Chapter 46: Chapter 46: Uchiha Itachi's Crisis
Whether Gaara could have a better life in Konohagakure was a question for another time.
After Kakashi Hatake led the last group of Konoha shinobi transporting the spoils of war back to the village, the highest council of Sunagakure convened in the council chamber. Presided over by Counsellors Chiyo, they deliberated over who should become the Fifth Kazekage.
One candidate after another was proposed, only to be rejected shortly after.
Finally, Chiyo broke the deadlock with a decisive proposal:
"I nominate Temari as the Fifth Kazekage!"
Her words were firm, leaving no room for dissent. "She's Rasa's daughter and already possesses the strength of a high-ranking chunin. With proper training and experience, she could grow into the role. She has the potential."
Chiyo's gaze was resolute, her tone leaving no room for debate. She had made up her mind.
Among the few individuals in Sunagakure who could assume the title of Kazekage, Temari was the most suitable in terms of identity and circumstances. While her strength wasn't impressive—she wasn't even a jonin—Chiyo believed that was of little consequence.
After all, Temari wasn't being chosen to lead Sunagakure but to serve as a figurehead.
The defeated Sunagakure needed a scapegoat. The villagers, burdened with the reparations to Konohagakure, harbored deep resentment toward the leadership. They needed someone to take the blame. Temari, young and inexperienced, was the perfect candidate—easily controlled and unlikely to resist.
Right now, Sunagakure needed time to recover. Who held the title of Kazekage was of secondary importance.
In her heart, Chiyo nurtured a daring plan. She would find her grandson, Sasori of the Red Sand.
Chiyo had heard rumors that Sasori had joined an organization of rogue shinobi. Knowing her grandson's pride, she could only imagine how powerful the group must be to win him over.
Sunagakure had nearly been destroyed under her watch, and Chiyo was consumed by the desire for revenge. She dreamed of facing Tobirama Senju in battle and exacting her vengeance on Konoha—even at the cost of her life.
The war between Sunagakure and Konohagakure ended in just seven days with Konoha's overwhelming victory.
Sunagakure not only had to pay 20 billion ryo in reparations but also had to accept the presence of Konoha's troops stationed within the Land of Wind.
According to merchants traveling through the Land of Wind, Konoha's ninja began occupying key locations only a day after Sunagakure signed the surrender agreement. Some even reported seeing Konoha shinobi stationed outside the daimyo's residence.
It was clear to everyone in the shinobi world: Sunagakure had suffered a crushing defeat. Their sovereignty within their own borders was no longer guaranteed.
The implications sent shockwaves through the ninja world.
Onoki, the Tsuchikage, regretted his earlier harsh terms when Chiyo had sought aid from Iwagakure. He now sensed a looming crisis.
If Konoha could decimate Sunagakure in a mere week, what was stopping them from defeating other villages just as easily?
The resurrection of Tobirama Senju had already bolstered Konoha with a powerful combat asset. Combined with their now-demonstrated military strength, it seemed inevitable that Konoha was moving toward unifying the ninja world under its rule.
The most troubling aspect for the other villages was that, following Sunagakure's defeat, Tobirama had not only demanded financial reparations but had also seized Sunagakure's jinchūriki.
This act sent waves of unease through the remaining villages.
The distribution of tailed beasts had been decided by Hashirama Senju himself. Why, then, was Tobirama now claiming them? If he had taken Shukaku, would the other bijū be next?
Villages such as Takigakure and Kirigakure, with weaker military power, were particularly on edge.
Kirigakure had only recently stabilized after years of internal strife. Under the Fourth Mizukage, Yagura, many bloodline clans had been wiped out. Though Fifth Mizukage Mei Terumi had managed to restore some semblance of order, the scars remained.
Mei suspected that Yagura had been manipulated by the Uchiha clan's Sharingan. While she lacked evidence to implicate Konoha directly, the mere possibility made her wary of Konoha's intentions.
If Konoha made another move, the Fourth Great Ninja War might not be far off. But this time, it would be a war of all the villages against Konoha.
Meanwhile, in the shadows of the ninja world, an event of great significance unfolded.
In a remote area of the Land of Rain, a small group of individuals stood facing each other in the drizzle.
On one side stood Orochimaru and Kabuto Yakushi. Orochimaru's appearance was unusually feminine, clad in a kimono that emphasized his striking and eerie beauty.
Opposing them were three figures: Sasori, Konan, and Pain.
"Sasori, I didn't expect you to break free from my control so easily," Orochimaru said, a sly smile playing on his lips.
Sasori's puppet, Hiruko, emitted a raspy voice in reply, "Orochimaru, you've always underestimated me."
Orochimaru's tongue flicked out as he chuckled softly. "Sasori, your temper hasn't changed at all."
He then turned his gaze to Pain, his eyes gleaming with a mix of curiosity and greed as they lingered on the Rinnegan. Though tempted, Orochimaru knew he wasn't strong enough to take on Pain—not even with his new body and its Crystal Release bloodline.
For now, Orochimaru's ambition was focused on another target: Itachi Uchiha's Mangekyō Sharingan.
Pain, noticing Orochimaru's calculating gaze, furrowed his brow. Controlling his Deva Path, he spoke coldly:
"Orochimaru, you contacted us. What's your purpose? If you don't satisfy me, I'll kill you where you stand."
Orochimaru's lips curled into a sinister smile. "The Akatsuki's plans will fail as long as Konoha stands. Tobirama Senju must be destroyed, or Konoha must fall."
The Akatsuki members frowned at his words. Then Orochimaru added with a smirk,
"Perhaps you don't know yet...
"Uchiha Itachi is a Konoha spy planted within the Akatsuki."
