Chapter 53: Madara's Mission
Madara pulled a black piece of paper from his robe and handed it over.
"A black-level mission?" Gen murmured as he took it. A black mission signified a Jōnin-level task, explaining why Madara sought him out.
After reading through the mission details, Gen frowned slightly and asked, "Are you sure this was assigned to you by the clan leader?"
Madara avoided the question, pretending to admire the scenery outside the window.
"This mission... seems complicated," Gen said seriously.
Madara, sensing that Gen was now engaging with the task, dropped his casual demeanor and nodded solemnly. "It's difficult but not beyond our capability. Right?"
Gen glanced at him and replied, "I haven't agreed to join you yet. First, tell me how you got this mission. I can't believe the clan leader would assign you something like this."
Madara shrugged. "It's simple. The clan is running low on personnel. The war has been ongoing for a month, and the two-front battlefield is stretching us thin. Especially with the Hyuga clan—Hyuga Tennin has personally taken to the frontlines and launched at least 15 major assaults on our defenses. A few almost succeeded. The situation is critical, and Father is even considering heading to the battlefield himself if things worsen.
"The Jōnin stationed within the clan have all been deployed elsewhere. At first, Father didn't want to give me this task, but after I pestered him and he saw the shortage of hands, he relented."
Gen nodded, accepting the explanation, and turned his attention back to the mission.
The mission details were straightforward: After a month of being besieged, the Hyuga clan was getting desperate. While they still had some reserves, they began planning for the long term and dispatched people to acquire food across the Land of Fire. The task was to investigate signs of Hyuga activity in the southern region, where suspicions had arisen.
"All the routes into Hyuga territory are blocked by us. Even if they gather food, how would they transport it back?" Gen asked.
"Through the skies," Madara replied coldly. "In the Warring States era, there is a small clan called the Yohara. They possess unique chakra abilities that allow them to communicate with animals. This clan once received favors from the Hyuga and would undoubtedly help them. Using large birds, the Hyuga can bypass our blockades. Aside from specific ninjutsu, most long-distance attacks won't reach those altitudes. They already conducted one such operation twelve days ago, but it was a small delivery."
Gen stroked his chin thoughtfully, analyzing the situation. "Why not eliminate the Yohara clan outright? Isn't that the usual Uchiha approach? Are they too strong?"
Madara smirked bitterly. "Not strong, just far away. With the clan already engaged on two fronts, we lack the manpower to start another war."
"What about the Hyuga operatives? Do we have details on their strength? That should be clear, right?" Gen asked.
"The strongest among them is a peak Jōnin, accompanied by three Elite Jōnin and seven regular Jōnin scattered across the region," Madara said calmly.
Gen furrowed his brow. "How are we certain this southern operative is merely a Jōnin? What if it's an Elite Jōnin or even the peak Jōnin? That would make things difficult for us."
Madara reassured him, "The peak Jōnin's whereabouts are already under surveillance, and the clan has dispatched a peak Jōnin to intercept them. Of the three Elite Jōnin, two have been located, and the last is suspected to be in Senju territory. The chances of the southern operative being just a Jōnin are over 80%."
Gen gave him a sidelong glance. The level of preparation showed Madara was determined to complete this mission.
Since Madara had gone to such lengths and it wasn't a battlefield assignment, Gen decided to relent. Handing the mission paper back, he asked, "So, what's your plan?"
Madara tucked the mission paper back into his robe, his expression turning sharp. "Simple. I hate over-complicated strategies. We'll go to the target location—Leafwood Village, a subordinate clan of the Chinoike. It's a small clan, with the leader barely at Jōnin level. We'll storm in, investigate thoroughly, and confirm the Hyuga operative's identity. They can't be subtle about acquiring large amounts of food. Once we've identified them, we kill the Hyuga Jōnin and return."
After hearing the plan, Gen was at a loss for words. All he could think was, As expected of Uchiha Madara.
"Hold on," Gen said. "Didn't you just say Leafwood Village is a subordinate clan of the Chinoike? The Chinoike aren't a small clan. I encountered one of their young Jōnin during a previous mission. He was pretty skilled. Are you sure they won't interfere?"
Madara waved dismissively. "They wouldn't dare. We're the two most talented members of the Uchiha's new generation. If they touch us, it would bring calamity upon their clan. Besides, if we move quickly enough, the Chinoike might not even have time to react."
Gen thought it over and realized that despite its simplicity, the plan had a surprisingly high chance of success—provided they moved fast. This made him respect Madara's strategic instincts. No wonder he could later stand as an equal to Senju Hashirama.
At that moment, Gen found himself curious about meeting Hashirama, the man who could overshadow even Madara.
"So, when do we leave?" he asked.
As soon as the words left his mouth, a monotone voice echoed in his mind:
"Ding! Mission triggered: Disrupt the Hyuga clan's food-gathering operation and kill the Hyuga Jōnin. Reward: 10,000 points. Failure will result in point deduction or elimination if insufficient points remain."
Gen's mind exploded with rage. Seriously, system? Could you at least give me a warning before springing these tasks on me? And stop threatening to erase me every time!
The system, of course, remained silent.
"Time is of the essence. Let's move now!" Madara declared, pulling Gen to his feet.
Already resigned to his fate, Gen shouted back, "Xiao Ying! I'll be gone for two days. Watch the house!"
