Me, The Sovereign of the World? [Modern Evolution]

0029 – Her Killing Intent

The sixth-floor elevator landing was unusually quiet at night, quiet enough to evoke a sense of desolation.

In this dim corner, the light was sparse, as if time itself had frozen here.

The elevator doors were tightly shut, devoid of any sound, with only a faint light flickering on the walls.

Standing here, it felt as if the whole world had drifted away. Profound tranquility filled the surroundings.

But at this moment, Zoe's mind was unusually crowded with thoughts.

"I rarely go out, and there are strangers in my home. Could it be related to Benny, who urged me to go out?"

"Or perhaps, is this sudden appearance of a person related to my own changes? Could there really be something extraordinary hidden behind this world or the government already knows about me?"

The sudden turn of events had left Zoe with many doubts, adding to the caution she already possessed. Waves of thoughts surged within her, like a mist in the darkness of the night.

Contemplating, Zoe slowly approached the door with her keys in hand. Her five fingers spread out, revealing sharp nails, her vigilance heightened. She believed that as long as the opponent's combat power wasn't too abnormal, her claws could at least leave a few blood marks.

Even though the transparent world hadn't detected whether the person was still in her home, Zoe assumed that such an unexpected intrusion must involve some special covert means.

With a creak, the door slowly opened. The sound of its opening echoed through the tranquil night like a drumbeat. However, apart from that, there seemed to be no other sound.

What greeted her was the scent of a stranger, something Zoe hadn't noticed before she left. But there were no other heartbeat or breathing sounds.

With caution, Zoe searched everywhere, almost certain that there was no one in the house. There were no extra miniature cameras either.

Following the trail of the stranger's scent, Zoe wandered around the house. Judging by the trajectory and concentration of the scent, as well as the faint dust footprints and fingerprints that could be discerned by her super vision, Zoe quickly reconstructed the scenes that had occurred earlier in her mind.

In the simulated scenes in her mind, the stranger had not entered the kitchen or the bathroom but had a clear purpose in lingering around the computer desk in the living room and the bedside table in the bedroom. These were basically the places where valuables might be hidden.

After Zoe confirmed, indeed, the items in these places were missing. She didn't have any cash, but her laptop, which she had left on the table, was gone.

In addition, places like the bedside table and wardrobe were tossed around by the man, with no intention of tidying up or concealing. The bedroom was strewn with clothes and miscellaneous items scattered everywhere.

On the desk where the laptop had originally been placed, there was a note that read, "Dare to call the police, and I'll kill you!"

All of this looked nothing like the work of a professional from the extraordinary world that Zoe had worried about. It was even less likely to be related to Benny.

Although it was suspicious that a stranger entered her home just after Benny asked her to leave, and Benny's unknown past was also suspicious, based on Zoe's understanding of Benny over the years, regardless of who she used to be, he probably had turned over a new leaf by now.

Otherwise, Zoe would have moved away from such a suspicious person on the first day of her physical changes. Moreover, even if Benny was involved in this incident, he would never allow it to be done so unprofessionally.

The mess in the bedside table didn't seem like something Benny, who could tread carefully enough to step on a tree without leaving a trace, would do. Benny's style was to ensure that no one could find evidence of his presence.

This kind of crime was far from elegant. Instead of being related to Benny, it seemed more like the work of an inexperienced young thief.

Contemplating, Zoe temporarily set aside her suspicions of Benny, though not completely. She was definitely going to find the thief, which would make it easier to judge whether there was any connection between her and Benny.

As she continued to look around, she was relieved to find her old phone, which she used to record her situation, placed neatly on the table. The angle between the automatic pencil lead pressing down on the phone hadn't changed.

Zoe picked up the pencil lead and confirmed that the three notches on it matched those on her own pencil lead. Obviously, the old phone hadn't been touched at all.

The thief didn't even bother with the old flip phone from several years ago, let alone see its contents. She could rest assured that the contents of the memo hadn't been leaked.

However, this incident served as a wake-up call for Zoe.

Although she was very much a homebody and rarely caused trouble, it didn't mean that nothing could happen at home. There could still be special intruders like thieves.

Not causing trouble didn't mean trouble wouldn't come to find you. Just like the current situation. Zoe was definitely going to find the thief; otherwise, she wouldn't feel comfortable. So, perhaps she needed a relatively safer place to live?

But thinking about it, she realized that nowhere could be considered absolutely safe. Even in the depths of the mountains and forests, there was no guarantee that no one would come.

In fact, her current residence was sufficient. Today's incident was just a low-probability event. As long as she was at home, no one could sneak in silently. Even if she wasn't at home, the only thing worth considering was the old phone. A safer place to live could be put on the agenda temporarily, but there was no need to implement it immediately.

However, before that, it was best to carry the old phone with her. As soon as she thought of this, Zoe immediately put the old phone in her pocket.

With this, everything was basically foolproof. Her only Achille's heel. As long as she carried the old phone with her, she didn't need to worry about anyone breaking in. It also made it convenient for her to record anything she might need at any time.

However, not worrying didn't mean that she was going to let the ants into the dragon's den without permission. It was a kind of provocation and defiance.

Even if nothing was taken, the dragon would still be angry. Moreover, this damned thief had stolen the only valuable item in Zoe's home, the laptop, and left a threatening note.

Once Zoe confirmed that it was just a thief, her worried feelings dispersed. What followed wasn't blind anger but a mixture of calmness and anger. Losing the laptop didn't bother her much. What concerned her more was that someone had entered her territory without permission and dared to threaten her.

If it were her former self, she might have considered moving. But now... this kind of person needed to be punished. However, she couldn't let her own abilities attract attention.

With this in mind, there was hardly any hesitation.

Zoe changed into some clothes she rarely wore and opened the transparent world. The exciting world on the other side unfolded before her.

Following the scent left by the thief, Zoe pursued him straight out. She could track down troublemakers like mischievous kids and mice by scent, so naturally, she could track down this uninvited thief. It didn't take long.

"Let me see how bold you are," she muttered. A killing intent rose in Zoe's heart. While she intends to retain her good personality, it doesn't mean she's pushover.
