Chapter 156: Chapter 156
Satoru stood beneath the shade of the trees, the dappled sunlight illuminating his features and adding a mysterious hue to his pale blue eyes. Those eyes calmly fixed on Uchiha Itachi, as if peering straight into his soul.
He spoke with a calm, unhurried tone.
"Are you pleased that you successfully passed the Akatsuki's secrets to Konoha?"
"Happy that you saved Sasuke's life back then?"
"Or maybe it's the 'brothers' war' you're planning for? The grand eye-opening scheme?"
As the words hung in the air, Itachi's composed facade cracked. His pupils contracted to pinpoints, his face a mask of shock.
How did Satoru know?
This was a secret he had buried deep, known only to a select few: the masked man claiming to be Madara, Danzo, and perhaps the Third Hokage, though the latter only had fragments of the truth.
Itachi's mind raced. The eye-transplant plan, his hidden agenda to save Sasuke from the curse of blindness while ensuring the Uchiha clan's legacy, was something he had shared with no one. How could Satoru possibly know?
For years, Itachi had meticulously orchestrated everything, from Sasuke's survival to his growth, even going as far as becoming a villain in his eyes. His ultimate goal was to ensure Sasuke's awakening of the Mangekyo Sharingan through their eventual confrontation.
Yet, here was Satoru, casually dismantling every layer of Itachi's secrets as if reading a book.
"You know everything?"
Itachi's voice was low, filled with a rare note of uncertainty.
Satoru tilted his head, a playful glint in his eyes.
"Everything worth knowing," he replied with a sly grin. "The things you think you're hiding? They're as clear as day."
He leaned casually against a tree, exuding an air of nonchalance.
For a moment, Itachi struggled to respond. There were countless questions he wanted to ask. How had Satoru survived the massacre? What had he been doing all these years? Where had he taken Sasuke?
Yet, none of those questions escaped his lips. Instead, he asked calmly, "Where is Sasuke?"
Satoru's grin widened.
"A perfect world," he said cryptically.
Itachi's brows furrowed.
"You're still clinging to that plan of yours?" Satoru asked, his voice tinged with mockery.
"This is the last thing I can do for Sasuke," Itachi replied evenly. "Think of it as a gift."
Satoru scoffed.
"A gift? Sounds more like a curse wrapped in self-righteousness. Ever think of giving him a choice?"
Itachi's eyes narrowed.
"No ninja can accept the thought of losing their power, their purpose," he said. "I'm doing what's best for him."
Satoru shook his head, his expression darkening.
"Best for him? Or best for your conscience?"
"You can't decide someone's life for them, Itachi. Painful choices are part of growing up. You don't get to play god just because you think you're smarter."
The tension in the air grew heavier.
"So self-righteous..."
Satoru's tone was mocking now. He flexed his wrist and cracked his knuckles, his pale blue eyes glowing faintly.
"Even fathers know better than to read their kids' diaries. You, on the other hand, want to rewrite Sasuke's entire life. That's not love. That's control."
Itachi's expression faltered slightly at Satoru's sharp words.
"You've already hurt him enough. Now you want to chain him to your twisted sense of duty? How noble of you."
Satoru's voice dripped with sarcasm, but his fists clenched tightly, his knuckles white.
Itachi remained silent.
"Still no answer?" Satoru's voice softened into a mocking sing-song. "Guess I'll have to beat some sense into you."
Without warning, he vanished, reappearing in front of Itachi in the blink of an eye.
"Bang!"
Satoru's fist connected squarely with Itachi's jaw, sending him flying into the trees. The impact was so intense that the surrounding roots cracked, and the forest floor shook.
Dust and debris filled the air as Itachi wiped a trickle of blood from the corner of his mouth.
Itachi's Sharingan spun as he tried to analyze Satoru's movements.
"That speed..."
It was unlike anything he had seen before. Even with the Sharingan's heightened perception, he could barely keep up with Satoru's attacks.
Itachi launched forward, his kunai aimed at Satoru's flank.
"Too slow," Satoru said, his voice cutting through the air like a blade.
Before Itachi could react, Satoru disappeared again, reappearing behind him with a smirk.
"You're holding back, aren't you?"
"Or maybe you're just this weak now."
"You're unbelievable."
Itachi's voice was calm, but his expression betrayed a mix of frustration and resignation.
Satoru chuckled.
"And you're predictable."
He vanished once more, appearing just inches from Itachi's face. This time, he didn't strike. Instead, he whispered, his tone icy.
"If you really cared about Sasuke, you'd stop treating him like a pawn."
Itachi flinched ever so slightly, his eyes widening.
"Because if you don't, I will."
With that, Satoru raised his fist again, and the forest erupted in chaos. Trees fell, debris flew, and the air grew thick with tension as the two Uchiha clashed, their ideals and powers colliding in a whirlwind of force.
For the first time in years, Itachi felt something he had long buried.
Doubt.
