Chapter 7: 7. A Storm's Greeting
Zen Zoldyak stood still, the charged air around him crackling faintly as he contemplated his next move. Sensing the powerful presence of the stranger hidden nearby, he let out a deep breath, making his decision. Slowly, he stepped forward, raising his hands in a gesture of peace. His fingertips sparked faintly with controlled lightning as he pressed them together in front of his chest and bowed slightly.
Ken and Erumi mirrored his actions, their movements fluid and precise, a testament to their clan's discipline. This was the Zoldyak Clan's way—a greeting of respect and controlled strength, signaling both peace and capability.
Hachiro Senju watched from his concealed position, his sharp eyes narrowing as he observed the ritual. The bow wasn't one of submission; it was deliberate, calculated, and carried an air of quiet confidence. These aren't rogue shinobi, he thought. This is a disciplined, well-trained clan.
Zen straightened, his voice calm but carrying an edge of pride. "We are aware of your presence. Come forward, stranger. There's no need to hide."
Hachiro hesitated, weighing his options. His mind flashed to Tobirama's teachings: Caution at all times. Observe. Gather information. Knowledge is the key to strength. Finally, deciding there was little point in remaining hidden, he stepped out from the shadows, his posture relaxed but his guard firmly in place.
Zen's sharp eyes studied him, noting his attire and the faint chakra lingering around him from his previous mission. "You're not just any shinobi," Zen said thoughtfully. "Your power level is higher than most. And yet…" His gaze swept over Hachiro, taking in subtle details—the quality of his armor, the faint crest partially obscured on his uniform, and even his stance.
"You're returning from a mission," Zen continued, "but you're no ordinary wandering ninja. The way you carry yourself, the balance of your chakra... I'd say you belong to one of the major clans."
Hachiro raised an eyebrow, feigning indifference. "What makes you so sure?"
Zen smiled faintly, his tone matter-of-fact. "I analyze things. It's part of who I am. Your power eliminates smaller clans. Your uniform and refined speech patterns suggest an upbringing in a prominent clan." He began listing off possibilities. "You're not Uchiha—their chakra feels different, more volatile. Not Hyūga either; they rarely stray far from their own affairs. Sarutobi? No, they wouldn't allow themselves to be seen so easily. That leaves the Senju."
Hachiro stiffened imperceptibly for a fraction of a second, but it was enough.
Zen's smile widened slightly. "Got it."
Hachiro tried to recover, his tone casual. "You're assuming too much. I could be anyone."
"Perhaps," Zen replied, unconvinced. "But your reaction tells me otherwise."
Ken and Erumi exchanged glances, their postures relaxing as Zen handled the situation. Meanwhile, Hachiro's mind raced. This Zen… he's sharp. Dangerous. And this clan… they remind me of my own. Disciplined, resourceful, and confident. Who are these people?
Zen folded his arms, his expression turning serious. "You're from the Senju Clan, aren't you? One of the most prominent clans of this era. Your presence here makes sense—you were bound to notice us eventually."
Hachiro didn't respond directly but admired Zen's deductions silently. Tobirama would respect this level of analysis. And Hashirama… well, he'd probably be trying to befriend them already.
Zen took a step forward, his voice steady. "I won't waste your time. My name is Zen Zoldyak. These are my clanmates, Ken and Erumi. We are members of the Zoldyak Clan, a small but powerful clan that has remained hidden for generations. We value our independence and strength, but we are not adversaries. We understand the need for alliances in these turbulent times."
Hachiro listened carefully, noting every word. They're cautious but clearly capable. Their slogan… 'Honor the Thunder Within'… it's a clear message to anyone who might underestimate them.
Zen gestured toward the distant village. "If the Senju Clan wishes to know more about us, there is a way. Go to the head of Mirai Village—the village you were in earlier. Tell him our clan slogan, and he will notify us. We will decide when and how to meet. Until then, we remain as we are."
The implicit warning wasn't lost on Hachiro. They've been hidden for so long. If they're revealing themselves now, they must have a reason.
Zen stepped back, his posture calm but firm. "You may leave in peace. But know this—we respect the strength of the Senju Clan. We hope you'll respect ours in return."
Hachiro nodded slowly, his mind already turning to how he would relay this information to Tobirama and Hashirama. As he disappeared into the trees, his thoughts were a whirlwind. A clan like this could be an invaluable ally—or a dangerous adversary.
Zen watched him go, his sharp gaze lingering on the direction Hachiro had taken. He turned to Ken and Erumi. "It's time for us to decide. The storm is no longer just on the horizon—it's here."
The three Zoldyaks disappeared into the forest, their presence vanishing like a crackle of fading lightning.
Hachiro made his way back toward the Senju compound, his thoughts heavy. How will Hashirama and Tobirama react to this? This Zoldyak Clan… they could change everything.
