Chapter 60 - Ambush
After about twenty minutes, Shen Qiu stood in the living room on the first floor. He had searched the entire house but found nothing particularly valuable, so he symbolically tossed a book into his backpack.
Then Shen Qiu looked at the tightly closed front door and fell into thought.
He had two choices: one was to hide in this house and wait for night to fall, hoping for another overlap. If that happened, he could leave.
The other option was to leave this place and search for overlapping areas to escape this world.
From the information he gathered on the Dark Eye website, it seemed that overlaps occurred continuously whenever night fell, allowing movement between the two sides!
Soon, Shen Qiu made a decision. He chose to actively seek out overlapping areas to leave.
The reason was that the two monsters he had just killed were sleeping in coffins for unknown reasons. However, it was certain that once certain conditions were met, these monsters would definitely awaken.
This city appeared vast, with so many buildings.
If every household has a coffin, then the number of monsters here must be in the millions, or even more!
Thinking of this number made Shen Qiu shudder involuntarily, his scalp tingling.
He gently opened the door and peeked outside.
What he saw made him pause for a moment. Dozens of figures were scattered across the street.
From their appearance and clothing, they seemed to be people from the Red Alliance, with a mix of men and women, young and old.
If nothing unexpected happened, this group must have also overlapped in with him.
After a brief change of expression, Shen Qiu opened the door and stepped outside. Since this building had no back door, he could only exit through the front and silently walked left along the street.
From his previous rough glance from the rooftop, he could judge that heading left would lead to a relatively lower density of buildings.
Meanwhile, on the street, those who had been overlapped in were anxiously questioning each other.
“Where is this? How did I suddenly end up here?”
“I don’t know. We wouldn’t have become missing persons too, would we? How can we get back?”
“It’s so scary! There are coffins in this house!”
“Everyone, don’t be afraid and don’t panic. We were just overlapped in. I’ve had the fortune of experiencing it once and survived. If you’re willing to pay, I can help you stay alive.”
At that moment, a young man with dyed yellow hair and torn jeans shouted loudly.
“Really? How much?”
“How much?”
Many people on the scene hurriedly asked.
“Two hundred thousand for each person!”
The young man held up two fingers as he spoke.
“No way! That’s so expensive!”
“We don’t have that much money! Even if we did, we couldn’t give it to you. Who carries that much cash on them?”
The people present expressed their frustration.
“No money, no talk. And if you don’t have that much cash, it’s simple—just write a promissory note.”
The young man chuckled.
“Can you lower the price a bit? I really don’t have that much money,” a girl in a blue school uniform said softly, her appearance quite innocent.
The young man looked at her and suddenly had a lewd expression. He said to her, “It’s not impossible. If you don’t have money, you can pay with your body!”
The girl was immediately frightened and took a step back.
“You—”
At that moment, two strong men exchanged glances, their eyes revealing a fierce expression. They said to the young man, “We’ll pay!”
Then, the two of them approached the young man. One of them, taking advantage of the young man’s distraction, pulled out a folding knife and pressed it directly against his neck.
“Don’t move!”
“What are you trying to do?” The young man was completely stunned.
“Take us back, or we’ll kill you.”
The two muscular men threatened him openly.
“Wait, wait! Let’s talk this over!”
The remaining people who had been overlapped in began to back away in fear.
At that moment, in a nearby building, the curtains were slowly pulled back at one corner.
Several dark figures silently watched this farce unfold.
Shen Qiu glanced coldly at the scene, showing no interest in getting involved. In the absence of order, sometimes humans are scarier than monsters.
Just then, a middle-aged woman dressed very ordinarily suddenly blocked Shen Qiu’s path.
“Hey, young man, wait a moment.”
Shen Qiu turned his head and looked at her warily.
“What’s the matter?”
The woman noticed the weapon in Shen Qiu’s hand and, despite his tense demeanor, spoke calmly without any sign of panic.
“Can we stick together? It would be safer that way.”
“No, thank you.”
Shen Qiu glanced at the woman and politely refused, then tried to walk away.
“How can you refuse me? Don’t you have any compassion? Don’t you know about unity and mutual assistance?”
The woman began to scold Shen Qiu, reaching out to grab his backpack.
Without hesitation, Shen Qiu raised the mechanical blade towards her, causing her to retract her hand in fright.
However, once she pulled back, the woman, feeling embarrassed and angry, shouted, “What are you doing? How dare you point a knife at me? Do you believe I won’t call the police on you?”
“Get lost!”
Shen Qiu swung the knife at her without hesitation.
The middle-aged woman in front of him was so frightened that she fell to the ground.
Shen Qiu didn’t pay her any mind and continued walking forward. He needed to find the overlap area and leave before the monsters woke up; otherwise, the consequences would be dire.
At that moment, doors on both sides of the street were pushed open, and several members of the Red Alliance emerged, having heard the commotion outside. Some of them were even holding various pieces of jewelry.
Shen Qiu immediately spotted a middle-aged man with a bare torso and a tiger tattoo on his arm; his eyes turned greedy as he rushed toward one of the jewelry holders and snatched the items from their hands.
“What are you doing? Are you robbing me?”
“Go to hell!”
Shen Qiu quickened his pace.
Suddenly, a loud bang echoed through the silent night!
The sharp sound of gunfire shattered the tranquility as the man who had just grabbed the jewelry collapsed, blood pouring out onto the ground.
“There’s been a murder!”
A girl dressed in a waitress uniform screamed in terror.
Shen Qiu quickly ducked into an alley between the nearby buildings.
He cautiously peeked his head out to see what was happening.
On both sides of the street, a group of people wearing gray combat uniforms appeared, each emblazoned with a scorpion emblem on their chests. Some were armed with submachine guns, while others carried handguns.
Every one of them wore an evil grin on their faces.
From their appearances and attire, Shen Qiu quickly deduced that these people were members of the Gray Alliance.
Moreover, they were not ordinary individuals; they had the vibe of professional mercenaries, each exuding a ruthless aura.
“What do you want?”
“Raise your hands and surrender, little lambs.”
The leader, a youth with a face full of excess flesh, licked the blade of his knife and grinned threateningly.
“We are members of the Red Alliance. Aren’t you afraid that the Red Alliance will want to capture you?”
An older man dressed in a lawyer’s suit shouted in panic.
“Haha, we’re here to catch you Red Alliance lambs. Do you really think we fear the Red Alliance? Haha! Let me tell you, this is an independent world with no order. The Red Alliance’s reach cannot extend here. Besides, even if we kill all of you, how would the Red Alliance know it was us? And anyway, who do they think they are? Give us some time, and when our strength reaches the sky, we won’t fear anyone!”
The leading youth became more and more excited as he spoke.
“Run!”
Seeing the situation was dire, the older man immediately dashed toward a nearby alley, but as soon as he entered…
Swish!
He was thrown back out and slammed hard onto the ground.
A giant of a man, two meters tall, built like a musclebound beast with dark skin, stepped out of the alley. He warned everyone present, “Don’t make any futile struggles; all the exits in this area have been sealed off!”
After seeing this, Shen Qiu decisively ran into the dead end. When he reached the end, he jumped up and used his feet to push against the walls on either side to climb.
Shen Qiu climbed to the top of the wall with agility, like a gecko.
At this moment, in the corner of the dead end, a puddle of inconspicuous water revealed a pair of eyes watching Shen Qiu.
