Chapter 2: Ascent

Year 734

I have achieved my second goal: fully training the active members of the Soulkeepers, and thus, we have realized our ascension. It is our duty to bring down those whose souls are as dark as the heart of a black hole. Our aim is to wield influence over the people.

For this, remaining weak is not an option. It was with this mindset that I took charge of my comrades' training and, in the process, attained a higher rank.

Except for the first to join my cause, all the members of my team were surprised to learn certain details about my past actions in the country where I grew up. There, I left my family and entrusted my responsibilities to someone I consider a brother.

I turned seventeen this year, and these months have been the most tumultuous of my life. Each day brought new dangers and challenges, leaving me barely any time to catch my breath. Assassins have tried to eliminate us multiple times because our group was making too much noise and challenging the established order. Yet, despite these incessant attacks, we have accomplished remarkable feats that have transformed our image in the eyes of the world.

Many citizens from all walks of life have started to see us as heroes. To them, we are the ones who dare to defy the powerful and fight for a better future. This perception, though flattering, is hard to bear. What does it mean to be a hero, after all? Is it performing courageous acts, saving lives, or simply being on the right side of history?

For me and my comrades, these titles hold no real importance. We do not seek glory or recognition. We have clear goals and dreams that we want to achieve, and that is what drives us. Whether we are seen as heroes or enemies does not change our determination. We know our mission is just, and we must continue, despite the labels placed upon us.

We still strive to save lives when they are threatened, but this is not a path [CENSORED] is willing to follow, especially if it gives them an opportunity to eliminate us without getting their hands dirty...

Kiyo, the continent of Technology

The whirring of helicopter blades filled the air, a constant reminder of the tension and urgency below. On the technological continent of Kiyo, the city of [CENSORED], once vibrant and bustling, was now in ruins. Buildings were reduced to rubble, and the streets were littered with debris. The dark night was torn apart by lightning as a powerful storm raged over the city, adding an apocalyptic atmosphere to the devastation.

Inside the helicopter, a pale, wide-eyed journalist clung to the edge of his seat, gripping his microphone with nervous intensity. His name was Taua Matetai, a seasoned reporter who had seen his share of chaos and conflict. Yet, nothing had prepared him for what he was witnessing now.

"This is Taua Matetai, reporting live above what was once the bustling metropolis of [CENSORED]," he stammered, his voice breaking with disbelief and terror. "Ladies and gentlemen, I... I don't know how to describe what we're seeing here."

Below, the city was dominated by a nightmarish figure. A monstrous entity, towering far above the tallest skyscrapers, its form a grotesque amalgamation of twisted metal and dark, pulsating flesh. Its eyes glowed with a malevolent, supernatural light, and with each movement, it caused shockwaves, toppling the few remaining structures.

The helicopter shook violently as the beast let out a deafening roar, its sound waves creating ripples in the air. Taua struggled to maintain his composure, his trembling hand pointing towards the creature.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this... this abomination is unlike anything we've ever encountered. It's... it's at least three times the height of the tallest building in the city, and—" he broke off, squinting to make out a smaller figure moving near the base of the creature. "Wait, I think I see something... or someone."

He leaned closer to the window, adjusting the camera's focus. "Yes, that's right! Amidst the chaos, there's a silhouette—a human figure, but not quite. It looks like they have... ears? Like those of a rabbit?"

The silhouette was indeed unique. Despite the crushing size of the monstrosity it faced, it moved with a fluidity and grace that seemed almost supernatural. Its ears, distinctly large and pointed, flickered with each movement, catching the light from the lightning strikes. This being, seemingly tiny against its colossal adversary, wielded a weapon that glittered with every flash of light.

"This... person—whatever it is—is directly fighting the monster!" Taua's voice grew animated, a mix of fear and admiration. "I recognize that mask... It's the leader of the Soulkeepers, the subversive fennec! They are really fighting!"

The camera zoomed in, capturing the figure in detail. Clad in a dark, supple suit that seemed to absorb the light, the fennec-eared individual leaped and dodged with inhuman agility. Each strike of their weapon hit its mark with precision, drawing howls of pain and fury from the giant.

"What we are witnessing defies belief. This lone warrior, against a beast towering over the tallest structures of [CENSORED], stands their ground. Who are they? And where did they come from?"

The helicopter circled the scene, offering different angles of the battle below. Taua's commentary continued, his voice now steadier but still tinged with incredulity.

"The resilience, the skill... it's like something out of a legend. This city, once a symbol of human achievement, now serves as the backdrop for a battle that seems almost... mythical."

As the battle raged on, the ground shook with each clash. The roars of the giant and the silent determination of the warrior painted a striking contrast. The city's fate hung in the balance, oscillating between destruction and salvation, all depending on the outcome of this titanic struggle.

Taua took a deep breath, trying to convey the magnitude of the moment to his audience. "Stay with us, dear viewers. We are witnessing a historic moment. The courage of this lone fighter against insurmountable odds... it's something you have to see to believe."

Suddenly, Taua's team managed to pick up the voice of the masked individual. They were calling for a rally. Their masked comrades, who had been covering them and protecting civilians, immediately gathered around their leader.

"The preparations are complete," they said in a clear, determined voice. "It's time to end this creature."

And with that, the helicopter hovered, capturing every moment of the epic confrontation unfolding below.
