Chapter 10: Defeated in an Instant
The students' comments reached Hideichi Tanaka's ears, and he couldn't help but tear up.
Just moments ago, he had been worried that Leo might go wild after drinking. When he tried to warn him, he spoke with some hesitation and a quieter voice.
But who could have predicted this? Leo actually heard him and told him to speak up with more confidence.
At this moment, Tanaka wished he could slap himself.
Why did I have to say anything? Look what's happening now! If anything goes wrong because of Obito, I'll never hear the end of it!
On the other side, Obito was fuming.
Looking at Leo's righteous expression, as though he was ready to enforce justice, Obito felt his anger surge.
Are you serious, Leo?
Sure, Obito knew he was considered the worst in the class—Konoha's so-called "tail of the crane."
But at least he followed the ninja's three prohibitions faithfully!
Leo, on the other hand, had been walking around with a bottle of sake since the day he enrolled and had even attacked their teacher once. Yet, this same Leo had the nerve to act like a model student and lecture him?
And to top it off, Leo had been getting closer to Rin lately. That thought alone made Obito's anger explode, overwhelming his reason.
"You bastard! I'm going to fight you!"
Obito grabbed a kunai, his eyes red with rage. Stomping on the ground, he charged at Leo with all his might.
"Hmm?"
Leo turned to see Obito rushing toward him. Calmly, he reached for the hilt of the massive sword strapped to his back, the famed Shusui.
"It's over. Obito's done for," one student muttered.
"Yeah, how could he be so reckless? Doesn't he know what happened to Kakashi?"
The students around them stared in shock.
Obito was only the second person who had dared to challenge Leo with a weapon since he enrolled. The first had been Kakashi, the genius who had already graduated and was the heir to the "Konoha White Fang" sword style.
But even Kakashi, with all his skill, had suffered a humiliating defeat when he provoked Leo.
And Obito? He was just the weakest student in their class. If Kakashi couldn't handle Leo, what chance did Obito have?
Tanaka was panicking, quickly signaling the nearby teachers for help.
"One-Sword Style—"
Leo began to draw his blade, his entire presence locking onto Obito like a predator eyeing its prey.
Obito's rage evaporated, replaced by sheer terror. He felt like he couldn't breathe, as if a beast was staring him down.
"What's happening to me?!" Obito thought, his sanity creeping back in. He looked into Leo's cold eyes and felt his body freeze.
"Lion's Elegy!"
The sharp sound of a blade being unsheathed echoed across the field.
"Swish! Swish! Swish!"
Suddenly, three figures leapt out from the woods surrounding the playground.
One of them, noticeably shorter than the other two, dashed in front of Leo in an instant, gripping his sword hand firmly. The other two grabbed Leo's shoulders to restrain him.
"Hah... We made it just in time," Tanaka sighed in relief as he saw the three figures.
"That's enough, Leo," said the shorter figure coolly.
"Kakashi?"
The students' eyes widened as they recognized the familiar face of their senior.
Leo, however, grinned mischievously. "You can't stop me from cutting down someone I've decided to cut."
"Pfft!!"
A strange, sharp sound came from behind, and Kakashi's eyes widened in shock.
"Pfft!!"
The harsh sound echoed again from behind, making Kakashi freeze in place.
Kakashi was too familiar with that sound—the unmistakable sound of a sharp blade slashing against human flesh.
At this time, Kakashi wasn't yet the legendary Copy Ninja of the future.
"Aaagh!!"
Obito's scream rang out at the same time.
"Leo, you bastard!"
Kakashi turned around in fury, his head snapping toward Obito. But as soon as he saw the scene in front of him, his anger froze.
"Uhh..."
Standing there, Obito was a mess. His entire body was stripped bare except for a single piece of cloth hanging over his lower half. All his other clothes had been shredded into rags.
There was only a small cut on his hand, from which a tiny trickle of blood oozed.
"Stop yelling and put on some clothes already!" Kakashi snapped, annoyed at Obito's overreaction.
It's pathetic to scream like that over such a small wound, he thought.
From the state of Obito's shredded clothes and minor injury, it was clear that Leo hadn't intended to hurt him seriously. If he had, Obito wouldn't still be standing.
Kakashi sighed in frustration. I've been played by Leo again.
"Clothes?"
Obito glanced down at himself, confused.
"AAAAH!!"
Realizing his state, Obito let out a louder scream, his hands flying to cover himself. His face flushed red as he bolted out of sight, shouting in embarrassment.
"This idiot..."
Hideichi Tanaka, observing the scene, covered his forehead. But deep down, he felt relieved. At least nothing catastrophic had happened.
Looking at Leo, Tanaka's opinion of him shifted slightly.
Maybe he's not just a drunken lunatic swinging his sword randomly...
Ding!
The mechanical voice of the system echoed in Leo's mind.
"After the host used swordsmanship to disgrace an important figure, Swordmanship Comprehension +100!"
"Reward: Voice of All Things (Steel-Slashing Realm)!"
(TL: Kendo > Swordmanship: I will now change the word kendo.)
Leo's slightly drunk mind reeled for a moment.
"+100? Wait... who did I just cut?"
His thoughts swirled. That kid said his name was... Riku Obanai?
Leo frowned. Was that guy really an important figure?
After pondering for all of two seconds, his slightly tipsy brain gave up.
"Eh, forget it. My brain's not working well lately. I'll just drink two more cups to fix it."
Leo muttered, reaching for his sake gourd.
The ninja restraining Leo twitched at his words.
Drinking to improve brain function?
Even in his entire life, Uchiha Shisui had never heard anything so absurd.
Shisui, a renowned genius of the Uchiha clan and Sharingan user, was part of the mission team under direct orders from the Third Hokage.
Accompanying him were another ANBU operative and Kakashi, who had insisted on joining the mission.
As a Sharingan user, Shisui's visual perception far surpassed that of ordinary ninjas. Yet, to his disbelief, he couldn't track the path of Leo's blade at all.
How is this even possible?
"To think someone could reach such mastery of the Sword Draw Technique. Leo truly lives up to his reputation as one of Konoha's most gifted geniuses since the Ninja Academy's founding."
(TL: laijutsu - Sword Draw Technique = Iaijutsu (居合術) is a combative quick-draw sword technique.)
Shisui's thoughts raced, but Leo paid no attention.
Instead, Leo was already rummaging for his sake, muttering to himself, "Time to drink up and get smarter!"
