Chapter 49: Chapter 49
Under Uzumaki Chito's expectant gaze, Nagato was finally forced to shout, "Grandpa!"
Uzumaki Chito smiled kindly.
To others, however, seeing someone with such a youthful appearance displaying that kind of smile felt oddly unsettling. It was an image that clashed with expectations, yet none dared to comment on it.
The oppressive aura that had subdued the Six Paths of Pain dissipated, allowing Nagato to regain control of his powerful technique. Still, he couldn't meet Uzumaki Chito's gaze directly, his eyes darting away in avoidance.
If Nagato hadn't already discerned Uzumaki Chito's identity from his earlier words, he would have been unworthy of being the leader of the Akatsuki. The legendary figure standing before him wasn't just anyone. He was Uzumaki Chito, a figure of Konoha's distant past and the teacher of the First Hokage himself. The same Uzumaki Chito who had left Konoha Village, taking Naruto Uzumaki, the son of the Fourth Hokage, under his wing.
Nagato had never imagined he carried the blood of the Uzumaki clan.
"Nagato has finally found his people," Konan said warmly, genuinely happy for her comrade. Since Yahiko's death, Nagato had changed, becoming an entirely different person. His actions had grown extreme, almost to the point of no return. Seeing this reunion seemed to bring a glimmer of hope.
"Alright, I just came to see the bloodline of the Uzumaki clan. Now that I've seen it, allow me to introduce you to someone—Naruto, your nephew," Uzumaki Chito said, pulling Naruto forward.
In truth, Uzumaki Chito didn't know Nagato's exact seniority. However, since both he and Minato had trained under Jiraiya, this familial connection seemed close enough.
"Hello, Uncle!" Naruto said cheerfully, clearly thrilled to discover another relative.
"Hello… Nephew," Nagato replied awkwardly, unsure of how to respond. The Uzumaki clan had so few members left in the world that such a meeting felt surreal.
When the Land of Whirlpools was destroyed, Uzumaki Chito had tirelessly searched for surviving clan members scattered across the lands. Yet his efforts had yielded little success. Only through his understanding of the world's events, gleaned from the original plotline, had he been able to trace Nagato's bloodline to the Uzumaki clan.
Others, like Uzumaki Karin, were also among the scattered descendants. However, for now, she remained safely hidden away in Orochimaru's laboratory.
The moment of familial reunion was heartwarming, but the peace didn't last.
"You're Uzumaki Chito, the First Hokage's teacher?"
A grating, arrogant voice interrupted the scene. Hidan stood there, brandishing his large scythe, his tone dripping with disdain. He clearly didn't regard Uzumaki Chito with any seriousness.
"If I use your body as a sacrifice to Jashin, the god will be overjoyed! Hahaha!" Hidan burst into laughter, his gaze fixed on Uzumaki Chito like a predator eyeing prey.
Nagato's voice turned cold. "Hidan, stand down."
Hidan, unfazed, roared in defiance. "Shut up! Are you hesitating now that you've met your own people? Aren't we supposed to make humanity fear pain and war? Isn't that your purpose as leader? Or are you abandoning that now?"
Nagato ignored Hidan's outburst and turned his attention to Kakuzu. "Kakuzu, do you feel the same way?" he asked, his voice sharp.
Kakuzu remained silent, standing beside Hidan in quiet solidarity. His actions spoke louder than words.
Finally, Kakuzu addressed Uzumaki Chito with uncharacteristic respect. "Lord Uzumaki Chito, it's an honor to meet you."
Uzumaki Chito's gaze lingered on Kakuzu, his expression filled with nostalgia. "I know you. Hashirama once told me about you—the one who tried to assassinate him and lived."
A flicker of recognition passed between the two. Both Uzumaki Chito and Kakuzu were relics of a bygone era, their lives stretched across centuries of history.
"So, are you my enemy as well?" Uzumaki Chito's tone grew cold, his eyes narrowing.
Kakuzu's response was blunt. "I just want to fight."
Kakuzu had already surmised that the earlier miracle of weather manipulation had been Uzumaki Chito's doing. As someone who had lived an unnaturally long life, Kakuzu found little to excite him anymore. Yet the prospect of battling a legend like Uzumaki Chito ignited a rare spark of interest.
"Even if it means your death?" Uzumaki Chito asked, a faint trace of admiration in his voice. He respected Kakuzu's relentless pursuit of strength, even in the face of danger.
Kakuzu hesitated for a moment before replying solemnly. "Yes, even if it means death."
Before anyone could react, Hidan chimed in with his usual brashness. "Then we can kill you too, right, Kakuzu?"
Ignoring Hidan's comment, Kakuzu focused solely on Uzumaki Chito. "Prepare yourself," he said gravely.
Without another word, Kakuzu and Hidan launched a coordinated attack. Black tentacles erupted from Kakuzu's body, lashing out toward Uzumaki Chito like serpents. Hidan's massive scythe spun through the air, the blade glinting with a sinister curse.
The sheer ferocity of their combined assault was enough to make most observers tremble. But not Uzumaki Chito.
Among the onlookers, only Uchiha Obito and Naruto remained unshaken.
"Two idiots courting death," Obito muttered, unimpressed. To him, their attack was no more than a minor annoyance to someone of Uzumaki Chito's caliber.
Naruto, meanwhile, was brimming with confidence. To him, there was no one in the world who could harm his grandfather. Grandpa is invincible.
"Grandpa, be careful! Hidan's curse activates if he gets your blood!" Nagato warned, his voice laced with urgency.
Uzumaki Chito stood motionless, utterly unbothered by the impending attack. He made no move to dodge or defend himself.
A cruel smile spread across the faces of Hidan and Kakuzu as their attacks connected—or so they thought.
Clang!
The sound of metal clashing reverberated through the air. Both attackers were forced to retreat several steps, their expressions twisting in disbelief.
Hidan's scythe was shattered, its head completely missing. The black tentacles Kakuzu had summoned lay severed, writhing uselessly on the ground.
Standing unscathed amidst the wreckage of their assault, Uzumaki Chito smiled faintly. His voice was calm, yet carried an unmistakable air of dominance.
"Is that all?"
