Chapter 23: Single
Yamamoto Ryuusei couldn't help but ask curiously, "Yuki, what do your parents do? They seem so busy."
Komiya Yuki pouted slightly before replying, "They work in the grain trade. During harvest season, they have to travel everywhere to collect crops. Every year on my birthday, they're never around... but I've gotten used to it."
Looking at the sensible Yuki, Ryuusei reached out to gently ruffle her hair, his tone soft. "In the future, we'll celebrate your birthdays together, all right?"
Komiya Yuki's face turned redder than a paper lantern, her gaze flickering with emotion.
Meanwhile, Yamanaka Seiji, who was hiding in the bushes nearby, suddenly shouted excitedly, "It's happening! It's happening!" He clutched a struggling little dog—Inuzuka Kenta's partner, Akamaru—in his arms, accidentally shaking it in his enthusiasm.
"Seiji, keep it down! They'll notice us!" whispered Inuzuka Kenta urgently, his eyes filled with concern for Akamaru. "And give him back already! Poor Akamaru doesn't deserve this!"
Yamanaka Seiji gave Akamaru a quick pat, smoothing down his fur, and grinned mischievously. "Calm down. He's just helping me contain my excitement. Honestly, Kenta, if I hadn't covered his mouth earlier, we'd have been discovered ages ago."
Sarutobi Hiruzen sighed, shaking his head. "It's just Ryuusei patting Yuki's head. What's there to be so excited about?"
"It's not just a pat," added Koharu Utatane, her eyes sparkling. "It's the first confession we've ever witnessed!"
"Confession?" Hiruzen asked in disbelief, lowering his voice. "How can you tell?"
Koharu grinned knowingly. "Because Yuki told us she'd do it today!"
Nearby, Shimura Danzo rolled his eyes and muttered, "I don't know why you're all so worked up. This is hardly worth spying on."
Inuzuka Kenta crossed his arms and grumbled, "Damn it, what's so great about Ryuusei? Why doesn't anyone confess to me?"
Everyone turned to him and groaned. Shimura Danzo didn't miss the chance to mock him. "Maybe it's because you have... a slight misunderstanding about what being 'handsome' means."
As the group bickered, Uchiha Kagami shook his head and said, "Honestly, I don't think Ryuusei even realizes what's happening. He's so focused on training. He might just reject her outright."
Koharu frowned, worry flashing across her face. "If that happens, how will Yuki handle it? Especially with all of us watching..."
Yamanaka Seiji leaned back, smirking. "Then we'll all duck and hide. But knowing Ryuusei, even if he agrees, he'll probably tell her he's too busy training to spend much time with her."
Koharu sighed softly. "That won't matter. For a girl in love, just being able to see him every day would be enough." Her cheeks turned faintly pink as her gaze drifted briefly to Uchiha Kagami.
"Unbelievable," muttered Seiji. "Some people really settle for so little."
"Quiet down," Danzo whispered sharply. "If you keep this up, they'll hear us!"
The group finally fell silent, returning their attention to the scene unfolding between Ryuusei and Yuki.
Komiya Yuki took a deep breath, her cheeks flushed as she asked softly, "Ryuusei... why are you always so kind to me?"
"Ah?" Ryuusei blinked, confused. "Kind? Isn't this just normal behavior between classmates?"
Yuki shook her head, her voice trembling slightly. "No, it's not. You've bought me herbs, cooked for me, taught me techniques, and even protected me from bullies. No one else has ever made me feel so safe."
Ryuusei tilted his head, puzzled. "But Yamashita Shigeru does the same thing for you too."
Yuki's expression froze for a moment before her thoughts darkened. Damn you, Yamashita! If only you didn't exist, Ryuusei would only have eyes for me!
Watching Yuki's face shift through a kaleidoscope of emotions, Ryuusei suddenly felt a pang of realization. The moonlit setting, the two of them alone... Was this... a confession? His heart skipped a beat. No way! This must be one of those life illusions—thinking someone likes me. Besides, where's her best friend? Isn't someone supposed to be standing by to pull her back if she gets too nervous?
"I like you, Ryuusei!" Yuki blurted out, her voice trembling but resolute. "Will you be my boyfriend?"
Ryuusei froze, utterly stunned. Seriously? Aren't we too young for this? He hesitated, his mind racing. She's beautiful now, and she'll probably grow into a real beauty. But... I'm only eight! I don't have time for this—I need to focus on training. I should reject her.
But as he looked at Yuki's trembling figure, her tear-filled eyes locked on his, he couldn't bring himself to say it. Instead, he heard himself stammering, "A-All right. You... you can be my girlfriend."
Yuki's tears turned to joyful streams as she rushed forward, hugging him tightly.
Ryuusei gently patted her back. "But I'll be busy with training, so I might not have much time to spend with you."
Yuki pouted but nodded. "Then I'll just train alongside you from now on."
The classmates, unable to contain themselves any longer, burst from their hiding spots, cheering loudly.
"Finally, Ryuusei is no longer single!" laughed Uchiha Kagami.
"Ugh, how envious!" grumbled Sarutobi Hiruzen. "I've got to find myself a girlfriend next semester!"
Shimura Danzo scoffed. "With your looks? You'll only get one if you become Hokage!"
As the group teased and celebrated, Yuki was surrounded by the girls, blushing furiously as they bombarded her with questions.
Meanwhile, Ryuusei returned home later that night, exhausted but content. As he saw his shadow clones diligently practicing in the courtyard, he chuckled to himself. Sitting down at his desk, he began sketching designs for cute outfits his classmates had requested.
For Senju Miyuki, Uzumaki Mito, Uchiha Madara, Senju Hashirama, and even Senju Tobirama, Ryuusei poured his focus into creating garments that would suit their personalities perfectly.
By the time he finished two hours later, he nodded in satisfaction. Tomorrow, Aunt Yamashita Ekeko would help him bring these designs to life.
