Chapter 96: 96. The Last Stand 3
As the dust finally settled from the battle, the tension in the air eased ever so slightly. The Hidden Mist shinobi, who had fought bravely alongside the three, began to tend to the wounded, their faces a mix of relief and exhaustion. For now, they had succeeded, but it was clear to everyone present that this victory was only temporary.
Naruto wiped the sweat from his brow, his usually bright eyes shadowed with concern. He looked to Sasuke and Anon, who stood beside him, their expressions equally serious. The rift had been closed, but something felt off—like the battle they had just fought was only a precursor to something far worse.
Mei Terumi, the Mizukage, walked over to them, her green eyes scanning the battlefield, her lips pressed into a thin line. "I don't understand," she began, her voice low but laced with a note of frustration. "These rifts—they don't make sense. Why now? What is causing them?"
Anon, ever calm in the face of chaos, stepped forward. His voice was measured, and his Void energy flickered around him faintly as he spoke. "They're not random. Every rift we've encountered has been strategically placed near powerful sources of energy. These convergence points are being used to draw in more power from across dimensions, merging realities into one chaotic space."
Sasuke crossed his arms, his eyes flickering with the glow of his Sharingan. "The real question is who or what is controlling them. The enemies coming through these rifts are getting stronger with every battle. We need to find the source—and fast."
Mei nodded, though her brow furrowed as she contemplated their next move. "If you can locate the source, we'll mobilize our forces to help. But it's not going to be easy. These enemies, they don't fight like any shinobi we've faced before. They're ruthless and unpredictable."
Naruto, always the optimist despite the weight of the world on his shoulders, grinned as he cracked his knuckles. "Unpredictable or not, we're going to take them down. We've gotten stronger, too. And with all the villages working together, there's no way we're losing."
Sasuke didn't say anything, but the flicker in his eyes told Naruto that he agreed. There was no room for doubt now. They had fought too hard to lose their world to these invaders.
Anon, still deep in thought, seemed to zone out for a moment. His connection to the Void made him acutely aware of every shift in energy, and something about the air still felt… off. Despite their victory, there was an underlying tension—a sense that they were only scratching the surface of the true threat.
"There's more," Anon said quietly, almost to himself. "This wasn't their full force. They were testing us—seeing how we respond to these rifts. The next attack will be bigger, stronger, and more coordinated."
Naruto's smile faded slightly, but his resolve didn't waver. "Then we'll hit them back harder. No matter what comes through that next rift, we're going to close it. We'll protect our villages."
Just as they were about to discuss their next steps, a figure appeared in the distance, moving quickly toward them. It was one of the Hidden Mist shinobi, his face pale and his movements urgent.
"Mizukage-sama!" the shinobi called out, his voice breathless. "We've received word—another rift has opened near the Land of Lightning. It's even larger than this one."
The news hit like a punch to the gut. Naruto's fists clenched, his knuckles white. "Another rift? Already?"
Sasuke's expression darkened. "They're moving faster than we thought. We don't have time to rest."
Mei nodded, her eyes narrowing as she considered the implications. "The Raikage will need our help. If this rift is larger, it could be the key to finding out where they're coming from."
Anon's eyes gleamed faintly with Void energy. "We need to go now. The longer we wait, the more dangerous this becomes."
Naruto stepped forward, his usual determination blazing in his eyes. "Then let's get moving. We'll close this rift, and then we'll find the source of these attacks. It's time to end this."
The Journey to the Land of Lightning
It wasn't long before the team was on the move again, heading toward the Land of Lightning where the next rift had opened. Minato had teleported back to the Leaf Village to rally more forces and prepare for the worst, leaving Naruto, Sasuke, and Anon to lead the charge alongside the Hidden Mist and Hidden Cloud forces.
The landscape around them was treacherous, the mountainous region of the Land of Lightning making travel difficult. But the urgency of the situation drove them forward. The sky above was darkening once again, a telltale sign that the convergence was growing stronger.
As they approached the rift, the tension in the air grew palpable. The dark energy from the tear in the sky twisted the clouds, turning the horizon into a swirling vortex of chaos. From the distance, they could already see the rift's influence spreading—trees warped and twisted, the ground itself shifting unnaturally as the convergence pulled at the fabric of reality.
Naruto's gaze hardened as they drew closer. "We need to close this rift fast, before it spreads any further."
Sasuke's Sharingan was active, scanning the battlefield. "There are already enemies pouring through. We'll need to split up and take them out before we can even get close to the rift."
Anon, as always, remained calm. "I'll handle the rift itself. You two clear a path. We can't afford to let any of these enemies escape."
The ground shook beneath them as they neared the convergence point, and Naruto could see the figures emerging from the rift—dark, twisted forms similar to those they had fought before, but stronger, more vicious.
"Alright, let's go!" Naruto shouted as he charged forward, forming a massive Rasengan in his hand, ready to unleash it on the first wave of enemies.
Sasuke followed close behind, his Chidori crackling with Void energy as he prepared to strike.
The battle for the Land of Lightning had begun.
