ONE KICK MAN

Chapter 36: Whispers of the Past

The sun rose as Zephyr carried One Kick Man across a vast expanse of rolling hills. The pendant around his neck glowed faintly, pulsing like a heartbeat. Each pulse seemed to align with Zephyr's strides, urging them forward toward an unknown destination.

By midday, they reached the edge of a desolate region—a land of crumbled stone structures and withered trees. The air was heavy with the weight of history, and an eerie silence hung over the ruins.

"This place feels... ancient," One Kick Man muttered, dismounting Zephyr. The ground beneath his boots was dry and cracked, littered with shards of stone etched with strange symbols.

Zephyr pawed the ground and let out a low whinny, his eyes fixed on a partially collapsed archway.

"You think we're supposed to go in there?" One Kick Man asked.

The steed nodded—an action so deliberate it sent a chill down One Kick Man's spine.

He approached the archway cautiously, the pendant's glow intensifying with every step. Beyond the arch lay a dark chamber, its walls covered in faded carvings. With Zephyr close behind, One Kick Man lit a torch and stepped inside.

The carvings depicted scenes of battle—warriors wielding glowing weapons, massive beasts, and a majestic steed with wings outstretched. At the center of it all was a cloaked figure, their hand resting on the steed's mane.

One Kick Man ran his fingers over the carvings. "This... looks like you, Zephyr."

The steed whinnied softly, his gaze fixed on the cloaked figure.

Beneath the carving was an inscription in a language One Kick Man couldn't understand. The pendant began to hum, its light casting a golden glow over the words. Slowly, the symbols rearranged themselves, forming a readable script:

"To the guardian of balance, bound by loyalty and love. Seek the valley where the sun meets the moon. There, the truth shall be revealed."

"The valley where the sun meets the moon," One Kick Man repeated. "What does that mean?"

Zephyr stepped forward, his wings brushing against the carvings. A gust of wind stirred the dust, revealing more symbols—a crude map etched into the stone.

"This must be it," One Kick Man said, studying the map. "Our next destination."

As they turned to leave, the chamber began to tremble. The ground shook, and debris fell from the ceiling. Outside, a shadowy figure emerged from the ruins, its form shifting and flickering like smoke.

"You should not have come here," the figure hissed, its voice echoing unnaturally.

One Kick Man stepped in front of Zephyr, fists raised. "Yeah? And who's gonna stop us?"

The figure lunged, its form solidifying into a beast with glowing red eyes. One Kick Man met its charge head-on, delivering a powerful punch that sent it reeling. Zephyr joined the fray, unleashing a blast of wind that scattered the creature into wisps of shadow.

As the dust settled, the ruins fell silent once more.

"Looks like someone doesn't want us finding out the truth," One Kick Man said, brushing dirt off his coat.

Zephyr nuzzled him gently, his wings folding at his sides.

"Don't worry," One Kick Man said, mounting the steed. "We've got this. Let's find that valley."

With the map etched in his memory and the pendant glowing brighter than ever, they set off into the horizon, the mysteries of Zephyr's past growing ever deeper.

To be continued..
