Chapter 40: Chapter 40: The Attack on Mary Geoise
When Rim received Holdem's message, he froze for a moment, then quickly regained his composure.
He looked at the trembling group of elderly, women, and children gathered in the center of the square and spoke softly:
"Kill them all. Leave no one alive."
Bang! Bang! Bang!
At Rim's command, the pirates mercilessly pulled the triggers of their pistols. A storm of gunfire echoed through the air, and rivers of blood began to seep from the heap of corpses, pooling around Rim's boots.
The pirates moved with practiced efficiency, throwing clothes, tree branches, and planks ripped from doors onto the bodies. As flames roared to life, a foul stench rose into the air. Only a few masked pirates stayed behind to tend the fire, while the rest returned to the port.
Rim glanced back at the raging inferno and muttered to himself,
"It seems our Captain Jack, though still young, has truly been forged by Kaido's tutelage. His heart is as hard as iron."
Cough, cough, cough.
The Hundred Beasts Pirates were known for their straightforward philosophy: "Kill all who resist. Enslave the rest." As for the elderly, weak, and infirm, death was almost always their fate.
Kaido valued strength above all else, and his core members like, King and Queen, were no saints. Under their brutal tutelage—and with Jack's naturally violent and bloodthirsty tendencies—it was no surprise he turned out this way. Even with the memories of another life, Jack had no regard for human lives.
Jack had long since understood one harsh truth:
Life, no matter the world, is the cheapest currency—especially in a world steeped in war and violence.
Jack had no intention of letting a group of vengeful warriors come after him twenty years down the line, shouting for blood. And if it wasn't warriors but some femme fatale trying to assassinate him? That would be even worse.
He chuckled darkly at the thought. As a pirate, he was already labeled as evil. If he harbored a bleeding heart in such a ruthless world, he might as well jump into the sea and end it all now.
"My compassion and mercy," Jack thought, "are reserved for my crew, my friends, and those who pose no threat to me. As for enemies... the best solution is to eradicate them completely."
Rim led the pirates back to the port. Surveying the field littered with corpses, he quickly ordered his subordinates to continue cleaning up the scene.
A group of pirates had finished inventorying the loot from the Roast Chicken. Rim gazed at the barren, scorched land—evidence of Jack's wrath—with a look of awe in his eyes.
"Jack-sama, it seems your strength has grown even more."
Jack, however, didn't share Rim's enthusiasm. His expression was sour. Despite defeating Lauren, a foe stronger than Pub, the spoils he received from docking his ship amounted to a measly five points of Willpower.
"Maybe I've been milking Onigashima too much, and the system's had enough," Jack thought.
Through countless experiments, Jack had learned the system only rewarded significant gains for defeating enemies who weren't too far below his strength. Fighting weaklings earned him nothing.
Five attribute points was a decent reward. But Willpower? Jack couldn't help but feel annoyed. Willpower grew naturally with age and increased pain tolerance. Attributes like Agility, on the other hand, could be improved through rigorous training or docking. But Perception… that was painfully slow to develop. Most of his Perception gains in recent years were thanks to Black Maria.
Two consecutive lackluster rewards left Jack feeling frustrated.
"Jack-sama!"
Cough, cough, cough.
Rim hesitated, noticing Jack deep in thought, and nervously asked, "Are you okay? Are you hurt? Cough... cough..."
Jack shook his head, snapping out of his thoughts. He looked at Rim's worried expression and took a step back.
"...I'm fine, Rim. Is the town cleaned up?"
Rim took a cautious step forward, only for Jack to retreat even further.
"Captain Jack!" Rim's face darkened. "It's a hereditary disease, not contagious! There's no need to act like this!"
"I'm not worried! I just don't like men getting so close to me!" Jack barked, stepping further away.
"Hey! Rim, back off! You hear me?!"
Their bickering was interrupted by a pirate rushing over with a newspaper in hand.
"Jack-sama! Jack-sama! Big news!"
"Hmm?" Jack took the newspaper, and Rim peered over his shoulder curiously.
"Attack on Mary Geoise!"
"Fishman adventurer Fisher Tiger scales the Red Line by hand and liberates over a thousand slaves from Mary Geoise!"
"This…" Jack muttered, his brow furrowing. "Who's subordinate is this? So bold."
Jack skimmed through the article, his mind racing. He knew enough about Mary Geoise to grasp the weight of this event. The Holy Land, home to the so-called Celestial Dragons—the self-proclaimed gods of the world—was no ordinary place. Its defenses were unmatched, bolstered by the World Government's headquarters.
For a fishman to wreak havoc there? It defied logic.
The newspaper featured Fisher Tiger's broad smile and labeled him the Fishman Adventurer. Jack couldn't help but wonder.
Fishmen were naturally stronger than most humans, but exceptional individuals existed among humans too—monsters who rivaled or surpassed fishmen in raw strength. Pub and Lauren, whom Jack had recently fought, were prime examples.
If such individuals could exist among pirates, how many hidden masters must the World Government have?
And yet, Fisher Tiger had scaled the Red Line—on land, where fishmen's aquatic advantages were useless—and managed to liberate a thousand slaves from the heart of Mary Geoise.
"Is Fisher Tiger truly that strong?" Jack mused. "Or does he have a cheat ability like me?"
But unlike Jack, Fisher Tiger seemed driven by noble ideals.
"Liberating slaves, huh? Not my thing," Jack thought with a scoff. "Slavery exists in every world, just under different names. People are always divided into classes. I'm just a common man, trying to claw my way to the top."
Jack smirked. "Fisher Tiger… let's see how long you last against the World Government's wrath."
