Chapter 9: So, that is it?
I had been accepted into the academy and in a few days I would start my life as a student at the Leaf Village ninja academy. But before that, I would need to leave the only home I had ever known in this life.
Yes, apparently, if you were an orphan and joined the academy, you would receive a monthly stipend and would live in a small apartment during your time in academy. Although I wasn't a fan of sharing space with other kids, I was a little sad about moving out. I hated changes in my past life and that didn't change in this life.
I should have realized it sooner—I hadn't seen any academy students at the orphanage since I was reborn in this body.
"Even though you're leaving here, know that you can always come back to talk to your friends or with me whenever you need."
Miss Kaori was with the rest of the matrons saying goodbye to the children who were leaving the orphanage. Besides me, 16 other kids had passed the academy's entrance exam and would also be leaving.
Despite hating changes, I was a bit happy. After all, I couldn't train as I wanted at the orphanage, and this training pace wouldn't help me advance as I desired.
"Kenshin-kun!"
Kaori-san's voice caught my attention, pulling me out from my thoughts to look at the woman who had been so kind to me.
"You forgot this! I'm sorry—after your accident, we kept it in storage and I kind forgot to give it back to you. It belonged to your father, didn't it?"
I was surprised when a pair of green glasses was pushed toward me.
Wait a second… I recognized those glasses. Weren't these the green glasses Naruto wore at the beginning of the anime? Were they from the owner of this body? Then how did Naruto find them? Has he met Hoshino Kenshin before? I hadn't encountered the boy all this time.
Maybe Hoshino Kenshin really did die from that lightning strike. Of course, that made sense, as I had ended up in his body. So Naruto must have found them in the orphanage's storage. I didn't expect this, but it wasn't anything too important.
"My glasses? Right… They were my father's. Thank you, Kaori-sama!" I took the glasses with a nervous smile.
"Don't forget, even though you won't live here anymore, you'll always be welcome to visit Kenshin-kun."
She really was a kind person. Despite everything, she was the one that I most spoke to in this new world and I felt a feeling of genuine gratitude towards her.
"Thank you for everything, Kaori-sama!" I thanked her from the bottom of my heart.
"All set? We need to go."
The voice of the Jounin who would accompany us to our new housing interrupted our goodbyes.
Soon, I turned my back on the Leaf Village orphanage alongside the other orphans. Everyone was excited and nervous about starting a new phase of their lives and I must admit… I shared that anxiety.
After a few minutes of walking, I followed the Jounin to the door of my new apartment. The building wasn't much, looking rather simple and its location seemed closer to the academy.
"Apartment 509, here it is!" the Jounin said, opening the apartment door. "There's a map of the village on the table. Every month, you can pick up your stipend at the academy's finance office."
Indeed, there was a map on the table in the small apartment's living room. It didn't seem very big but it had a table, some appliances, and a kitchenette in one corner. There was a door that probably led to the bedroom and bathroom.
"Here's the first month's stipend." He handed me an envelope, which I quickly took. "Your classes start next Monday at 8 a.m."
With that, the Jounin turned and left the apartment.
Wait, that's it? They just throw five-year-olds into an apartment with money and expect them to fend for themselves. No wonder Konoha had so many rogue ninjas.
I sat down on the chair and opened the envelope to count the money—8,000 Ryō. I didn't yet know how much things cost here, so I wasn't sure if this was a lot or a little for the month, but I would find out soon enough.
I was still somewhat in shock from the whole situation. I got up and checked the cabinets and fridge, finding both empty. Apparently, I would need to buy supplies and probably clothes. Now that I wasn't at the orphanage, I couldn't wear the clothes they provided anymore and didn't have any other clothes.
I looked at the glasses I was still holding and quickly put them on, heading to the bathroom, the only place in the apartment with a mirror, to adjust them.
"They actually look good. I'll need to get some clothes to match them," I said, staring at my reflection. "Well, time to go shopping."
