Chapter 47 - Seeking Help
If he were to run into other corpses or monsters, that would be a big problem.
“Roar~”
At that moment, the bulky corpse warrior chased after him like a mad dog, not giving Shen Qiu any time to catch his breath or hesitate.
Shen Qiu could only continue to run forward while quickly recalling the layout of buildings and streets in the area.
After all, he had grown up here, and he was very familiar with the surroundings.
It wasn’t as if he would be running around like a headless chicken just because visibility was low.
Soon, Shen Qiu reached the entrance of a narrow alley. He decisively turned left and darted inside, trying to shake off the bulky corpse warrior.
Unfortunately, the bulky corpse warrior followed him into the alley.
Shen Qiu kept his cool and tried to lead it in circles.
However, after a few minutes, he still hadn’t managed to lose it; the corpse warrior clung to him like a stubborn plaster.
At that moment, Shen Qiu suddenly heard a sound coming from the gray mist ahead.
Clang! Clang! The heavy sound of metal footsteps.
Shen Qiu’s eyelids twitched, and he suddenly stopped.
The bulky corpse warrior behind him was still growling and chasing him.
He truly found himself surrounded by danger, with pursuers on both sides.
Shen Qiu calmly scanned his surroundings and immediately fixed his gaze on a nearby children’s themed restaurant. The restaurant was three stories high, and its facade and walls were adorned with various cartoon animal reliefs.
He dashed over and grabbed onto the gaps in the reliefs, climbing up with the agility of a monkey!
At that moment, the bulky corpse warrior chased after him, and in the mist ahead, seven scavenger robots emerged.
At this moment, the scavenger’s camera-like head rotated, and the infrared targeting system locked onto the corpse warrior.
The corpse warrior’s blood-red eyes also locked onto the scavenger and charged forward.
The two sides actually started fighting.
Bang! Bang!
The seven scavengers opened fire with a vengeance.
Bullets rained down on the corpse warrior, creating sparks!
However, the corpse warrior was like a humanoid tank, charging through the hail of bullets and swinging its blade at one of the scavengers.
Crack!
Instantly, that scavenger was cleaved to the ground, its thick steel shell unable to withstand the blade, sparks flying from the breach.
Two scavengers rushed in close, using their mechanical arms to grab the corpse warrior in an attempt to pin it down.
But the corpse warrior stood firm and instead swung its large blade horizontally.
Crack!
Two camera heads flew off and landed on the ground.
At that moment, Shen Qiu, who had climbed to the rooftop of the restaurant, looked down and was taken aback. This monster was indeed not an ordinary freak; it had taken down three scavengers in the blink of an eye.
He estimated that the remaining four scavengers wouldn’t be enough to stop it.
Thinking of this, Shen Qiu dared not linger and quickly climbed down the back drainage pipe of the restaurant.
Once on the ground, he immediately escaped along the back street.
After more than ten minutes, Shen Qiu reached a side street and hid behind an outdoor trash bin.
He observed the surroundings shrouded in gray mist. If all went well, he should have shaken off the corpse warrior completely and was temporarily safe.
Phew~
Shen Qiu let out a long breath and took out his phone to check it.
A series of alert messages popped up.
“Emergency Alert: City of Clear Skies is in a state of emergency. Access to the area of Ten Rings · Sacred Sound Street is prohibited. Approaching Ten Rings · Peace Dove Square is prohibited.”
“Emergency notification: Temporary nighttime restrictions are in effect; citizens are prohibited from going out.”
After reading this, Shen Qiu silently set his phone to silent mode and put it away.
He glanced around and listened carefully.
Shen Qiu could clearly hear the distant sounds of gunfire and explosions coming from several places.
If he was not mistaken, those directions should be where the fighting was taking place.
The situation outside was worse than he had imagined.
If he continued to run around aimlessly, he would surely lose his life.
Shen Qiu then reached for a nearby residential building and tried knocking on the door, calling out.
“Is anyone there?”
“Sorry to disturb you; can I come in and hide for a bit?”
After a few minutes, there was still no response from inside, and it remained silent.
With no choice, Shen Qiu moved on to knock on another door for help.
After trying more than a dozen houses, he had to return to the street. All the doors were securely locked, and no one dared to open up.
Shen Qiu’s expression changed several times, and he felt he had no options left. He could only cautiously make his way back toward the welfare institute along the street.
As he walked, he suddenly heard movement ahead, and he immediately stopped, raising his gun and quietly shouting.
“Who is it?”
Through the mist ahead, a staggering figure appeared. Upon closer inspection, Shen Qiu saw it was a young man wearing a denim jacket and glasses.
Seeing Shen Qiu, the young man quickly raised his hand, his mouth opening to let out a rough voice.
“Help, help me!”
“Help!”
A sense of danger inexplicably welled up in Shen Qiu’s heart. He pointed his gun at the young man and warned him.
“Stop! Don’t come any closer.”
Unfortunately, the young man in front of Shen Qiu seemed to disregard his warning and continued to step toward him, repeatedly mumbling.
“Help me!”
Shen Qiu’s pupils constricted, and he immediately pulled the trigger!
Bang!
A bullet struck the young man’s thigh.
However, the young man merely twitched but did not fall down; he kept approaching Shen Qiu.
Shen Qiu’s heart skipped a beat, and he aimed his gun at the young man’s head.
Suddenly, the young man’s chest split open, and a red figure darted out, flying toward Shen Qiu at incredible speed.
Bang bang!
Shen Qiu opened fire on the red figure!
Thick blood and flesh splattered everywhere.
The figure fell directly to the ground. Shen Qiu looked down closely and saw that what he had shot down was an unknown parasitic creature resembling a bat, with two pairs of translucent red wings and four red tentacles, its body covered in viscous liquid.
Shen Qiu felt a chill run down his spine as he looked at the destroyed parasite. He was glad he hadn’t been careless; otherwise, it would have been trouble.
At that moment, amidst the gray mist, indistinct figures began to emerge; a horde of zombies heard the noise and began to converge on him. Shen Qiu’s heart sank; he knew he had stirred up a hornet’s nest.
He immediately turned and ran away from the welfare institute to draw the monsters away and prevent them from harming others.
“Ah~”
Zombies suddenly popped out from the street corners in front of Shen Qiu, lunging toward him.
Without hesitation, Shen Qiu opened fire, taking down the zombies in his way.
Thus, he fled for his life.
However, the more he ran, the more zombies began to chase after him, and their numbers only increased.
Shen Qiu looked utterly bewildered. Just then, he noticed a row of human-powered bicycles parked by the roadside.
He rushed over, violently smashing the bike locks with the butt of his gun and jumped onto one of the bicycles, pedaling furiously.
At this point, Shen Qiu couldn’t care less and pedaled like mad.
Swish~
The entire bicycle shot forward as if it were taking off, speeding through the foggy streets.
Occasionally, a few zombies would emerge from the mist ahead to block his path, but Shen Qiu simply tilted the handlebars and narrowly brushed past them.
Immediately after, Shen Qiu maneuvered the bicycle skillfully, turning into a small path beside the street and darting inside.
