Chapter 24 - Crisis
The shocking scene immediately filled Shen Qiu’s eyes; as he looked out, he saw a landscape of broken buildings, each with its own unique style.
The entire city was desolate, so desolate that it sent chills down his spine.
Looking at this endless, ruined city, Shen Qiu felt as if he was touching the scars of history.
He could easily imagine how prosperous this city must have been before its downfall.
Seeing this, Shen Qiu grew even more curious about what this world had gone through.
And one more thing: why was he here, and where exactly was this place?
He stood by the window, lost in thought.
From the information he had gathered so far, he could conclude that the level of civilization in this world was significantly higher than that of his own, and it seemed to have suffered a catastrophic disaster.
Of course, he was unclear about the specifics of that disaster.
As for whether there were any surviving natives in this world, he had no idea!
However, Shen Qiu was certain that it was very dangerous here, though danger often accompanied opportunity.
There were valuable resources everywhere; every item could be considered a priceless treasure in their original world.
As for where he was, Shen Qiu had his own speculations. The first possibility was that, for some reason, he was no longer on Blue Star and might be on another planet in the universe.
The second possibility was that some sort of dimensional chaos had caused parallel spaces to intersect, bringing him to this place.
Of course, either theory was quite grim.
Just as Shen Qiu stood at the window, lost in thought, a dull camera in the corner of the room’s ceiling suddenly lit up before dimming again.
At that moment, outside the bank building, the patrolling cleaners near a dozen streets seemed to receive some kind of instruction and all stopped in place.
They turned their heads to look at the distant bank building and then began to encircle it.
Inside the top floor room of the bank building, Shen Qiu withdrew his gaze from the outside and walked towards the door.
He headed for the adjacent room, which was locked.
Shen Qiu took out the remaining keys and tried them one by one. One! Two!
Click!
The door was opened by Shen Qiu.
He pushed the door open and stepped inside, surveying the area.
This room had not suffered any damage; the cabinets were filled with various documents and books.
On the desk, there was a high-end computer embedded in it, and in the corner stood a personal safe.
Shen Qiu walked to the cabinet and pulled out the books, flipping through them one by one. Although he couldn’t understand them, he could determine their usefulness based on the material and some patterns.
It was rare to find a room in such good condition, so it had great exploratory value; Shen Qiu decided to spend some more time searching.
Just as Shen Qiu was patiently rummaging through the room, the cleaners surrounded the bank building, blocking all the exits.
Soon after, one cleaner after another entered the bank building.
At that moment, Shen Qiu was toying with a special chip that was the size of a fingernail and as thin as a piece of paper.
It had densely packed circuits, which he had found inside an inconspicuous book.
Suddenly, a loud crashing sound rang out.
The glass of a sixteen-story building across from the bank building suddenly shattered.
An office chair fell violently to the ground.
At this moment, several cleaners surrounding the bank building suddenly turned, raising their guns and firing at the shattered window, then charging directly towards that building.
Shen Qiu heard the commotion and rushed to the window, first looking towards the opposite building.
He saw a figure dart past the window on the seventh floor.
Shen Qiu quickly lowered his head to look down, where there were cleaners everywhere; the bank building was surrounded.
His lips twitched in frustration, and he dashed out of the room.
His first instinct was to run toward the safe stairway, rushing downstairs as fast as possible.
Bang! Bang!
Shen Qiu’s expression was tense, his eyes constantly shifting.
He couldn’t understand which part of his plan had gone wrong to attract so many cleaners.
He had been very careful, yet he still ended up in trouble.
If the building across from him hadn’t deliberately made noise, he probably would have been caught completely off guard.
Then Shen Qiu quickly thought of ways to escape.
A thought flashed through his mind, and he immediately took off his bulletproof vest and discarded it to increase his speed down the stairs.
At that moment, several cleaners began to ascend the safety stairs, getting closer and closer.
Soon, Shen Qiu reached the 13th floor. He dashed toward the storage room, grabbing a bundle of nylon rope and a pair of gloves before sprinting toward the stairs.
Bang! Bang!
Shen Qiu pushed himself to run down the stairs with all his strength, his heart racing.
However, when he reached the 10th floor, he distinctly heard clattering footsteps coming from below the stairs.
The cleaners were almost there.
A glimmer of determination flashed in Shen Qiu’s eyes. He stopped fleeing downward and instead charged toward the office area on the 10th floor.
He accurately locked onto a movable desk and forcefully pushed it toward the window facing the ruined residential building.
Under the shadow of death, Shen Qiu unleashed tremendous strength, the desk legs scraping against the floor and making a piercing sound.
Bang!
The table crashed against the wall by the window!
Shen Qiu put on his gloves and used brute force to tie one end of the nylon rope to the table before flipping over and climbing onto it.
Clank! Clank!
The footsteps grew closer and closer.
Shen Qiu yanked on the nylon rope and leaped out of the window.
He gripped the nylon rope and slid down at high speed.
The howling wind roared in Shen Qiu’s ears, his facial muscles tense; for someone who had long engaged in extreme sports, high-speed descents felt like second nature.
However, the two cleaners guarding the entrances and exits behind him brought immense pressure to Shen Qiu.
As he slid down rapidly, the two cleaners sensed the commotion and looked up.
They spotted Shen Qiu just as they raised their guns. In that instant, Shen Qiu, holding the nylon rope in one hand, raised his firearm with the other.
Bang! Bang!
The heads of the two cleaners were instantly hit, their skulls exploding as they fell to the ground!
At this moment, Shen Qiu reached the end of the nylon rope, still more than four meters above the ground.
Without a second thought, Shen Qiu released his grip and jumped down, rolling upon landing and quickly getting back on his feet to run!
Just then, a few cleaners emerged from the window, raising their firearms and aiming at the landing Shen Qiu.
Bang!
A barrage of bullets rained down around Shen Qiu on the ground.
Meanwhile, the cleaners stationed at other exits began to encircle him.
Shen Qiu accelerated and dashed into the ruins of the residential area. At that moment, he heard gunfire coming from his right side and couldn’t help but glance over.
There, Tang Kexin was fleeing through the ruins, carrying a medium-sized satchel on her back.
Three cleaners were chasing after her.
Bang, bang, bang!
The three cleaners continued to fire wildly.
Tang Kexin bent low and accelerated her escape, with bullets hitting the walls and debris around her, sending sparks flying.
Despite this, there was not a trace of fear on Tang Kexin’s face; she just kept running at full speed.
In the ruins of the residential area, she constantly turned left and right, leading the cleaners on a chaotic chase.
Soon, Tang Kexin saw a fork in the path ahead. Her eyes sharpened, and she suddenly accelerated, rushing into one of the paths before the cleaners could catch up.
The pursuing cleaners, seeing the two winding paths, split up to continue the chase.
Tang Kexin’s luck was quite good; only one cleaner was still chasing after her.
