If it weren't for Doflamingo's mistake of allowing Caesar to fall into Byakuya's hands, Kaido wouldn't have needed to bring his subordinates to set a trap to eliminate him.
Yet, not only had Byakuya survived, but Kaido's side also suffered heavy losses.
Doflamingo had even promised over the Den Den Mushi to meet on Ward Island to deal with Byakuya, but when Byakuya arrived, Doflamingo and the Donquixote Family were nowhere to be seen.
This deepened Kaido's resentment toward Doflamingo.
Once this matter was settled, Kaido vowed to visit Dressrosa and ensure Doflamingo understood the cost of deceiving a strongman.
Byakuya was also firmly on Kaido's revenge list.
However, if Kaido knew that the very man occupying his thoughts, along with the entire Donquixote Family, was currently buried underground and in a far worse predicament than himself, perhaps he'd feel slightly better.
After all, while Kaido had lost two high-ranking officers, the Donquixote Family was facing complete annihilation.
Despite his fury, Kaido was not yet so blinded by rage that he'd lost all reason.
The challenge of facing a powerhouse like Byakuya had already planted the thought of retreat in his mind.
Now, with the former Marine Admiral Zephyr joining the fray, Kaido became even more convinced that a tactical retreat was the best option.
But before leaving, Kaido resolved to attempt to rescue Queen and Page One.
His eyes burned with savage intent as he ascended rapidly into the sky, flames coiling around his dragon claws.
A deafening roar escaped his maw, filling the air with an oppressive storm of thunderclouds.
Hundreds of dark purple bolts of lightning rained down on Byakuya and the others.
Standing together, Byakuya and Zephyr shielded Ain and Tashigi, dispersing the lightning strikes with ease.
Though the attack looked terrifying, against Byakuya and Zephyr, it was little more than a warm-up act.
Kaido, of course, had no illusions about relying solely on lightning to defeat his opponents.
With a twist of his massive body, Kaido's dragon head aligned with Byakuya and Zephyr.
Opening his mouth wide, he unleashed a fiery Bolo Breath, its heat and destructive force palpable even from miles away.
Byakuya stepped forward and swung his sword, splitting the blazing attack in two and sending the halves back toward Kaido.
In response, Kaido widened the range of his breath, nullifying Byakuya's counterattack.
As the flames surged toward the group once more, Kaido shifted his attack.
His fiery breath transformed into a powerful Wind Blade, with countless razor-sharp slashes infused within the flames, all aimed at Zephyr.
The combined force of fire and wind caused the attack's power to skyrocket.
Byakuya couldn't help but quip, "Fusion techniques? What is this, some kind of ninja training Kaido got from Naruto?"
The overwhelming storm of fiery wind and cutting blades bore down on Zephyr, who felt an immediate sense of danger.
Even with his strength, such an attack could result in severe injury or even death if he didn't evade it.
Without hesitation, Zephyr dropped the unconscious Queen and Page One and pulled the panicked Ain and Tashigi to safety.
However, the speed of Kaido's combined attack was so great that escape seemed impossible. Seeing this, Byakuya sighed in exasperation.
He abandoned his assault on Kaido, knowing the dragon had calculated this precisely—forcing Byakuya to protect the others instead of continuing his offensive.
Byakuya positioned himself in front of Zephyr and the others, unleashing a surge of Armament Haki.
The dark red aura formed a circular barrier, shielding them from the storm of wind blades and flames.
While the shield was held, Byakuya could feel his Haki depleting rapidly.
Kaido's attack was undeniably powerful, capable of gravely injuring even weaker Admiral-level opponents.
Byakuya's Armament Haki wasn't fully mastered, currently at level eight—a notch below the level of a Yonko's.
Moreover, relying purely on defensive Haki in this situation put Byakuya at a disadvantage.
This wasn't surprising, as Byakuya's usual enemies were typically defeated in a single strike.
To him, Armament Haki was a useful tool but not essential to his combat style.
However, Byakuya thought to himself that it might be time to improve both his Armament Haki and Observation Haki to avoid unnecessary exposure of his true strength in future battles.
Though his Haki had limits, Byakuya's stamina was second to none.
Combined with his passive "infinite recovery" ability, he could endure Kaido's assault for days if necessary.
Still, Kaido had no intention of dragging this out.
The massive dragon swirled in the sky, sweeping his tail down to scoop up Jack and the other injured crewmembers while grabbing the unconscious Queen and Page One in his claws.
The storm of fire and wind abruptly ceased, and Kaido took off at full speed, not giving Byakuya any opportunity to pursue.
Kaido's retreat was swift, and with Zephyr, Ain, and Tashigi present, Byakuya couldn't chase after him alone.
He sighed, deciding to save the matter of cutting off Kaido's horns for another day.
Although Ain and Tashigi had emerged unharmed from the Beast Pirates' attack, Byakuya still felt uneasy.
Kaido had brought his entire crew, yet one of the Calamities, King, was conspicuously absent.
Additionally, as Byakuya arrived at Ward Island, he saw a shadow heading toward G-5.
To prevent any potential danger, Byakuya quickly explained the situation to Zephyr before rushing back to the G-5 Marine Base at full speed.
At the G-5 Base, a merchant ship had docked at the harbor. A blind, middle-aged man in a purple robe stepped off the ship.
The boatman called out, "We've arrived at the G-5 Base. Do you want me to take you to the front gate?"
"Thank you for your kindness," the man replied, "but I can manage on my own."
"All right then, but be careful not to trip," the boatman advised.
As they spoke, a patrolling Marine soldier noticed them and approached. "What's your business at the G-5 Base?"
The boatman quickly responded, "This gentleman is here to meet someone. I just brought him here."
The Marine glanced at the blind man, noting the scars across his closed eyelids.
Though the G-5 Marines were known for their unruly behavior, they weren't heartless.
On the contrary, they treated civilians and weaker groups with surprising kindness.
"Sir," the Marine asked respectfully, "who are you here to see?"
The man smiled gently. "I'm here to meet your base commander, Byakuya."
"Base Commander Byakuya?" The Marines froze for a moment, unsure of the relationship between their commander and this mysterious visitor.
They didn't dare act rashly. "The Base Commander is currently out and hasn't returned yet."
"How about this: you can wait for him in the lounge, and once Byakuya returns, I'll ask for his instructions," one of the soldiers suggested.
The middle-aged man seemed easygoing and nodded. "Sure, I'll wait for him in the lounge."
After bidding farewell to the boatman, the three made their way toward the base.
Along the way, the middle-aged man couldn't stop asking about Byakuya.
"What kind of person do you think Vice Admiral Byakuya is?"
Perhaps because they rarely had the chance to talk about their commander with outsiders, the two soldiers became quite chatty.
"Vice Admiral Byakuya? I think he's quite an interesting person," one soldier said.
"Oh? How so?" The man's curiosity was piqued.
"Well, Vice Admiral Byakuya is incredibly strong, but his attitude is very easygoing," one soldier replied.
"Yeah, and he respects us soldiers. He never forces us to do things we don't want to do," the other added.
"Anything else?" The middle-aged man began forming a picture of Byakuya's character in his mind.
"We all think Vice Admiral Byakuya is not only brave but also very resourceful," one soldier said with admiration.
"For example, there was a time when our base went an entire month without supplies."
"The base had no money, and with over 3,000 mouths to feed, we were on the brink of disaster. But Vice Admiral Byakuya solved the problem in no time."
"Oh? How did he manage that?" the middle-aged man asked, intrigued.
The soldier, clearly proud, replied, "Vice Admiral Byakuya led all of us out to sea and started collecting tolls from passing ships."
"In no time, we gathered several billion Berries! Now, we don't even need the monthly supplies sent by the Marines."
"Just from these tolls, we can live comfortably for years."
The middle-aged man paused, a hint of doubt appearing on his face. Tolls? Are marines collecting tolls?
Did the boatman drop me off at the wrong place? Is this not a Marine base but a pirate den?
However, after hearing the soldiers' explanation, the man finally understood. It turned out they collected tolls specifically from pirates, even managing to extract payments from the Big Mom Pirates, one of the Yonko crews.
Byakuya was truly bold and fearless!
