Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Growth and the Unknown Samurai
Yamato's dream was to become a brave woman. Naturally, she showed a keen interest in any training that could improve her strength.
This, however, spelled trouble for Jack and Black Maria, who weren't exactly enthusiastic about training themselves. Yamato, despite her naivety, understood the concept of mutual supervision, and she wasn't one to back down easily. No matter what tactics the other two tried, they couldn't change her mind.
Jack, on the other hand, dreaded the idea of Kaido finding out he was slacking off. He could already imagine Kaido swinging the kanabo at his rear. Left with no choice, Jack grudgingly joined Yamato and Maria in their rigorous training sessions.
Meanwhile, the pirate world was in upheaval. Even after Gol D. Roger's death, his parting words had ignited a frenzy across the seas. From the East Blue to the New World, countless individuals plunged headfirst into the chaotic, reviled life of piracy, all in pursuit of Roger's legendary treasure.
Kings and rulers secretly formed pirate crews, dreaming of the fabled One Piece. The seas were a battlefield—bloody and chaotic. Especially in the past two years, elite pirates who had fought their way through the Grand Line were now challenging the infamous crews of the New World, including the Beasts Pirates.
Kaido, along with King and Queen, had been forced to take turns heading out to defend the crew's reputation. At the same time, Kaido launched large-scale recruitment efforts. Jack, being too young, was tasked with staying on Onigashima to train alongside the girls.
...
Time slipped by in this relatively uneventful routine. Before anyone knew it, the year 1509 of the Sea Calendar arrived.
At thirteen, Jack had grown to nearly five meters tall. Fourteen-year-old Black Maria wasn't far behind, standing just half a head shorter at over four meters. This brought Jack some relief. He thought to himself, At least I won't have to worry about Maria falling too far behind. No awkward situations like needing to scare off ghosts by myself when I'm thirty.
But then...
"Hey, Jack! Let's go play on Onigashima! Come on, pleeease!"
Jack sighed, lifting his arm as Yamato hopped onto it effortlessly. As he looked at her petite, 1.7-meter frame—his arm thicker than her waist—he fell into deep thought.
Maybe I was wrong? Horns don't necessarily mean blood relation... But no, with Kaido's strength, he'd surely notice if she wasn't his kid. Maybe it's just that Yamato hasn't hit her growth spurt yet.
"Hey, you perv! Jack, are you even listening? Let's go to Onigashima, we're so bored here!"
"Maria! Come with us, pleeease!"
Black Maria pondered for a moment before nodding. Yamato leaped down from Jack's arm with glee. Majority rule prevailed, and Jack, who had some business with Kaido anyway, begrudgingly agreed. The trio, accompanied by a handful of subordinates, set off toward Wano.
While they traveled, Jack opened his system interface to check his stats:
Name: Jack
Constitution: 85 (SSR)
Agility: 70 (SR)
Strength: 92 (SSR)
Perception: 69 (SR)
Willpower: 70 (SR)
Rank: SR
(T/N: Attribute tiers correspond to multiples of 20: NR (Normal), R (Rare), SR (Super Rare), SSR (Super Super Rare), UR (Ultra Rare).)
Skills: Gunmanship: Intermediate, Swordsmanship: Intermediate, Armament Haki: Intermediate, Observation Haki: Beginner, Conqueror's Haki: Not unlocked, Devil Fruit: Advanced (Zoan-type, Elephant-Elephant Fruit, Ancient Model: Mammoth), Skills: Trunk Whip, Tusk Charge, Stomp
Special Abilities: Immortal Body (Intermediate)
Over the past few years, Jack's growth had slowed significantly. He suspected it was because his strength now vastly outpaced Yamato and Maria's. Or maybe it was simply that he had milked them for all the system rewards they could offer. Either way, the attribute points from them had dwindled.
Still, thanks to their early contributions, some sparring with Kaido, and relentless training, Jack's stats were impressive enough to elevate him from an R to an SR rank.
Kaido's insistence on training their Devil Fruit abilities had paid off, too. Though Jack couldn't see Yamato and Maria's system interfaces, he could tell from their sparring that their Devil Fruit mastery was on par with his.
In terms of Armament Haki, however, Jack held a clear advantage, likely due to his sheer physicality. His "Immortal Body" ability had only recently leveled up to intermediate, courtesy of Kaido dropping him from 7,000 meters in the sky.
Jack vividly remembered Kaido's words: Once your immortal body reaches a certain level of development, you can start venturing out to sea.
Now that the time had come, excitement bubbled within him.
The group eventually reached the desolate Rabbit Bowl, mounted their crocodile steeds, and began their journey toward Bakura Town. Partway there, however, they changed course toward Amigasa Village.
(T/N: Bakura Town is where the officials and the Beast Pirates reside.[16] It is located at the foot of the mountain where Kuri Castle used to be, and it has a large Torii at its entrance.
Yamato had softened over the years. Seeing the barren landscape and the wary, hateful eyes of the villagers, she no longer reacted with frustration. Despite knowing it wouldn't erase their resentment toward the Beasts Pirates, she still sent subordinates to distribute clean food and water when she could.
Surprisingly, neither Kaido nor King opposed her actions. Some villagers even came to appreciate Yamato, grateful for the sustenance that kept their children alive.
"Let's move out."
After distributing the supplies, the group turned back toward Bakura Town. But before long, a group of warriors on strange mounts appeared ahead of them.
"Who are they? Someone bold enough to ride so openly?"
At the head of the group was a towering man with a long sword strapped to his waist. His skin was a faint red, and he rode an enormous blue water buffalo with a menacing air.
The ground rumbled with the pounding of hooves, smoke trailing behind the riders as they sped past Jack's group without slowing.
"Who are these warriors?" Jack murmured, his expression darkening. "And where are they headed?"
