Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Team Assignments—Who Will Be in Yagyu’s Group?
After Yagyu and his classmates completed their profile photos, the school gates were crowded with parents waiting to pick up their children.
Some students, proudly clutching their new ninja headbands, received words of praise from their parents. Others, who had failed the graduation exam, cried in their parents' arms, receiving either comfort or scolding.
As in the original story, Naruto sat on the swing, head hung low, looking utterly dejected after failing the exam.
Many people noticed Naruto, their gazes filled with hatred or disdain before turning away. Parents whispered to each other in hushed, judgmental tones.
Yagyu also noticed Naruto, but he chose not to comfort him.
Though Naruto seemed pitiful now, Yagyu knew the tide would turn for him after this very day. While Naruto would begin his rise, Sasuke Uchiha's struggles were just beginning.
After parting ways with Hinata, Ino, and Sakura, Yagyu returned home.
Following dinner and a bath, he lay on a couch on his balcony, gazing up at the starlit sky and the bright, suspended moon.
Occasionally, dark shadows flickered across the night sky, passing rooftops at high speed.
Normally, it wasn't unusual to see patrolling ninjas using the rooftops for swift movement, but tonight, the number of figures was several times higher than usual.
What stood out was that each of these ninjas wore the green flak jacket of the Chunin or higher rank. They appeared to be searching for something—or someone.
Yagyu knew exactly what was happening: they were searching for Naruto.
By now, Naruto was likely studying—or had already mastered—the Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu.
Like the Rasengan, this A-rank forbidden technique would become one of Naruto's signature moves.
Shadow Clones. Rasengan. Sage Mode. Naruto didn't have the plethora of flashy techniques that Sasuke wielded, but with his Sage Body and the power of the Nine-Tails as "nuclear reactors," few could withstand the combined force of his three signature moves.
Yagyu was deeply envious of the Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu.
While his own Shadow Clone Jutsu allowed him to create a large number of clones, doing so required significant time and effort. Creating hundreds—or even thousands—of clones at once was beyond its limits.
The Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu, on the other hand, relied on vast chakra reserves to create massive numbers of clones in one go. Developed by Tobirama Senju, this jutsu was tailor-made for those with the Sage Body.
Despite his envy, Yagyu refrained from interfering in the unfolding events.
As an observer, he understood the bigger picture.
The Hokage Building, as Konoha's most important site, was undoubtedly under constant watch by the ANBU. The Scroll of Seals was far too critical to be left unguarded.
Naruto successfully obtaining the scroll was only possible because Hiruzen Sarutobi allowed it. The Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu was Sarutobi's way of compensating the "Hero's Child" and providing him with a technique perfectly suited to his capabilities.
If Naruto stole and learned the jutsu, he'd get a pass. If Yagyu tried the same, he'd likely end up in the Torture and Interrogation Department for a lengthy "chat" once the incident concluded.
And so, Yagyu had no intention of getting involved.
After stargazing for a while, Yagyu went to bed.
The next morning, Yagyu completed his morning routine, tied his ninja headband around his arm, ate breakfast, and set off for the academy.
Since the school was technically on break, only students who had passed the graduation exam were attending. As a result, the school grounds were unusually quiet.
Still, along the way, Yagyu ran into several headband-wearing classmates, exchanging greetings with both his own classmates and those from other classes.
"Yagyu, good morning!"
Arriving at the classroom, he found that Hinata, Ino, and Sakura were, as usual, already there.
No matter the occasion, these three girls were always together—a combination that had become famous within the academy.
Their companionship also served as a buffer for Yagyu, shielding him from the throngs of fangirls who idolized him. Thanks to them, Yagyu didn't have to endure being mobbed like Sasuke often was.
However, their exclusivity had earned the trio the disdain of many female students at the academy, leading to their social isolation.
Fortunately, their consistently strong academic performance—they were all ranked in the top ten of their year—kept them out of trouble. Otherwise, they might have faced retaliation from rival cliques.
After greeting Yagyu, Ino propped her chin on her hands, her expression filled with anticipation. "We're about to be assigned to teams. I wonder if we'll get to be in the same group as you, Yagyu."
Sakura and Hinata also looked at him expectantly.
Before Yagyu could reply, Shikamaru, resting his head on one hand, let out a yawn and said lazily, "Hinata and Sakura might have a chance, but not you, Ino."
"Why not?" Ino demanded.
"Simple—because of our parents' reputations," Shikamaru explained. "If Choji, you, and I were missing even one member, you might have a shot."
"But we're all the same age, so it's predetermined. No matter how well we score, we'll always be grouped together upon graduation."
"Our jonin leader won't be an ordinary jonin, either. Their mission will be to mold us into the next generation of the Ino-Shika-Cho trio."
"That's so unfair!" Ino groaned, clutching her head in frustration. "So my fate was decided the moment I started school?"
"Actually, it was set the moment we were born," Shikamaru added, delivering the final blow.
Intrigued, Yagyu asked, "Shikamaru, can you guess who'll be on my team?"
"Funny you should ask," Shikamaru replied, now fully engaged. "I've thought about it. Odds are, you'll end up with either Sakura or Hinata."
"Why's that?" Ino asked eagerly, while Sakura and Hinata exchanged hopeful looks.
"You four have been inseparable for years," Shikamaru began. "Your teamwork is already miles ahead of anyone else's. Yagyu is a versatile all-rounder, and you three are more support-oriented. Considering the synergy you've already developed, Hinata and Sakura both have high chances of being placed in Yagyu's team—just not you, Ino."
Hearing this, Sakura and Hinata's faces lit up with delight.
Sakura couldn't help but press further. "Shikamaru, between Hinata and me, who do you think has the better chance?"
"You, Sakura."
Pointing to her, Shikamaru explained, "Just like the Ino-Shika-Cho trio, many students from prominent clans are likely to be grouped based on their specialties."
"This allows the village to conserve resources by assigning a single, highly capable jonin to oversee each team."
"Hinata's Kekkei Genkai is the Byakugan, a legendary sensory ability. If I'm right, the most fitting teammates for Hinata would be Kiba from the Inuzuka Clan and Shino from the Aburame Clan. Together, they'd form the new Sensory Team."
At this, Hinata's excitement dimmed, replaced by disappointment.
Sakura, on the other hand, beamed with barely contained joy, her radiant smile a stark contrast to her two friends' more subdued expressions.
Fortunately, under Yagyu's influence, their bond had grown strong over the years. In the original story, their friendships might have been fragile, but now they were solid enough to prevent conflicts.
"Impressive as always, Shikamaru," Yagyu said, clapping his hands in genuine admiration. "You've definitely inherited the Nara clan's sharp intellect."
