Chapter 73: Am I worthy of her or not?
As Izana entered his mansion, the sight of Eva sleeping peacefully on the couch brought a soft smile to his face.
She must have been waiting for him, her delicate frame curled up in a cozy blanket.
Izana (softly to himself): "Well, looks like she's tired."
Without a second thought, he gently scooped her up in his arms, holding her in a bridal style, careful not to wake her.
As he made his way towards their room, he couldn't help but glance down at her peaceful face.
Her chest rose and fell with each breath, completely unaware of his gaze, her features soft and relaxed in sleep.
Once inside their room, Izana carefully laid her down on the bed and pulled the covers over her. He stood there for a moment, watching her sleep.
A wave of emotion hit him—gratitude, love, and doubt all at once. He knelt by her side, brushing a lock of hair from her face.
Izana (in his mind): "I don't think I deserve this wonderful woman…"
His thoughts weighed heavy as he reflected on everything they had gone through together.
Eva had given up everything to protect her sister, Ellen, and their child. She had stood by him through battles, hardships, and the dark shadow of their father, Diego. Through it all, she remained a pillar of strength for him.
Yet, the more he thought about it, the more Izana wondered if he was worthy of her sacrifices, her unwavering loyalty.
Izana's voice in his mind softened with emotion.
Izana (in his mind): "She's sacrificed so much, stood by me in all of this chaos. How can I ever repay her?"
He leaned down and pressed a soft kiss on her forehead, vowing to protect her just as fiercely as she had protected him and their family.
Eva stirred slightly but remained asleep, a soft sigh escaping her lips as Izana settled in beside her.
Izana (whispering): "I'll make sure you never have to carry this burden alone."
Toshinori entered the room, his eyes immediately falling on Ellen, who was fast asleep, curled up from exhaustion.
He stood by the door for a moment, watching her breathe steadily. The lines of stress and fatigue on her face were softened in sleep, and a sense of guilt washed over him. He should have been there sooner.
Hawk, who had been sitting nearby, quietly approached him.
Hawk: "Mom was waiting for you to come home, but she was too tired. She finally passed out a little while ago."
Toshinori looked at his son, who had grown into a strong young man. His heart swelled with pride and sadness simultaneously. They stepped out onto the balcony to talk, not wanting to disturb Ellen.
Toshinori (with a soft smile):"Thanks for looking after her, Hawk. She's been through so much."
Hawk gave a small nod before his face turned more serious.
Hawk: "Dad… there's something I've been wanting to ask you."
Toshinori motioned for him to sit beside him.
Toshinori:"Go ahead, son."
Hawk: "How did you end up trapped in the Demon World? And… why? I mean, who did this to you?"
Toshinori exhaled deeply, knowing it was time to share the truth with his son.
Toshinori: "It was because of Diego, Ellen's father… your grandfather. He didn't want me in the picture, not with my bloodline."
Hawk frowned in confusion.
Hawk:"What do you mean? What does your bloodline have to do with it?"
Toshinori gazed up at the night sky for a moment before explaining.
Toshinori:"Your mother, Ellen, comes from the Azaria bloodline—descendants of the Goddess herself. Diego, as the King of Russia, wanted to keep their lineage pure, untainted by anything he deemed unworthy. My Devil powers, my blood… he saw them as a threat to that purity."
Hawk's fists clenched at the idea of his own grandfather wanting to destroy his father.
Hawk: "So… he tried to kill you?"
Toshinori (nodding):"Yes. He stabbed me in the back, quite literally. While I was unconscious, my body fell into the Demon World. He told everyone I was dead, and for years I was trapped there. He thought he'd succeeded."
Hawk's face hardened as he processed this information.
Hawk:"But Mom… she knew something was off, didn't she?"
Toshinori smiled proudly.
Toshinori:"Your mother is the smartest person I know. She couldn't believe I was truly gone, and she figured out something wasn't right. That's why she chose to protect you, Hawk. She sacrificed everything—her throne, her status—just to ensure you'd be safe from Diego's grasp."
Hawk fell silent, taking it all in. His mother had been protecting him from the start, keeping him hidden from a powerful enemy within their own family. He felt a deep sense of gratitude and anger building within him.
Hawk: "So… all this time, she's been carrying this weight alone."
Toshinori (placing a hand on Hawk's shoulder):"That's why we're going to put an end to this. Diego will face justice, and the Azaria bloodline will continue. You're a part of that legacy, Hawk, both the Goddess's and mine. But it's your choice what you do with it."
Hawk looked up at his father, his resolve strengthening.
Hawk: "I'll protect Mom. I'll protect our family. And Diego… he won't win."
Toshinori nodded, his eyes filled with pride.
Toshinori:"I know you will, son. Together, we'll make sure he doesn't."
With that, the two sat in silence for a moment, the weight of the conversation heavy, but a shared understanding now between them.
As the conversation shifted, Hawk couldn't hold back anymore and decided to bring up something that had been on his mind for a while.
Hawk:"Dad… there's something else. I've been feeling… different. My powers, they aren't just the Devil powers from you or the Divine powers from Mom's bloodline. I think I also have something from Grandpa Izuku… the One for All."
Toshinori's eyes flickered with recognition, but there was no surprise.
Toshinori (with a calm smile):"I already sensed it, son. From the moment we first met again weeks ago, I knew."
Hawk blinked in surprise.
Hawk:"You did? But… how?"
Toshinori leaned back, thinking for a moment.
Toshinori:"One for All is a unique power. It can only be passed on to someone worthy, someone who has the heart of a hero. When I first sensed the mix of powers in you, I knew you were carrying that torch."
Hawk looked down at his hands, clenching his fists as he processed this.
Hawk:"But how do I control all of it? The Devil powers, the Divine blood, and now One for All? It's like… they're pulling me in different directions."
Toshinori's expression softened with understanding.
Toshinori: "That's a natural feeling. Your powers come from different origins, but they don't define who you are. You do. You're a mix of everything: the Goddess, the Devil, and a hero's spirit. What matters is how you use them."
Hawk nodded slowly.
Hawk: "Grandpa Izuku never really talked about One for All with me. I always thought… maybe it skipped me."
Toshinori chuckled.
Toshinori: "Your grandfather probably wanted to let you figure things out on your own. He knows you're capable of more than you think."
Hawk (determined):"Then I'll figure it out. I'll master all of it. I won't let Diego, or anyone else, tear us apart."
Toshinori placed a firm hand on his son's shoulder.
Toshinori:"And I'll be here to help you every step of the way. You're not alone in this, Hawk. We're in this together, as a family."
Hawk gave a nod, feeling the weight of his powers but also the support of his father and the strength of their bond.
Toshinori watched Hawk's face carefully as he continued, knowing that sharing this part of his past was crucial for his son's understanding.
Toshinori:"You see, Hawk, I wasn't always the powerful person you see before you. I was quirkless for most of my early life. Like Ken, who had a weaker version of Bakugo's Explosion Quirk, and Shoya, who originally had a weaker version of Shoto's Ice Quirk."
Hawk's brows furrowed in confusion.
Hawk:"Wait, you were bullied for being quirkless? I thought you were always strong."
Toshinori nodded, the memories flooding back.
Toshinori:"Yes, we were bullied constantly. People saw us as weak because we didn't have quirks, and we endured a lot of hardship because of it. But that all changed when All For One kidnapped us. He saw potential in us, twisted though it was."
Hawk: "Kidnapped? What did he want?"
Toshinori: "He wanted to experiment on us, to manipulate our bodies and minds to create something stronger than what this universe had ever seen. The powers we received were beyond anything anyone could imagine. But in the process, we lost our memories—everything that made us who we were."
Hawk's eyes widened in disbelief.
Hawk: "You lost your memories? How did you get them back?"
Toshinori:"It wasn't easy. After we were given our new powers, we were left adrift without our pasts. It wasn't until Ken absorbed the powers of the Dragon King that he started to remember. It triggered something within him, and suddenly, he had flashes of our old lives."
Hawk: "And Uncle Shoya?"
Toshinori: "Shoya had a similar experience. His Grand Marshall and the Titans he met along the way helped him recover his memories. They showed him the powers he his predessors wielded, and it all came rushing back. But it took time, and a lot of fighting to uncover who we really were."
Hawk contemplated this, a mix of emotions swirling inside him.
Hawk:"So you lost everything just to gain it back in a different way. But you didn't give up, even when things got tough."
Toshinori smiled softly at his son.
Toshinori: "Exactly, Hawk. We fought to reclaim our identities, and in doing so, we found family. You see, it's not just about the powers we have; it's about the connections we make along the way."
Hawk: "And those connections… they're what make us strong, right?"
Toshinori nodded proudly.
Toshinori:"Absolutely. No matter how powerful you become, always remember that the bonds of family and friendship are what truly give you strength."
Hawk took a deep breath, feeling inspired by his father's story.
Hawk:"Then I'll make sure to honor those connections. I won't let them down, just like you didn't let us down."
Toshinori placed a hand on Hawk's shoulder, a firm grip that held all the love and support of a father.
Toshinori:"I believe in you, Hawk. You're destined for greatness. Just remember, we're all here for you."
Hawk felt a surge of determination as he nodded, ready to face whatever challenges awaited him with the legacy of his father, his mother, and the power of his family by his side.
Hawk: "What about you, Dad? How did you remember your memories?"
Toshinori glanced at his left Devil arm and continued.
Toshinori:"When I lost my memories, I fought many subhumans like me. My personality changed, and I developed trust issues with heroes because I lost my left arm due to some of them."
Hawk was taken aback.
Hawk: "So, what about this Devil arm?"
Toshinori: "You'll learn more about it later. I always wanted a perfect weapon, so I made my sword using my own bones and flesh."
Hawk's eyes widened in shock.
Hawk:"Does Mom know?"
Toshinori: "She knows everything. If anyone hurt her the most, it was me."
Toshinori: "When we were kids, your mother confessed her feelings to me, but I rejected her and called her a monster."
Hawk was stunned by this revelation.
Hawk: "But why did you do that?"
Toshinori: "Because Diego told me back then that I was just quirkless and Ellen was the future queen of Russia. He advised me to stay away from her."
Hawk looked shocked again.
Toshinori:"During a fight, I was stabbed with my own sword. That's when my true Devil powers activated, my left arm regenerated, and I finally regained my memories."
Hawk looked at Toshinori and asked,
Hawk: "Did Mom forgive you?"
Toshinori glanced at Ellen, who was peacefully sleeping.
Toshinori: "Yeah, she accepted me when I was powerless, and she accepted me when I became a devil. She's the true goddess I could have ever dreamed of."
After that, Hawk smiled at his father's words, feeling a sense of pride and connection to both his parents.
Hawk: "I'm glad to hear that, Dad. Mom really is amazing."
Toshinori nodded, his expression softening as he continued to watch Ellen.
Toshinori: "She has faced so much for us. You know, Hawk, family means everything. We fight for each other and support each other through thick and thin."
Hawk looked thoughtful for a moment before responding.
Hawk: "I want to be strong like both of you. I want to protect Mom and everyone else."
Toshinori placed a hand on Hawk's shoulder, looking him in the eyes.
Toshinori: "You will be strong, Hawk. You have the blood of both a goddess and a devil in you and you have the power of strongest Hero. Just remember, strength isn't just about power; it's also about heart and determination."
Hawk nodded, inspired by his father's words.
Hawk: "I won't let you down, Dad. I'll train hard and make you proud."
Toshinori: "You already make me proud just by being my son."
Just then, Ellen stirred slightly, her eyes fluttering open. She looked at both of them with a warm smile.
Ellen: "What are you two talking about?"
Hawk: "Just some father-son stuff, Mom."
Ellen chuckled softly, her heart swelling with love for her family.
Ellen:"I hope it involves being good and not causing trouble."
Toshinori: "Always, my queen."
As they shared a moment of laughter, Hawk felt a renewed sense of purpose. With his father and mother by his side, he knew he could face whatever challenges lay ahead.
