Chapter 3: Patience
Early one morning, the tranquil ocean was shattered by a resonant buzzing sound that echoed through the waters. Schools of fish scattered in panic, creating a cascading ripple of movement beneath the surface.
On the foggy sea, an ocean exploration ship emerged, its silhouette cutting through the mist. The vessel's presence immediately drew Luo Chen's attention.
Upon catching the signal and sound emanating from the ship, a strange, mechanical voice resonated in Luo Chen's mind:
『After capturing the detection sonar, the host's concealment ability is enhanced, and new abilities are stimulated!』
"What the hell?" Luo Chen muttered internally, startled by the sudden intrusion.
This wasn't the first time he had heard this voice. It always appeared abruptly, startling him and leaving him with more questions than answers.
Curious, Luo Chen activated his internal "panel" to review his status:
Host: Luo Chen
Form: Growth stage
Body size: 3.5 meters high, 12.8 meters long
Weight: 63 tons
Attack methods: Bite, tail strike, impact
Radiation level: Low
Abilities: Sonar (utilizes underwater sound wave propagation)
The sonar ability was a game-changer. It allowed Luo Chen to detect creatures and objects within a significant range, rendering them unable to hide from his radar-like perception. Even more impressive was the anti-sonar capability, which made him effectively invisible to the ship's detection systems. He had become an underwater ghost, moving silently and unseen.
As the exploration ship churned the waters with rolling white waves, Luo Chen followed closely. Beneath the ship's shadow, he clung to its underside, stealthily hitching a ride.
Nightfall.
While crew members patrolled the deck with telescopes, others monitored instruments in the control room. Suddenly, bubbles erupted at the ship's edge, followed by the emergence of a monstrous head breaking the surface. Luo Chen's glowing eyes locked onto the vessel, assessing his target.
Although his lack of claws posed a challenge, it didn't stop him. With a powerful leap, he launched himself from the water, his flipper-like limbs propelling him onto the deck. The impact sent a tremor through the ship, scattering the crew in a frenzy.
"Boom!"
Shocked cries filled the air as bewildered crew members rushed out onto the deck.
"What happened?" one of them shouted.
"Did we hit something?" another asked nervously.
Unbeknownst to them, Luo Chen had curled up above their line of sight, camouflaged by the shadows. As the crew spread out to investigate, Luo Chen quietly slithered into the ship's interior, his wet form leaving a trail of water.
His slender body allowed him to navigate through the cramped corridors with surprising ease. Inside, he found various mechanical devices and instruments that, while advanced for the time, seemed primitive to his understanding.
The discovery brought clarity to Luo Chen's situation:
These humans belonged to a mid-20th-century era.
He was indeed on Earth, in the Pacific Ocean—the place of his birth.
Suddenly, the sound of shattering glass broke his train of thought. Luo Chen turned to see a blonde woman wearing headphones, staring at him in shock. Her expression morphed from disbelief to terror as she covered her mouth and let out a piercing scream.
"Ahhhh!"
The alarm brought armed crew members rushing to the scene. They found the woman unconscious, a puddle of water on the floor, and massive footprints leading out of the room.
"My God," one of them whispered, tracing the trail to the window. Just as he peered out, a massive, scaly tail vanished into the depths with a loud splash.
The next day, news outlets buzzed with reports of a sea monster sighting. While there were no photographs, a crude sketch of a thick tail disappearing beneath the waves fueled public fascination and speculation.
Luo Chen swam several kilometers away, his mind racing as he processed the encounter. His internal status panel displayed critical information:
Radiation level: Low
Evolution method: Absorb radioactive materials
"Radiation," he mused. "So that's the key to my evolution."
He recalled the monstrous trench creature he had encountered in his birthplace, the Mariana Trench. Could its terrifying power and form be the result of radiation-induced mutation? If so, the same could apply to him.
Driven by this realization, Luo Chen made a decision. His next destination was the southern Pacific, specifically Bikini Atoll. He recalled from his fragmented knowledge of history that between 1946 and 1958, the United States had conducted 67 nuclear tests in the region. The residual radiation there would be more than enough to fuel his next evolutionary leap.
With newfound determination, Luo Chen swam deeper into the ocean, his sleek body cutting through the currents like a predator on the hunt. The journey ahead promised both peril and power, but he was ready to embrace it. The age of monsters had just begun.
