Night of the Apocalypse

Chapter 45 - Rescue

City of Clear Skies – Lord’s Mansion.

In a luxurious and elegant room, the walls were adorned with various ancient and famous paintings, and the corners displayed exquisite artworks and antiques.

An elderly man, with a dignified demeanor and a face lined with wrinkles, sporting two small mustaches, was lying in bed fast asleep.

Boom!

Suddenly, a cacophony of noises erupted outside the window, and the old man slowly opened his sharp eyes.

At that moment, a knock was heard at the door.

Knock, knock!

“Come in.”

The old man sat up and spoke in a deep voice.

The tightly closed door was pushed open, revealing a serious-looking female housekeeper in her sixties, dressed in a white shirt and black suit, with her graying hair neatly pinned up. She lowered her head and respectfully reported,
“I apologize, Lord Bai Shao. Administrative Officer Qin Ang has sent an urgent communication.”

“I understand. You may leave.”

Bai Shao waved his hand, signaling the housekeeper to withdraw.

He then got out of bed, raised his hand, and activated the visual interface to connect the call.

Soon, a middle-aged man appeared on the screen, dressed in a sky-blue administrative officer’s uniform. His deep-set eyes and defined features exuded charisma.

“Administrative Officer Qin Ang, are you here to report the current situation to me?”

Bai Shao’s words were filled with a strong sense of pressure.

“I’m sorry, Lord Bai Shao. Many areas of the City of Clear Skies are experiencing spatial overlaps, with a large number of unknown monsters and enemies appearing in the city. The most serious situations are in the Nine Ring and Ten Ring areas, as well as the external residential zones. Some local areas have already fallen, with all defending personnel killed.”

Qin Ang reported in an orderly manner.

Bai Shao frowned upon hearing this and said sternly,

“Didn’t we prepare for this beforehand? Even the Clear Sky Legion has been deployed; how did it end up like this?”

“The main reason is that the enemy’s level of difficulty exceeded our expectations. Additionally, the appearance of dense gray mist has caused extremely low visibility, which has restricted various support weapons and led to frequent ambushes on the defending personnel.”

“Do you have any countermeasures?”

“Lord Bai Shao, shouldn’t we consider having those awakened individuals from the KPI division of the City of Clear Skies take action? They might have unexpected effects and help end this chaos quickly.”

Qin Ang expressed his thoughts.

Bai Shao immediately raised his hand to interrupt Qin Ang, decisively refusing.

“No way. Those half-baked awakened individuals can’t even understand their own abilities. How can they go to battle? Moreover, if casualties occur, it would be a loss even if they did make a difference.”

“Then how about reallocating troops from the areas of the City of Clear Skies that haven’t been attacked to support the heavily affected areas?”

“Reassigning those troops now would be like robbing Peter to pay Paul. Once the forces are moved away, if any unforeseen changes happen later, it will be complete chaos!”

“Lord, what is your opinion?”

Qin Ang asked calmly.

“Order the defensive troops near the attacked areas to seal off the affected zones and prevent the chaos from spreading. Additionally, send more troops from the Clear Sky Legion into the city to assist in combat until the gray mist dissipates, and use air support to clear them out.”

Bai Shao gave the corresponding authorization.

“Understood!”

“And ensure the protection of key industries within the City of Clear Skies. I don’t want to hear about any accidents.”

“Understood. I will handle it properly.”

Qin Ang replied respectfully, satisfied with the results he had obtained.

Sacred Sound Welfare Institute.

Shen Qiu led Amu and his five-member special forces team, along with Huang Gan and the other ten, toward the main building.

At this moment, several corpses noticed them and charged in from all directions.

Shen Qiu and Amu calmly opened fire on the approaching corpses, covering Huang Gan and the others as they advanced.

“How many floors is the nursery on?” Amu asked while fighting.

“The nursery is in that small building behind the main building; the entire building has three floors. But after the incident, we moved all the infants to the second and third floors,” Aunt Qiao replied immediately.

“Okay, we understand.”

Upon hearing Aunt Qiao’s words, Amu’s expression eased slightly; being concentrated together would make rescue easier.

Before long, Shen Qiu and the others successfully charged into the main hall of the building.

At a glance, the hall was a scene of devastation, with equipment toppled all over the place and dismembered bodies scattered about. In a corner, a few corpses were gnawing on something, and the floor was soaked with blood.

When the corpses heard the noise, they stopped, turned their heads toward Shen Qiu and the others, and bared their bloody mouths.

Bang!

Without hesitation, Shen Qiu pulled the trigger and shot one corpse in the head.

Amu and the others quickly opened fire, killing the remaining corpses.

The harsh gunfire echoed through the public hall.

At this moment, Amu waved his hand and said, “Huang Chuan, Zhang Lu, you two go ahead and clear the path!”

“Yes!”

Huang Chuan and the others, armed with guns, quickened their pace to move in front. Although they had Shen Qiu leading the way, Amu had no intention of letting him take the lead.

Just as they moved forward, Shen Qiu suddenly heard a series of loud thumps coming from the corridors and stairways surrounding the public hall.

Shen Qiu’s expression changed abruptly as he warned, “Be careful; a large number of corpses are coming!”

“Oh no, what do we do?”

Huang Gan was also so scared that his legs went weak.

Amu quickly made a decision and shouted to everyone, “Quick, quick, rush in!”

Upon hearing this, Huang Gan and the others immediately began to run forward.

At that moment, bloodied corpses charged out from all the corridor entrances and stairways, rushing toward Shen Qiu and the others like rabid dogs.

As they fired to cover Huang Gan and the others, Shen Qiu and the team kept running forward.

They soon reached the entrance connecting the main building to the back building.

“Get in! Hurry!” Amu urged repeatedly.

“Ah!”

Suddenly, Zhao Lian and the others inside screamed in terror.

Upon hearing the scream, Shen Qiu immediately turned around and rushed inside. He saw three ferocious corpses charging toward them in the corridor.

Zhao Lian and the others were so frightened that they started to retreat.

“Get down!” Shen Qiu shouted at Zhao Lian and the others.

Hearing Shen Qiu’s voice, Zhao Lian and the others quickly crouched down.

Bang bang!

Shen Qiu accurately shot down two of the corpses, but when he went to shoot the third, he realized his magazine was empty.

At that moment, the corpse lunged at him, reaching out to grab him.

Shen Qiu remained completely calm; he quickly raised his rifle butt and slammed it hard against the corpse’s face. As it staggered back, he kicked it with force, knocking it to the ground.

Bang!

Amu led the others inside and fired two more shots at the fallen corpse, urgently shouting, “Don’t stop here; keep moving forward!”

“Got it!”

Shen Qiu swiftly removed the empty magazine, replaced it with a new one, and led the team forward.

Amu and the others closed the doors of the main building and quickly caught up.

Soon, Shen Qiu and the team passed through the corridor and arrived at the entrance of the nursery building.

However, this time, Shen Qiu didn’t rush in recklessly. He cautiously leaned in to take a look.

The sight before him caused Shen Qiu to furrow his brow.
