Chapter 81: Chapter 81: Heroes Always Arrive Late
"Kakashi! Rin!"
"Are you two okay?"
Obito shouted into the thick mist, but no response came back.
The screams in the distance had gradually faded, leaving the atmosphere suffocatingly tense.
"Damn it! Come out and face me!"
Obito roared, his grip tightening around the kunai in his hands, though they began to tremble uncontrollably. The looming sense of death made his body start to falter.
On another side of the battlefield, Kakashi was locked in a fierce battle with a Kirigakure ninja. He knew that if he wanted to defeat his opponent, he couldn't allow them to disappear into the mist again.
"You're not bad, kid," the enemy sneered. "I just hope your teammates are as strong as you.
Otherwise, they're probably already taken care of by my comrades."
Hearing the taunt, Kakashi's heart wavered. He knew it was a ploy to disrupt his focus, but the mention of two additional enemies filled him with dread.
Could Obito and Rin handle this?
No, more importantly...
Are they even still alive?
"You've slipped up, kid."
The flash of a blade cut into Kakashi's arm, leaving a deep gash. Seizing the opportunity, the Kirigakure ninja vanished into the mist again.
Rin pressed her back tightly against the supply cart, clutching a kunai in trembling hands. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears, and the oppressive atmosphere made her feel as if her chest might burst.
Combat had never been her strength, and now, she couldn't even pinpoint the enemy's location. A single thought consumed her mind.
I'm going to die.
Just then, a dozen shuriken emerged from the mist. Rin tried to evade, but she wasn't fast enough; a few struck her leg, abdomen, and arm.
"Damn it!"
Rin struggled to her feet, despair filling her gaze. The shuriken had been cloaked by the mist, making them nearly impossible to detect until it was too late. Blood flowed freely from her wounds, but as a medic-nin, she knew using the Mystical Palm Technique now would only make her a sitting target.
As her strength faded and her vision dimmed, her knees wobbled.
That's when the Kirigakure ninja, hidden all this time, launched his attack. His blade gleamed coldly as it arced toward Rin's neck.
"Is this... the end?" Rin whispered, her voice trembling. She didn't even have the energy to dodge.
The blade drew closer, and Rin could see the twisted smile on the enemy's face.
But before it could reach her—
Chidori!
A sound like a thousand chirping birds shattered the silence, and a figure appeared in front of Rin, moving faster than her eyes could track. Lightning illuminated the boy's sharp features.
Her mouth fell open in shock. "Mirai—"
Before she could finish her sentence, the boy was gone, and the Kirigakure ninja collapsed to the ground, clutching his slashed throat, spasming briefly before going still.
Rin sank to her knees, her breath quick and uneven.
She was safe, but her heartbeat pounded even harder than before.
Seconds later, a powerful gale swept through the battlefield.
"Wind Release!"
The mist was blown away in an instant, revealing the carnage around them. Sunlight poured in, illuminating the gruesome scene.
Rin's eyes widened in horror. Bodies lay scattered across the ground, eyes open in terror, as if still cursing their fate.
Shaking off her shock, she crawled to check the corpses for signs of life but sighed in resignation.
"Nothing... I can't save them."
Not far away, Mirai twisted the neck of the last Kirigakure ninja with practiced ease. A faint smile tugged at his lips.
"Sorry I'm late," he said, turning to the others. "But hey, heroes always arrive a bit late."
Kakashi walked over, his gaze filled with gratitude. "Mirai, you've saved us again."
He glanced at the elite Kirigakure jonin on the ground, the one who had nearly overpowered him earlier. That enemy hadn't lasted even a second against Mirai.
Just how strong has he become? Kakashi wondered.
"Rin!" Obito scrambled to his feet, rushing to her side the moment he spotted her.
Seeing her injuries, his fists clenched in fury. "Those damn Kirigakure bastards!"
"I'm fine, Obito," Rin reassured him softly before limping toward Mirai.
"Thank you, Mirai. If it weren't for you..." Her voice trailed off, and a shudder ran through her body.
Had Mirai been even a second later, she wouldn't have survived.
"It's nothing," Mirai replied with a casual smile. "Let me take care of your injuries."
He placed a hand on her leg, and a soothing green light enveloped her wounds.
"Whoa! You can use medical ninjutsu too?" Rin exclaimed, amazed.
Mirai's technique was leagues ahead of hers.
"It never hurts to pick up a few extra skills," Mirai replied lightly, earning a confused glance from Kakashi.
Hold on. That's not what you told me when I asked you to teach me.
Meanwhile, Obito gritted his teeth so hard it was a wonder they didn't crack.
Damn it! If only I'd learned medical ninjutsu too...
"Hey, Obito, your eyes..." Rin's surprised voice broke through his thoughts.
"Huh?" Obito rubbed his eyes in confusion. "What's wrong with them?"
Rin pulled out a small mirror from her pouch and handed it to him. "See for yourself."
His eyes widened as he looked at his reflection.
"I... I awakened my Sharingan!" he exclaimed, laughing triumphantly. "Finally! Just you wait! It won't be long before I surpass both of you!"
Kakashi rolled his eyes. "Idiot."
Mirai raised an eyebrow, his tone dripping with mock sincerity. "Wow, a single tomoe Sharingan. Impressive~"
"Why don't you take a look at mine?" Mirai's eyes transformed into a pair of Mangekyō Sharingan, brimming with a terrifying intensity.
Obito's laughter froze. "Y-you bastard! Are you showing off?!"
"Absolutely," Mirai replied with a smirk. "Jealous?"
Obito's yell echoed through the clearing. "YOU'RE UNBELIEVABLE!"
"Quiet," Mirai muttered, placing a hand on Rin's abdomen to heal her final wound. "Don't disturb me while I'm treating Rin."
Obito's face turned red as he watched. He clenched his fists so hard that they shook.
I swear, one day I'll kill this guy!
