53: Lunchtime on the Train
Rocking along the tracks, the train clattered forward. The fact that it was a train and not an electric one added to the rural charm.
I hadn’t ridden it often; in fact, I might have ridden urban trains more frequently. But since it was familiar to where I was born and raised, it felt very comfortable.
The more we moved forward, the more the rural scenery unfolded, and I even felt a sense of relief.
Well, if asked whether I prefer living in the city or the countryside, I’d still choose the city.
Maybe as I get older, my answer will change, but for now, the city is more comfortable.
It’s simply more convenient.
Having a convenience store and supermarket within walking distance, and being able to find entertainment with a short train ride, is honestly wonderful.
In the countryside, the only place to go on weekends is the mall.
And if you go, you’re likely to run into someone you know, leading to awkward interactions.
Well, I didn’t have many acquaintances, so those awkward encounters were few.
By the way, I come from a fairly rural area.
When I was taken in by the Aimoto family, I moved a long distance to get here.
If I say that snow piled up in winter as a matter of course, maybe that gives an idea.
Yes, I lived in a reasonably rural place.
Thinking back, despite it being a long vacation, we visited either house frequently, which shows how close we were.
We were close.
My father and mother, Asahi and Sanae.
Sometimes I wonder why things turned out this way—even though I’m the cause of the discord, so it’s not really my place to say.
Realizing now why I had a sense of avoidance about just spending a long vacation idly, I frowned slightly, but my stomach growled loudly, as if to say it didn’t care about such thoughts.
Kamidama, who was leaning against my shoulder, laughed softly and looked at me.
“Oh, it’s lunchtime already. Here, take this.”
“Oh, thanks… rice balls. Nice preparation.”
“I just made them quickly this morning. Ideally, I’d avoid eating in a place like this, but…”
Since there’s no one else on the train, let’s call it safe, Kamidama said with a slightly mischievous smile, opening the window a little.
It was a considerate statement for me, or rather, a very sweet one.
Indeed, there were no other passengers.
With ventilation, it shouldn’t be a problem—I rationalized, then unwrapped the rice balls.
“Let’s eat.”
“Go ahead.”
I took a big bite, and at the same time, a shutter sound clicked.
As mentioned, the only people in the car were Kamidama and me.
And my hands were occupied with the rice balls—so it was obvious who took the picture.
Kamidama, holding her smartphone, smiled brightly.
“Don’t mind me, just eat.”
“It’s hard not to notice… Why are you taking pictures of me? It’s not fun.”
“No, it’s actually fun. Your expressions are so visible. Seeing you happily eating makes me happy. I just had to record it.”
“Your reasoning was all over the place…”
Where did “so” come from? It was a leap in logic as long as a transcontinental transfer…
I glared at her, but as usual, it had no effect, and she started taking selfies with me.
She’s too free-spirited…
I tried to distance myself, but she protested.
“Hey, don’t run away. Come a bit closer, okay?”
“But it’s hard to eat…”
“Just a little, just a little. Please…?”
“…Hurry up, then.”
Even if I wanted to complain, she provided the food.
If she’s asking, I have no choice… Her face got close, and I stiffened.
Looking into her beautiful hazel eyes slowed my thoughts.
So I didn’t notice right away when she gently took the rice ball from my hand.
“Say ah.”
“Ah… ah.”
I reluctantly ate the remaining large part of the rice ball, and soon after, there was a beeping sound.
It wasn’t a shutter sound.
Wait, was that…!
“You recorded a video, didn’t you!?”
“Hehe, you noticed a bit late. I got lots of cute shots of you.”
“Got lots of… come on…”
Kamidama tightly held her phone and smiled, clearly not intending to delete it. I sighed softly.
Well, since she provided the food, I can’t complain too much…
In the still far-off destination-bound car, I decided to consider this as another memory.
