Chapter 4.1: Sensational Death
The furious roar of Mayor Cross echoed throughout the entire town hall.
Cross’s speed was astonishing. In an instant, he reached Shi Feng and threw a punch at him.
At this moment, all the players looked at Shi Feng with glee, eager to witness the might of Mayor Cross.
Cross was a level 15 [Elite]. A single slap from him could kill any player at this stage. Yet, Shi Feng dared to provoke the mayor recklessly. No one in [Red Leaf Town] could save him now. He would either be confined to death or expelled from the town.
However, Shi Feng remained surprisingly calm. This puzzled the players. Was he prepared to die?
Just as Cross was about to strike Shi Feng, who had been motionless, suddenly sprang into action. Like a hunter waiting for prey, he swiftly drew his beginner sword and blocked the attack.
Bang!
Cross’s fist struck the beginner sword, sending Shi Feng flying. Just as he was about to fall to the ground, Shi Feng rolled in mid-air like an agile cat and landed steadily on his feet. However, his HP instantly decreased by 84 points. The beginner sword trembled, and its durability decreased by 1 point. If its durability reached zero, the weapon would become unusable.
Gasp!
All the players gasped in shock.
They had thought Shi Feng was just a newbie looking for trouble. But his performance clearly showed that he was skilled. Even though Cross was a Magic Category class with little physical output, being a level 15 [Elite] meant that any of his attacks could kill the current players. Yet Shi Feng didn’t die; instead, he used his weapon to minimize the damage.
“Even though he’s a Magic Category class, his strength and speed are astonishing,” Shi Feng muttered as he looked at his beginner sword emitting a mournful cry. Luckily, he had invested heavily in agility before. His attack speed had reached 4, which saved him. Otherwise, he would have been doomed, and the quest would have to be restarted.
“You damn pest, die!”
Failing in his first attack only fueled Cross’s anger. Suddenly, his clothes shattered, revealing jet-black fur all over his body. He transformed into a werewolf with sharp fangs and claws.
All the players were stunned. They hadn’t expected Mayor Cross to be an evil werewolf.
Cross then lunged at Shi Feng from behind, raising his sharp claws to strike at Shi Feng’s heart.
With only 16 HP left, Shi Feng smirked.
Cross’s claws suddenly stopped just centimeters away from Shi Feng’s heart. However, before he could finish Shi Feng off, he was stunned for 1 second by a charge from a level 25 guard.
During this time, Shi Feng quickly moved away.
As Cross regained his senses and chased after Shi Feng again, he was interrupted by another guard.
Both guards were level 25 warriors. Although they weren’t [Elite], their damage output was extremely high. With just one charge and regular attack from each guard, they took away over 300 HP from Cross. In an instant, Cross’s HP dropped to just over 1700.
“These guards are indeed formidable. Their attack power is incredible,” Shi Feng joked as he watched the embarrassed Cross.
The guards were the protectors of the town, specifically tasked with safeguarding the townsfolk and defending against evil. With the mayor turning into a werewolf, proving he wasn’t human but a spy for evil forces, the guards wouldn’t hesitate to treat him as a wild beast and kill him.
Sherlock’s quest seemed demanding, but in reality, all it required was for the mayor to initiate an attack and for the player to withstand the initial blow. Once that was done, the mayor would reveal his true nature, and the rest could be left to the guards.
In the previous iteration of the game, this Unique Quest had caused a stir in [White River City] because the mayor was a spy for the evil forces. This revelation made many players reconsider their views on NPCs, realizing that they might not always be trustworthy and could even be disguised agents of evil.
At the same time, players were amazed by the method used to lure the mayor into attacking. However, the player who managed to accomplish this task had likely racked their brains to figure it out and had only succeeded after much effort. After completing the task, they naturally wanted to show off and posted the strategy online, mostly through Reddit or Quora, which ultimately benefited Shi Feng.
