Chapter 38: Chapter 38: "He's Just a Kid"
Lauren's heart was a storm of regret. If he could choose again, he would have waited quietly for Jack's judgment. That would have been far better than this. The harbor lay in ruins, his son's fate was unknown, his subordinates were either dead or severely injured, and the villagers who came to help had been slaughtered.
Now, Rim had charged toward the town with a group of pirates, their excitement painting a grim picture of the townsfolk's fate. Facing such vicious marauders, the outcome was all too predictable.
Jack, noticing Lauren frozen in place, hefted his spiked club and rushed forward. He had fought Lauren briefly and realized his strength surpassed that of Pub. This made Lauren a formidable opponent.
If someone of this caliber was merely a harbor guard, Jack needed to rethink his next steps. He had to understand the true strength of these nations. Capturing Lauren alive was crucial.
"Lauren-sama!"
One of the guards, seeing Lauren distracted, bravely threw himself in front of Jack.
BOOM!
Jack's club smashed down, turning the loyal guard into pulp.
SMACK!
"What are you doing? Focus!"
"This is our only chance to escape! His men have mostly scattered. We have to kill him now!"
Buck's furious roar snapped Lauren out of his regret. Looking at the remains of the guard beneath Jack's weapon, veins bulged on Lauren's neck. He raised his massive sword and leapt toward Jack.
"Jack!"
CLANG!
"Not bad! Your strength and coordination are impressive," Jack commented, tilting his head as a bullet grazed his forehead and fell away. He glanced at Buck in the distance.
"But, unfortunately, strength alone won't cut it."
Jack's observation was cold, yet precise. After advancing his Armament Haki to higher levels, he could now coat his body entirely—from his head to his toes—with the impenetrable force. Techniques and knowledge of Haki usage flowed seamlessly into his mind, making his defense nearly flawless.
Though Buck's marksmanship was excellent, his bullets couldn't penetrate Jack's Haki-enhanced defense. At best, they served as an annoyance.
And they did. Jack was growing irritated. Like a persistent mosquito buzzing around, Buck's interference stoked his anger.
In the middle of his battle with Lauren, Jack started to track Buck's position with Observation Haki.
In fairness, Lauren's swordsmanship was commendable. If he had faced Pub, Lauren would undoubtedly have emerged victorious. But to Jack, Lauren was easier to deal with. His attacks were straightforward and brutal—a style Jack himself favored.
While Lauren's raw strength might slightly exceed Jack's, his endurance fell short. As the battle dragged on, Lauren's movements became sluggish. The relentless strikes of Jack's spiked club pushed him back, his fatigue growing more apparent.
When Jack's struck yet again, it shattered the last remnants of Lauren's determination.
CRASH!
BANG!
This was Jack's strongest attack. Concentrating all his Armament Haki into his core, Jack unleashed a devastating downward blow. Its power was immense, its speed blinding—enough to shatter even a massive boulder in one strike.
Lauren, accustomed to Jack's attacks, had been holding his own. But this time, Jack's move caught him off guard. Striking first and shouting after, Jack's blow disarmed Lauren entirely. His greatsword flew from his hands, his palms torn, and his arms went numb. He could no longer feel pain—only despair.
Lauren closed his eyes, accepting his fate.
Jack raised his club high.
In the distance, Buck watched with a mixture of frustration and despair. After a quick glance around and realizing the harbor was overrun, he gritted his teeth and bolted toward the town.
...
The death blow Lauren expected didn't come. Confused, he opened his eyes. Jack's hands were empty. Turning to look, Lauren saw Jack sprinting forward. Despite his bulk, Jack's explosive power outpaced even the club he had hurled at Buck.
Sensing danger, Buck hesitated—and that hesitation sealed his fate.
"What the—?"
THWACK!
"Why... why won't you let me go?"
CRACK!
Those were Buck's last words. Dodging the flying club had bought him a moment, but Jack was already upon him. One powerful hand closed around Buck's neck, snapping it effortlessly.
BOOM!
The spiked club crashed into a distant tree, splintering it with a deafening crack.
Jack looked at Buck's lifeless, wide-eyed face and smirked.
"Let you go? What, you think I'm a streamer or something?" Jack quipped mockingly. "Too late now. Maybe next time."
Lauren, battered and unable to lift his sword, watched Jack approach with a mix of fear and resignation. Everyone else was either dead or incapacitated. Only a handful of Beast Pirates remained standing.
Closing his eyes again, Lauren braced for the inevitable.
"Why don't you run?" Jack asked, towering over him. "No answer? Still acting tough, huh?"
Jack clicked his tongue. "You brought this on yourself, old man. Why make such a mess?"
Leaning closer, he added, "Tell me what's happening. Why haven't the Kingdoms of Wetna, Aer, and Cusa paid for the weapons they owe us? Who's backing them? Some hero?"
Lauren remained silent, clearly not understanding Jack's references.
Jack sighed impatiently. "Look, my patience has limits. If you don't talk, I'll end this quickly and find someone else to interrogate."
He pressed the spiked end of his club against Lauren's head, his tone dripping with menace.
"Three seconds, old man. Three."
"Let go of my father!"
Jack turned, raising an eyebrow. Lauren's eyes shot open, panic flashing across his face.
From the pile of corpses, a young man stood shakily.
"Kaigan! Run!" Lauren roared, his voice breaking.
"Kaigan? Nice name," Jack mused. "Lucky you, old man—your kid's got guts."
"Run, Kaigan! Damn it, RUN! Don't make me die with regrets!"
But Kaigan stumbled after only a few steps, his injured leg giving out. Lauren's despair turned to rage.
"Jack! He's just a kid! Leave him alone!"
"A kid?"
Jack chuckled, stroking his chin as he glanced at Kaigan's stubbly face, then at his own clean-shaven one.
"Well, what do you know? Me too! I'm only thirteen—guess I'm younger than your boy." Jack's grin widened cruelly.
"Let's see if I can get to know Kaigan a bit better."
