Chapter 22
“The release of my debut track is just around the corner!”
So far, I’ve had a few collabs and even invited real reporters for my debut showcase.
During all the scheduling, I made a couple of verbal blunders, but thankfully, everything passed without major controversies, and my broadcasts are getting bigger and bigger.
However, one problem has arisen…
“What? You’re quitting the Vocal Academy?”
“Not quitting; I just plan to temporarily suspend my registration.”
“Why…?”
Upon hearing the sudden news of me stopping my lessons, my Vocal Teacher looked shocked, and I lowered my head as if I had no excuse.
“I don’t have any money…”
“Oh…”
A few days ago, my parents found out that I had dropped out of school. They were covering the university tuition and related expenses, so it was bound to be discovered.
Honestly, I could say I held out for about a month.
Naturally, my parents were furious when I quit without saying a word, demanding that I come home right away and instantly cutting off my support.
I had already spent all my savings on my Avatar and broadcast equipment, and even with the money I made from live streaming, I found it burdensome to cover both my phone bill and the Vocal lessons.
The broadcasting platform took a bigger commission than I expected.
Moreover, since I’m part of the agency, they’re taking a cut too, leading to a rather impoverished lifestyle.
“Yeah, the lesson fees are a bit burdensome.”
“Right? Haha, but I plan to re-register once I have more income.”
Upon hearing my intention to re-register when I have more income, my Vocal Teacher hesitated for a moment before making a subtle suggestion.
“Um… would you like to take on a part-time job?”
“Wait, what kind of part-time job?”
“Ah, but don’t tell the other members, okay?”
After making a suggestion, my Vocal Teacher appeared a bit hesitant.
“What is it? I won’t say anything. I don’t even know the names of the other students.”
“Well… since you only take private lessons, I guess that’s fair. Let me tell you.”
Why is she stalling like this? My curiosity grew, and I leaned in closer as my Vocal Teacher glanced around before continuing.
“My younger sister has a track she’s preparing and is looking for vocalists. Since your voice is so beautiful, I thought you might want to give it a try? You’ll get paid well.”
“Huh?”
I was taken aback for a moment.
Featuring on a track? Isn’t that something only real singers do?
“She’s a rookie and is looking for someone. She said she wanted a clear female vocal sound since my voice doesn’t quite match.”
Well, I had listened to my Vocal Teacher sing a few times, and her voice was quite husky.
“Are you worried? If you decide to do it, I’ll help you a lot on the side. I usually don’t make such offers, but I feel so sad knowing you’re quitting. Plus, having someone like you would be helpful for my sister.”
I felt tempted by the suggestion. It really was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I didn’t know who her sister was, but I trusted that my Vocal Teacher wouldn’t recommend just anyone.
However…
“Ah… that’s a really great offer, but…”
“A great offer…?”
“Actually, I’m signed under an agency, you see? I need to talk to them about it.”
I am officially part of The Six.
Of course, I need to discuss such matters with the company.
“Oh… right.”
My Vocal Teacher nodded slightly at my mention of having a company.
I expected her to be surprised, but her lack of reaction made me feel a bit flustered.
“You’re not surprised…? I never mentioned it before.”
“Well, considering someone like you, it’s only natural that you have an agency. I just hadn’t brought it up until now… So, where are you signed? AG? SN? Or is it JYB?”
She nonchalantly named the Big Three agencies of the entertainment world, catching me off guard.
“Huh? Oh, it’s not an entertainment agency.”
“What? Then where…?”
“Um, I…”
I couldn’t help but explain the whole situation to my Vocal Teacher.
I’m a virtual YouTuber and that I just passed an audition, leading up to my debut track.
“Huh? You have a debut track coming out? Can we hear it? But what’s this virtual YouTuber thing? Is it something like YouTube?”
I briefly explained, but seeing her not even know what a virtual YouTuber was, I pondered how to clarify as my face slowly warmed up. But for me, being a virtual YouTuber is my job. I did my best to calmly explain.
“Oh… So, you’re using a character instead of showing your face on camera, right?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“Haha… I see! Technology has really improved these days…”
“R-Right? There are many people who like it too.”
“Of course! Who wouldn’t like you? But it’s good because you can protect your identity while doing this.”
“Yes, exactly.”
“Then please check with your company, and if possible, let me know. I’ll also ask my sister.”
“Sure, I will.”
“Great! Uh, your identity is a secret, right? I’ll just make sure we communicate online.”
“Uh, I’d appreciate that.”
“Got it, I’ll write down my sister’s name in English for you.”
With that, my Vocal Teacher tore a sheet from her notebook and wrote down the name in English.
I read the beautifully written name.
“Is it Slim Gold?”
“Uh, yeah. Does it sound a bit cheesy? He’s slim and has yellow hair, so he calls himself Slim Gold.”
“Oh…”
To be honest, it did sound a bit cheesy, so I nodded.
“His name is a bit silly, but he’s seriously handsome. What do you say? Want an introduction?”
“Ah, no, I’m fine. Anyway, I’ll talk to the agency.”
An introduction? What a terrifying thought.
I shook my head at my Vocal Teacher and stood up.
“Well then, I’ll take my leave now.”
“Alright! After chatting, text me~”
Leaving the Vocal Academy, I immediately called my manager.
“Hello?”
“Manager.”
“What’s going on?”
“I got an external request.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“I received a proposal for featuring from my Vocal Academy.”
“A proposal for featuring? Can you elaborate?”
“Well…”
I explained everything that had happened up until now.
How I’d registered the academy right after the auditions and built a friendship with my Vocal Teacher.
How I trained under her and filmed a singing video during the fourth audition, and when I mentioned that I needed to temporarily stop due to money issues, she proposed a part-time job and featuring instead.
“Is there any difficulty in your living conditions? Should I tell the company to check on grants?”
“Oh, it’s not that serious.”
“No, since it’s the Vocal Academy, they would have originally planned to support you, so we can cover some expenses.”
“What? Really?”
I feel a bit reluctant to receive just support, but if it’s for that reason…
“Yes, I’ll mention it to the company. But do you know the name of the artist you would be featuring for?”
“Ah… Well, I heard it was Slim Gold.”
“Ah, Slim Gold… I feel like I’ve heard that name before; hold on a second.”
Of course, I had heard it; my Vocal Teacher mentioned he was a rookie. Plus, since she recommended a student like me for featuring, I can’t imagine he’s famous.
“Is it Miro? Are you absolutely sure it’s Slim Gold? Could you read me the spelling given by your Vocal Teacher?”
“Uh? I can read English well… just a moment… s…”
I read the English name my Vocal Teacher gave me, and I could hear a gasp of surprise from the other end of the line.
“Miro!”
“Yes?”
“We absolutely must finalize this deal!”
“Oh… Is he famous?”
It was the first time I heard this name? My curiosity showed as I spoke, and my manager’s voice came through a bit more excitedly.
“No! He’s a rookie, so he doesn’t have much reputation yet, but compared to our group, he’s immensely famous!”
“Oh…”
So it’s fame in relative terms…
“Still, since he’s a rookie beginning to make a name for himself, if you can jump in now, it’ll be a fantastic opportunity.”
“Alright then. Should I let my Vocal Teacher know that the company approved it?”
“Just be sure to report back to the higher-ups, alright? But generally, they should give the green light, so it’s okay to let her know in advance.”
“Really?”
It would be quite awkward if they ended up saying no later.
“I think it’s almost guaranteed… And even if it doesn’t go through, you can participate as Kim Soo-hyun instead of Miro from the Celestial Realm Project.”
“Huh? Can I really participate using my name?”
“Of course! We signed a contract for you as the virtual YouTuber Miro, right? As long as it doesn’t interfere with your activities as Miro, it’s entirely fine for you to take on other work.”
“Oh, I see…”
This was new information for me; Miro and Kim Soo-hyun are considered distinct.
“Okay, I’ll let her know right away.”
“Great! Thank you for bringing this good news. Please also convey my thanks to your Vocal Teacher.”
“Okay, got it.”
“Take care.”
“Yes, you too.”
After finishing the call with my manager, I immediately sent a message to my Vocal Teacher saying it was possible.
And the next day…
“What?”
“I’m sorry… the higher-ups have decided that for now, we should focus internally without external schedules…”
“What??”
“I’m sorry…”
I was initially confident the external featuring would be accepted, but it was turned down by the higher-ups.
“Hello? Teacher, the thing is…”
“Soo-hyun! This friend likes you! That’s great!”
Regrettably, the featuring deal didn’t come through.
In the end…
“I… the company declined…”
“Huh?”
“But uh, can I participate under my real name instead of my virtual YouTuber name?”
I ended up participating in the featuring not as the virtual YouTuber Miro but as the human Kim Soo-hyun.
