Okay, that's actually three advantages.
I look around at the elevator I find myself in. According to Doctor McCoy, the current scenario is a covert assault on the office of a suspected criminal organization. The objective is to recover evidence while limiting combat to a minimum. I actually helped the good doctor design this exercise because of our predicament. After all, I know what kind of guy Wilson Fisk is… He doesn't live in an old mansion surrounded by his family members and his goons. He doesn't hole up in dingy places or warehouses. And he certainly doesn't spend time in shitty houses and apartments unless it's for business and only for a short time.
The guy owns a building downtown, use it for his 'legitimate' business and to launder his money, and the penthouse at the top serves as his home. You can't deny this of the guy : he has balls of steel ! I wonder if he would fit the definition of shameless. At least, Kingpin is amoral, ruthless and arrogant.
That said, he does deserve to be a little arrogant. I don't really know his story… In the Daredevil show, he is shown as a self-made guy, coming from working class family, with an abusive father and a loving, if a bit twisted mother. My memories might not be all up to snuff though since it's been decades since I last saw it… Even with magic, the memories of another life is quite difficult to retrieve.
The 'ding' of the elevator draws me from my thoughts and I put on my game face. My role ? I'm the distraction ! Again…
